A power button that does not work may be blocked by a case, dirty around the edges, affected by a software freeze, or physically damaged. First remove the case, clean around the button with a soft dry cloth, and connect the device to a known-good charger. If the screen still works, enable an onscreen power control and back up your data before the device shuts down.
Identify what is actually failing
| Symptom | Best first check |

| The button feels stuck, loose, mushy, or has no click | Remove the case and inspect or clean around the button. Continued problems usually indicate hardware trouble. |
| The button works sometimes | Check case pressure, debris, liquid exposure, impact damage, or a worn switch. |
| The screen is on but the button will not lock it | Use an onscreen control and check button-behavior settings. |
| The phone is frozen | Use the device-specific forced-restart procedure. |
| The screen is black with no obvious response | Test the charger, cable, outlet, battery, and display before blaming the button. |
| A long press opens an assistant instead of power controls | Check the Power button, Side button, or Press and hold setting. |
| The device starts only when connected to power | Suspect the battery, charging system, or power management as well as the button. |
Safe checks for any phone
- Remove the case, bumper, screen-protector edge, or film near the button.
- Check whether the button is recessed, physically obstructed, or visibly damaged.
- Clean around it with a soft, dry cloth.
- Do not pour liquid into the gap, spray cleaner directly onto the device, or pry out debris with a pin or other metal object.
- If the phone was dropped, bent, exposed to liquid, unusually hot, or has a separating chassis or swollen battery, stop troubleshooting and arrange service.
Apple specifically recommends removing protective material and cleaning around a malfunctioning button with a soft cloth. See Apple’s button-support guidance.
If the phone is usable, back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, and other important files now. A workaround is useful only while the device remains powered on.

Apple’s AssistiveTouch feature can replace several physical-button functions, including locking the screen and restarting the device.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then Touch.
- Tap AssistiveTouch and turn it on.
- Tap the floating onscreen button and choose Device > Lock Screen.
- To restart, choose Device > More > Restart.
AssistiveTouch can also provide volume controls, screenshots, and other actions. Apple documents these options in its AssistiveTouch guide.
Do not assume one forced-restart sequence applies to every iPhone. The steps vary by model and may still require a working Side or volume button. If the button remains damaged or intermittent after removing obstructions and cleaning, arrange Apple or authorized repair.
If an Android phone is still on
Android menus differ by manufacturer, model, and Android version. Look under Settings > Accessibility for Accessibility Menu, Accessibility button, or a similarly named shortcut. Enable the floating button or accessibility shortcut, then check whether it offers Power, Lock screen, or related controls.
Google notes that Android settings and available controls vary between devices. Its Accessibility Menu documentation and Android troubleshooting guide are useful starting points, but your manufacturer’s instructions take priority.

Samsung Galaxy
On many current Galaxy devices, swipe down twice to open Quick Settings and tap the Power icon. From there, select Restart or Power off.
For a frozen supported Galaxy device, hold Volume Down + Power/Side button for about 7–10 seconds. “Power” may be labelled “Side” on your model. Samsung’s official troubleshooting instructions should be used if this combination does not work.
Google Pixel
If the button works mechanically but a long press opens Google Assistant, search Settings for Power button, Press and hold, or a similar option. Google documents a power-button behavior setting, particularly for Pixel 6 and later, in its Pixel power-button guide.
If the phone is frozen
A forced restart is intended to recover an unresponsive device. It is different from a factory reset and should not normally be used to erase data. Never choose a recovery-menu wipe or factory reset as the first response to a failed button.

For general Android guidance, Google recommends holding the power button for about 30 seconds when a phone is frozen with the screen on. If the phone is off, the initial power-on attempt is to hold the power button for about 5–7 seconds. These timings are not universal; some manufacturers require a different combination. See Google’s power-on instructions and frozen-device instructions.
If the physical button is broken and an iPhone is frozen, there may be no safe universal button combination that avoids the damaged control. Service may be the practical next step.
If the phone is off or the screen is black
- Connect a known-good compatible charger and cable.
- Try another wall outlet and, if available, another compatible adapter.
- Check the charging port for visible lint or debris. Do not insert metal objects.
- Leave the phone connected for several minutes and look for a battery icon, vibration, sound, charging light, or warmth.
- Call the phone from another device. If it rings or vibrates but the display remains black, the screen may be the problem.
- Try the manufacturer’s approved power-on or forced-restart procedure.
- If there is still no response, arrange manufacturer or authorized repair.
Google recommends checking the charger, cable, outlet, charging port, and battery indicators. In some cases it also recommends connecting the phone to a computer for 10–15 minutes before trying again. Pixel users can use Google’s no-power and blank-screen guidance; calling the phone or using Find Hub can help distinguish a dead device from a failed display.

Mac and Surface laptop steps
Mac
- Check the power cable, adapter, and outlet.
- Disconnect USB devices, hubs, external drives, monitors, and other accessories.
- Hold the power button—or Touch ID on a Mac laptop with Touch ID—for about 10 seconds.
- Release it, wait briefly, and press it normally.
Apple’s Mac startup guide contains model-specific advice. SMC-reset instructions apply only to Intel-based Macs; Apple-silicon Macs do not use the same procedure.
Microsoft Surface
- Disconnect accessories and docks.
- Connect the intended charger and charge for at least 15 minutes.
- Try Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to wake the display.
- Hold the power button for about 20 seconds, then release it when the logo appears.
Follow Microsoft’s Surface startup instructions and forced-restart guidance.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek service instead of continuing DIY attempts if the device has liquid damage, impact damage, bending, excessive heat, smoke, a chemical smell, exposed components, or a swollen battery. Do not charge or keep using a device with a swollen battery.

Repair or replacement?
Manufacturer or authorized service is the safer choice when the device is under warranty, sealed construction and water-resistance seals matter, or biometric components may be involved. An independent repair shop may be cheaper or faster, but parts quality, warranty coverage, data handling, and post-repair water resistance vary. No repair should be assumed to preserve water resistance unless the provider explicitly guarantees it.
Replacement may make more sense when the device is old, has a degraded battery or additional damage, security updates are ending, or repair approaches the cost of a suitable replacement. Use the manufacturer’s model-specific repair flow rather than relying on a generic “power-button repair” app or kit.
Prevent the problem from becoming a lockout
Once the device is working, keep the onscreen accessibility control enabled, set a reasonable automatic screen-lock period, back up your data, and arrange repair before the battery runs out. Accessibility shortcuts can restore control while the device is on, but they cannot reliably start a completely powered-off phone when the only boot control is a failed physical button.
