On Ubuntu 24.04 or 22.04, the simplest current way to install Stremio is its Flatpak from Flathub. Stremio’s Linux downloads page also lists a Debian/Ubuntu package labeled version 4.4, but that older package can run into dependency problems on newer Ubuntu releases. The Flatpak route avoids many host-library conflicts and provides the current Linux v5 release.
Install Stremio with Flatpak
These commands work on both Ubuntu LTS releases. You will need an internet connection and administrator access to install Flatpak. The commands below configure Flathub, install Stremio, and then launch it:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y flatpak
flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install -y flathub com.stremio.StremioLaunch Stremio from your application launcher, or run:
flatpak run com.stremio.StremioThe first installation may download additional Flatpak runtimes and extensions, so it can use more storage than the application download alone suggests. If Stremio does not appear in the launcher immediately, sign out and back in; you can still start it from the terminal with the command above.

Stremio lists Flatpak on its official Linux downloads page, and its Linux repository identifies the app as com.stremio.Stremio.
Check your system architecture
Stremio’s standard Linux desktop download is 64-bit. On an ordinary Intel or AMD PC, check your Ubuntu architecture with:
dpkg --print-architectureamd64 is the usual result for a 64-bit Intel or AMD system. If the command reports i386, the standard 64-bit build is not suitable. Flathub also lists an aarch64 build, but ARM device support and playback performance depend on the hardware and graphics drivers.

Check that Flatpak can see the app and its installed details:
flatpak list --app | grep -i stremio
flatpak info com.stremio.StremioThen launch it from the terminal:
flatpak run com.stremio.StremioStarting from a terminal is useful if the window does not open: errors printed there may point to a graphics, runtime, permission, or WebKit problem. Once the app opens, test sign-in and interface rendering, then try a legitimate source you expect to work. Successful installation does not guarantee that every add-on, stream, codec, or source will be available or play correctly.
Stremio v5, v4, and the older .deb package
Stremio announced that its Linux v5 release moved from the Flatpak beta channel to stable Flathub on June 26, 2026. The company also cautioned that bugs may remain. This is why a current Flatpak installation and the older Debian package should not be treated as the same version: Stremio’s downloads page still labels its Debian/Ubuntu package as Stremio 4.4.

If you specifically need the .deb, download it from Stremio’s official downloads page, open a terminal in the download folder, and install the actual downloaded filename. For example, if the file matches the pattern shown below:

cd ~/Downloads
sudo apt install ./stremio_*.debThe wildcard is convenient only if it matches the intended package in that folder; check the filename first if you have multiple downloads. Older packages may expect libraries that are missing or mismatched on Ubuntu 24.04—for example, users have reported a missing libmpv1 dependency. Prefer Flatpak rather than forcing an old library from another Ubuntu release or an unofficial repository, which can destabilize package management.
Roll back v5 if it causes a problem
If the current Flatpak version introduces a regression, Stremio documented a rollback to a previous v4 Flatpak commit. Close Stremio and record the installed details first:
flatpak info com.stremio.StremioThen use the version-specific rollback command published in Stremio’s v5 Linux announcement:
sudo flatpak update
--commit=355c42ab40cc747bf964118d0795b36f62e8e1c7c10a2f4b71653992ce828db8
com.stremio.StremioTreat this as a temporary troubleshooting option, not a permanent version pin: the availability and update behavior of a historical commit can change. The same announcement notes that v5 may still contain bugs.

Flatpak command not found
If the shell says that flatpak is not found, install it with APT and retry:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y flatpakFlathub is already configured
The --if-not-exists option makes the setup command safe to repeat when the Flathub remote is already registered. Continue with the installation command.
Stremio does not open, or the window is blank

Start it in a terminal with
flatpak run com.stremio.Stremioand read the output. Look for references to WebKitGTK, GPU or OpenGL, Wayland or X11, permissions, missing codecs, or a crash. -
Update the installed Flatpak applications and runtimes, then try again:

If Flatpak reports installation problems, repair your user installation:
flatpak repair --userFor a system-wide Flatpak installation, an administrator can instead run
sudo flatpak repair. -
If the desktop app still fails, try Stremio Web in a supported browser as a diagnostic. If the web client works while the desktop Flatpak does not, the cause is more likely to involve the desktop client, embedded WebKit environment, graphics stack, or Flatpak integration than the account itself. Browser playback is not identical to desktop playback.

Reinstalling is another option:
flatpak uninstall com.stremio.Stremio
flatpak install -y flathub com.stremio.StremioDo not add --delete-data unless you intend to remove the app’s local data as well as the application.

Flathub lists a Codecs Extra Extension for codecs not included in the base platform. A missing codec can result in a failed stream, a black picture, or audio without video. Install or allow the Flatpak codec components requested for Stremio; avoid downloading unofficial codec packs. Codec support cannot make every stream compatible or available.
Stremio’s Linux client uses GTK4, libadwaita, WebKitGTK, and libmpv, so both interface rendering and video playback can be affected by the graphics and media stack. If playback stutters, update Ubuntu and graphics drivers using Ubuntu’s supported tools, try a lower-resolution stream, and check whether the problem affects every source or only one. Hardware acceleration varies with the GPU, driver, codec, display session, and stream format, so no single setting is guaranteed to fix every machine.
Stremio is the application; it does not guarantee that every add-on or source is authorized, free, or available in your country. Use sources you are entitled to access and follow the copyright laws that apply where you live.

Yes. Stremio lists its browser version separately from the Linux desktop app on its downloads page. Web avoids installing Flatpak and can be useful if the native app will not launch, but browser playback, permissions, codecs, graphics acceleration, and external-player or local-service features may differ from the desktop client.
Uninstall Stremio
Remove the application while retaining its user data:
flatpak uninstall com.stremio.StremioRemove the application and its user data:
flatpak uninstall --delete-data com.stremio.StremioTo remove unused Flatpak runtimes afterward, run:
flatpak uninstall --unusedDo not delete the Flathub remote if you use it for other Flatpak applications. Most desktop users need only the main com.stremio.Stremio app; the separate Stremio Service is not a routine requirement unless a specific feature or troubleshooting instruction calls for it.
