If your Fujitsu ESPRIMO Q920 shut down and now shows no LED, fan movement, sound, USB activity, or response to the power button, treat it first as a power-delivery failure—not a Windows, storage, or display problem. The original Hardware Hangout thread did not confirm a repair, and the Q920’s documented 65 W integrated power supply means buying a generic laptop charger may be the wrong solution.
First determine whether it is dead or merely not booting
“Doesn’t boot” can describe several different faults. The symptoms determine where to look:

The reported Q920 belongs to the first category based on the available description. That makes commands such as sfc, DISM, boot-repair tools, and drive diagnostics irrelevant until the computer reaches POST.

- Disconnect the Q920 from mains power.
- Remove USB devices, network cables, external drives, and other peripherals. Leave only the computer’s correct power connection and, if necessary, the display connected.
- Plug it directly into a known-good wall outlet, bypassing a power strip, surge protector, or UPS.
- Inspect the mains lead, plug, and rear power inlet for looseness, heat damage, discoloration, or signs of arcing. Try a known-good cable with the correct connector.
- With the computer still unplugged, hold the power button for about 15–30 seconds. Reconnect power and try once.
- Observe closely for any LED flash, fan twitch, click, USB power, or other change.
These checks reduce the chance of an upstream mains problem but cannot prove that the Q920’s internal supply or motherboard is healthy. The original owner had already tried another outlet and power cable, so a deeper power-path diagnosis is appropriate if the machine remains completely silent.

If you smell burning, see scorch marks, or notice unusual heat around the power inlet, stop powering the computer. Repeated attempts can worsen a damaged supply or short circuit.
Confirm which Q920 power arrangement you have
Do not assume every Q-series computer uses the same power design. Fujitsu’s ESPRIMO Q920 data sheet specifies a 65 W power supply integrated into the system. A third-party repair report also distinguishes later Q910/Q920/Q930 designs with an onboard supply from older related systems that use an external 19–20 V brick.
Check the model label and photograph the rear panel before ordering parts. Fujitsu documentation covers Q920 variants, including Q920/MRE documentation, separately in its support database. The Q5xx/Q9xx user-manual listing identifies the relevant family manual as version 2, dated July 17, 2013.
A laptop charger with a similar-looking plug is not automatically compatible. Voltage, polarity, connector dimensions, current capacity, and the machine’s internal power architecture must all match. Do not connect a generic adapter merely because it is marked 19 V or 20 V.
What the integrated supply tells us
Fujitsu documents a 65 W integrated supply and a 100–240 V rated input range, with a 90–264 V operating range and 50–60 Hz rated frequency. These figures describe the system’s documented input characteristics; they are not permission to repair the mains side yourself.

A technician needs to separate several questions:
- Is AC mains reaching the computer?
- Is the internal supply producing its low-voltage output?
- Is standby voltage present?
- Does the power button send the expected signal?
- Do the motherboard’s regulators start without detecting a short?
A voltage measurement at one test point does not prove that the entire power system works. One forum participant reported measuring approximately 220 V input and about 20 V at test points on a related machine, but that was an anecdotal user measurement, not a Fujitsu service specification.
Should you replace the CMOS battery?
A depleted CR2032-style CMOS battery can reset the clock and BIOS settings. In some computers it can contribute to startup or configuration problems, so replacing it is inexpensive if the battery is old.

However, it is not the leading explanation for a Q920 with no visible standby activity, no fan movement, no light, and no response at all. The original thread contains conflicting opinions on this issue, and it never established that the CMOS battery caused the failure. Treat battery replacement as a secondary check—not a substitute for diagnosing the power path.
After replacing the battery, BIOS defaults may need to be restored, including boot mode, storage settings, or customized power-management options.
If the Q920 shows any sign of power
Once LEDs or fans operate, move to POST and display troubleshooting:

- Remove nonessential USB devices.
- Confirm the monitor is set to the correct input and test the video cable or adapter.
- Reseat memory only with the computer disconnected from power. If two modules are installed, test one at a time.
- Listen for diagnostic beeps or observe diagnostic LEDs, if fitted.
- Disconnect the storage drive temporarily to see whether the system reaches BIOS or displays a boot-device message.
- Use the BIOS key specified by the Q920 documentation rather than relying on generic PC advice.
A fan that spins briefly and stops can indicate a shorted peripheral or drive, a failed regulator, a memory or POST problem, thermal protection, or damaged power circuitry. Disconnecting drives and peripherals can help isolate the fault, but stop immediately if there is a burning smell or visible damage.
Opening the case: inspection and safety
Only open the Q920 if you are comfortable working inside electronic equipment. Unplug it first, wait before opening it, and consult the Fujitsu manual’s enclosure and service-access instructions.
Before disconnecting anything, photograph the original cable routing and connectors. Look for:
- Burnt components or discolored PCB areas.
- Bulging or leaking capacitors.
- Cracked solder joints.
- Damaged power connectors.
- A disconnected power-button board or cable.
- A shorted or visibly damaged drive or peripheral.
Do not touch the primary side of the internal supply. Dangerous voltage can remain present even after unplugging. A multimeter should be used only by someone trained to measure safely and able to distinguish the AC primary side from the low-voltage side.
Advanced salvage: converting to external 20 V input
A third-party repair report describes salvaging some Q910/Q920/Q930 systems by bypassing a failed onboard supply and wiring an external DC jack to 20 V test pads. The procedure involves extensive disassembly, removing a power-supply component, soldering to the motherboard, and managing polarity correctly. The report recommends at least a 20 V, 4 A supply—80 W—as a safety margin.

This is not an official Fujitsu repair procedure, nor is 20 V/4 A a universal factory requirement for every Q920 revision. It is an advanced electronics modification with risks of shock, reversed polarity, board damage, fire, and further component failure. It should be considered only by an experienced electronics technician after confirming the exact board revision and fault.

Ask a repair shop for power-rail and motherboard diagnosis, not merely a Windows reinstallation. A useful service request is: “Please test the Q920’s AC input, standby rail, onboard power-supply section, power-button circuit, and motherboard for shorts.”
Repair may make sense if the machine runs a specialized legacy application, contains valuable compatible parts, or the data is important. Compare the diagnostic and labor cost with a compatible motherboard, donor Q920, or replacement mini-PC. Also account for the value of the RAM, drive, license, and data—not just the chassis.
If the board is badly charred, parts are unavailable, or labor approaches the value of the older Haswell-era system, a donor machine or replacement is usually the more predictable option. Preserve the drive and RAM before disposal; a dead motherboard does not necessarily mean the files on the storage drive are lost.
What happened in the original Hardware Hangout thread?
The original discussion began on August 8, 2020. It considered PSU, motherboard, and CMOS-battery theories, but the owner never confirmed the failed component or a successful repair. The final information indicated that the Q920 remained stored and might be taken to a repair shop. It should therefore be treated as an unresolved troubleshooting report, not as evidence of a confirmed fix.
