For most new Linux setups, DOSBox Staging is the best place to start: it is a modern continuation of DOSBox, and its official Linux page lists version 0.82.2 as the current stable release as of September 23, 2026. Install it from the official x86_64 archive, use a Flatpak, or install your distribution’s dosbox package. Then mount a Linux folder inside DOSBox as a virtual drive, change to that drive, and run the game’s actual DOS executable.
DOSBox emulates an x86 PC and DOS environment; it does not install MS-DOS or automatically find files on your Linux system. The key is mounting only the folder that contains software you have the right to use.
Before you begin
Use a Linux desktop with working graphics and audio, and have a legally obtained DOS game or program ready. Copyright rules vary by software and jurisdiction; a title being old or described as “abandonware” does not by itself make it free to download.

Create a dedicated folder in your home directory. For example:

mkdir -p "$HOME/DOSGames/DOOM"Copy or extract the game files into the appropriate folder. For your first setup, keep directory names simple and avoid spaces. Do not put game files in /usr or /opt; those are system locations and can introduce unnecessary permission problems.
Choose a DOSBox version

Original DOSBox, Staging, and DOSBox-X are separate variants; “DOSBox” does not mean one identical release or configuration. For a general setup, start with Staging and try another variant only if a particular program needs it.
Install DOSBox Staging
Option 1: Use the official Linux archive
The project recommends its official Linux build over repackaged or self-compiled builds, especially for beginners. The archive is a portable, per-user option, not a system-wide installation.
- Open the official Linux release page and download the current stable Linux x86_64 archive.
- In a terminal, go to the directory where it downloaded, usually
~/Downloads, and extract it. The archive’s exact filename and extracted folder can change, so check the names shown on your system.
cd "$HOME/Downloads"
tar -xf dosbox-staging-*.tar.*Find the executable in the extracted directory:
cd dosbox-staging-*
find . -maxdepth 2 -type f -executable -printRun the executable name included in the archive. If it is named dosbox-staging, for example:
./dosbox-stagingIf you want to keep the extracted program in a per-user applications folder, you can move it there. Adjust the source path if you are not in Downloads:
mkdir -p "$HOME/Applications"
mv "$HOME/Downloads"/dosbox-staging-* "$HOME/Applications/"This simply stores the program in your home directory; it does not install it for every user. The project’s Linux page also describes an included install-icons.sh script for users who want application icons.
Option 2: Install Staging with Flatpak
If Flatpak and the Flathub remote are available on your system, install and launch the official Flathub app using its application ID:
flatpak install flathub io.github.dosbox-staging
flatpak run io.github.dosbox-stagingFlatpak apps are sandboxed, so Staging may not be able to see your game folder until you grant access. After creating ~/DOSGames, allow access only to that folder:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem="$HOME/DOSGames"
io.github.dosbox-stagingClose and reopen the emulator after changing the permission. The Flathub listing identifies the app and its application ID.

Install your distribution’s DOSBox package
A repository package is convenient and integrates with your Linux distribution, but the package named dosbox is not necessarily DOSBox Staging. Package availability and version vary by distribution and release.
Debian, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint
sudo apt update
sudo apt install dosboxFedora-based distributions
sudo dnf install dosboxAvailability depends on your Fedora release and enabled repositories.

Arch Linux
sudo pacman -S dosboxArch’s DOSBox documentation also lists Staging and DOSBox-X alternatives; availability and packaging routes differ.
Check which command is installed and, where supported, its version:
command -v dosbox
command -v dosbox-staging
dosbox --version
dosbox-staging --versionNot every command will exist on every setup. A manually extracted archive or Flatpak may be launched differently; use the command or application ID for the option you installed.
Mount a Linux folder as a DOS drive
DOSBox does not automatically browse your Linux filesystem. You must explicitly map a Linux directory to a virtual DOS drive. If your game is in /home/alex/DOSGames, enter these commands at the DOSBox prompt:
mount c /home/alex/DOSGames
c:
dirReplace /home/alex with the real path to your home directory. The Linux path is used in mount; after the mount, navigate with DOS drive letters and commands. The C: you see inside the emulator is virtual—it is not your Linux root directory or a Windows disk. The original DOSBox manual documents mounting a Linux directory this way.
You can also start DOSBox from a terminal and queue the mount and drive-change commands. For the distribution command:
dosbox -c "mount c $HOME/DOSGames" -c "c:"For a Staging executable available on your PATH:
dosbox-staging
-c "mount c $HOME/DOSGames"
-c "c:"If you downloaded the portable archive, run its executable by the path you found, such as ./dosbox-staging, with the same -c options. These shell examples use $HOME to expand your home path; if a directory name contains spaces, quote and test the full mount command carefully.

Find and launch the right program
Suppose the game’s files are in ~/DOSGames/DOOM, while the parent ~/DOSGames is mounted as C:. At the DOSBox prompt, inspect the contents and then enter the game folder:

dirLook at the filenames and run the program’s actual launcher. If the listing contains DOOM.EXE, enter:
doom.exeSome titles start from a .COM file, a .BAT file, or a differently named executable. Do not assume every game starts with game.exe; check the files, read any included instructions, or look for a setup program.
For a game already installed in its own folder, you can mount that folder directly and start its executable. This example works only if doom.exe is actually in the mounted directory:
dosbox
-c "mount c $HOME/DOSGames/DOOM"
-c "c:"
-c "doom.exe"Substitute dosbox-staging or the path to the archive’s executable if that is what you installed. Some DOSBox variants also accept a directory as a startup argument, for example dosbox "$HOME/DOSGames/DOOM", but the explicit mount commands make it clear what is being mapped and are easier to troubleshoot. Install a game from an installer
If you have an installer directory rather than an already-installed game, mount the directory containing the installer as another DOS drive. For example, if the installer files are in ~/Downloads/DOOM_INSTALL:
mount c /home/alex/DOSGames
c:
mkdir DOOM
mount d /home/alex/Downloads/DOOM_INSTALL
d:
dirRun the installer that is actually present—perhaps install.exe, setup.exe, or a batch file. Follow its prompts and, when asked for a destination, choose a path on the mounted DOS drive, such as C:DOOM. The installer’s name and steps depend on the game.
A CD-based installer or a disk image is different from an ordinary folder. An ISO, floppy image, and hard-disk image are not interchangeable with a directory mount; the appropriate image-mount command and options depend on the image type and DOSBox variant. Some games also rely on CD audio or copy-protection behavior that may not be reproduced by a simple folder mount. Consult the documentation for your emulator and image format rather than treating every image as a folder.
Make mounting automatic
If you use the same DOSBox setup often, you can put mount commands in the configuration file’s [autoexec] section. A global mount for the games directory might look like this:

c:For a single game, mount its folder instead and optionally start its program:

doom.exeReplace the example home path and executable with your own. Per-game configurations are usually better than changing global settings: a speed, sound, or drive setting that helps one title can cause trouble for another.
Find the configuration file
For a native DOSBox Staging installation, ask the program for its active configuration path:
dosbox-staging --printconfThe project documents this option and the native Linux configuration location, commonly ~/.config/dosbox/dosbox-staging.conf. The active path can vary with packaging, so use the program’s output rather than assuming that every build uses the same file. See the Staging getting-started guide.
Original DOSBox creates a configuration under ~/.dosbox/ on first run, but the filename depends on the version. Locate it rather than guessing:
find "$HOME/.dosbox" -maxdepth 1 -type f -printFlatpak uses an application sandbox and may keep configuration under an application-specific location such as ~/.var/app/io.github.dosbox-staging/config/dosbox/. That path is not universal; use the installed variant’s configuration-printing option if available, or inspect the app-specific directory. If edits seem to have no effect, verify that you changed the active file and restart the emulator.
Fix common problems
The game runs too fast
Start with the emulator’s default settings before changing CPU speed. If the game still runs too quickly, reduce emulated cycles with Ctrl+F11, or try this command at the DOSBox prompt:
cycles 30003000 is an example, not a universal answer. The right value depends on the game and DOSBox variant. In original DOSBox, the configuration setting is written as cycles=3000; do not assume that original DOSBox options or names map directly to Staging or DOSBox-X. The original configuration guide explains cycle modes and cautions that excessive cycles can make games too fast or unstable and can cause audio stutter.

Try increasing cycles with Ctrl+F12, but stop if the game becomes unstable or sound starts stuttering. If it remains slow, test without sound, reduce or disable expensive scaling, and check whether the game is using a high-resolution or protected-mode setup. More cycles do not guarantee better performance.

There is no sound
If the game has a setup utility, run it and choose a sound device supported by your emulator. Older games commonly offer Sound Blaster-compatible choices, but the correct IRQ, DMA, and address are game-specific; do not assume one set of values will work for every title. To isolate the problem, test with sound disabled in the DOSBox configuration. The DOSBox manual recommends disabling sound as a troubleshooting test.
DOSBox cannot find the game or its files
At the DOSBox prompt, check the mounted drives and directory contents:
mount
c:
dir
cd GAME
dirConfirm that you mounted the correct Linux folder, that the game is not one directory deeper than expected, and that you are using the DOS-visible filename shown by dir. If you use Flatpak, check its filesystem permission. If the program expects a CD or disk image, mounting its files as an ordinary folder may not be enough. Also make sure your Linux account can read the files.

Grant access to only the games directory, then restart the app. For Staging:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem="$HOME/DOSGames"
io.github.dosbox-stagingFor DOSBox-X:
flatpak override --user
--filesystem="$HOME/DOSGames"
com.dosbox_x.DOSBox-XThis is preferable to granting broad access to your entire home directory. DOSBox-X’s installation instructions also warn that Flatpak sandboxing can limit access to host files.
Configuration changes do nothing
Check that you edited the active configuration for the variant you are running, not another DOSBox fork’s file. Flatpak and native installations can use different configuration locations; a per-game configuration can also override global settings. Confirm the filename, check whether the setting is supported by that variant, save the file, and restart the emulator. For Staging, use dosbox-staging --printconf to identify its configuration path.

Shortcuts can differ by variant or configuration, so consult the documentation for your installed build if one does not work. The original DOSBox setup guide describes common fullscreen and performance controls.
When to try another emulator
If a program does not work in Staging, try the original DOSBox when a launcher or old guide specifically expects it, or when you need to compare behavior with a legacy setup. Consider DOSBox-X if the software needs unusual video, sound, memory, or peripheral settings and you want more control. Its official Flatpak installation commands are:
flatpak install flathub com.dosbox_x.DOSBox-X
flatpak run com.dosbox_x.DOSBox-XGrant it access to your game folder with the DOSBox-X application ID as shown in the troubleshooting section. DOSBox-X’s broader controls can help with edge cases, but add complexity. None of these emulators guarantees compatibility with every DOS title.
DOSBox is for DOS-era software, not ordinary modern Windows programs. A Windows installer may need a different compatibility tool unless it includes a DOSBox setup. A frontend can manage shortcuts and per-game settings for a large library, but for one or two games, direct commands are simpler and make the mount-and-launch process easier to understand.
