The headline originally referred to The Running Man (1987), Paul Michael Glaser’s Arnold Schwarzenegger film—not The Long Walk. Reports announced that the movie would become available to stream free with ads on Tubi from July 1, 2025. That date has passed, so current availability should be checked directly on Tubi and Pluto TV.

What is the 1987 film about?
Ben Richards is a wrongfully convicted man drawn into a televised contest where contestants are pursued by professional killers. The program is presented as mass entertainment in a dystopian future, turning violence, celebrity, and state power into a spectacle.
Richards must survive the contest while confronting a system designed to manipulate both its participants and its audience. The setup makes the film more than a simple chase: its central conflict is also about media control and public complicity.
How different is the movie from Stephen King’s novel?
The 1987 movie preserves the basic idea of a hunted contestant but substantially reshapes the source material. King’s novel is a darker, more austere social satire about poverty, media manipulation, and a desperate man pursued across America.

That difference is the main trade-off for viewers choosing between them: the film is more immediately accessible as action entertainment, while the book offers a harsher political and social critique.
Why did the film return to the streaming conversation?
The streaming promotion arrived as interest was building around Edgar Wright’s newer adaptation of The Running Man, starring Glen Powell as Ben Richards. The two films offer an opportunity to compare how different filmmakers interpret the same Bachman novel.
The 1987 movie’s return to a free streaming service was not the release of a new Stephen King adaptation. It was a new streaming window for a nearly four-decade-old cult film, promoted partly as a way to revisit the earlier version before or alongside the newer movie.
Not to be confused with The Long Walk
The Long Walk is a separate dystopian story by Stephen King, also originally published under the Richard Bachman name. A March 2026 article used a very similar “dystopian adaptation coming to streaming” framing for its film version, which likely explains some of the confusion.
