Tesla’s Hurry profile tells Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to drive faster and change lanes more often than calmer profiles. In a video, that can look like the car seeking a gap around slower traffic and moving into a faster lane—but one clip cannot establish how every Tesla will behave. The result depends on the car, software, road, traffic and route.
Hurry is a driving-style setting, not an autonomous-driving system or a promise to arrive sooner. Tesla says drivers using FSD (Supervised) must remain attentive and ready to take over.
What Hurry mode looks like in action
Watch for the choices the profile is designed to affect: how readily the car moves around slower traffic, how often it changes lanes, and whether it chooses a faster pace when conditions allow. A maneuver that looks decisive in one sequence might not happen on another road—or on a later software version.

To judge a particular demonstration fairly, note the Tesla model and hardware, software and FSD version, location, road type, weather and traffic. It also matters whether the driver entered a destination, whether the clip is edited, and whether the driver intervened. Without those details, describe what the video appears to show rather than presenting it as a universal rule. A visible lane change, for example, does not prove that Hurry always prefers the left lane or that the car will return to a slower lane promptly.

Tesla’s current owner’s manual characterizes Hurry as driving faster and making more frequent lane changes. It does not specify a single speed increase. Hurry may favor a faster pace where the system considers it appropriate, but it does not guarantee a particular speed, a shorter trip or a successful overtake.
Hurry compared with Tesla’s other profiles

These are preferences, not fixed skill levels or guarantees. The profile does not erase system limitations, road conditions, traffic laws, navigation choices or the need for driver supervision. Tesla’s manual describes Mad Max as more aggressive than Hurry; it has not replaced Hurry.

How to select Hurry
Controls and availability can vary by vehicle and software. In the current Model S manual, the steps are:

- Engage Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
- While FSD is active, tap Self-Driving on the touchscreen.
- Select or adjust the speed profile and choose Hurry.
The manual also lists Controls > Self-Driving as an alternative route. On supported vehicles, the right steering-wheel or yoke scroll wheel can change the profile. Check your car’s displayed instructions if labels differ: Tesla can change menus through software updates. The selected profile is retained for the next use and associated with the driver profile, according to the manual.

If Hurry is missing, check whether FSD (Supervised) is available and active, then look under Controls > Software for the installed software and vehicle capabilities. Install any pending update and confirm your vehicle and market are eligible. A touchscreen restart may address a display issue, but it cannot add a profile that your vehicle or software does not offer. Another owner’s video is not evidence that the same option is available on your car.
Why your Tesla may behave differently
FSD behavior is sensitive to more than the selected profile. Software version, vehicle hardware, market restrictions, speed-limit data, road markings, lane layout, traffic, weather, visibility, navigation route and driver-profile settings can all affect what happens. A car approaching an exit or turn may make different choices from one cruising on a clear highway. Updates can also alter speed strategy, lane selection or driver-monitoring behavior.

That is why footage from one Tesla on a clear California freeway is not a reliable forecast for another car in dense urban traffic, on a British motorway, in poor weather or on a newer software build. If a video does not identify its car and software version, treat it as an illustration of one drive, not a controlled comparison.

Despite the product name, Tesla says Full Self-Driving (Supervised) does not make a vehicle autonomous. The driver must watch the road, remain attentive and be ready to take immediate action. Do not use a phone or assume the car will handle a difficult situation just because Hurry is engaged. Tesla’s Model Y manual also describes attentiveness monitoring and warnings; ignored warnings can lead to feature suspension.

More frequent lane changes may reduce hesitation behind slower vehicles, but they can also make a ride feel aggressive or create more moments when the driver needs to intervene. Higher speeds leave less time to respond if the system misreads a lane, gap or speed limit. A smooth-looking clip shows only that one sequence appeared smooth; it does not demonstrate reliability or establish comparative safety.
Pay particular attention around construction, unclear lane markings, complex merges, unusual intersections, emergency vehicles and poor weather. Hurry does not guarantee that the car will obey a preferred lane choice, correctly interpret a limit, avoid a late maneuver near an exit or return after passing. Tesla’s Model S manual, for example, says FSD activation is available below 85 mph (140 km/h) subject to conditions and vehicle availability; that figure is not a general operating-speed allowance for every model, market or road.
A cautious way to try it
- Choose a familiar road with clear markings, light traffic and good weather.
- Keep your attention on driving and be ready to take over throughout the test.
- Avoid a first trial in a construction zone, heavy rain, a complicated merge or unfamiliar city streets.
- Notice lane choices, braking, passing behavior, exits and whether the car returns to a slower lane when appropriate.
- If the car behaves unexpectedly, take over immediately and disengage FSD using the vehicle’s normal control. Move somewhere safe if needed.
- Record the software version and circumstances if you want to compare behavior. Do not re-engage in the same hazardous situation just to reproduce a maneuver.
Tesla recommends practicing how to disengage FSD in a safe environment before relying on it in traffic. That advice applies regardless of the selected profile.
When does Hurry make sense?
Hurry may suit a driver who wants less hesitation on a well-marked highway in moderate traffic and is comfortable supervising more assertive lane choices. Standard or Chill may be a better fit for heavy traffic, passengers who prefer a calmer ride, or roads where frequent lane changes are uncomfortable. Sloth may suit conditions where a lower-speed, more conservative preference is desired. No profile removes the driver’s responsibility or makes poor conditions suitable for automated driving.
Hurry is best understood as an assertive FSD (Supervised) preference—not a “get there faster” button. Its behavior can vary from one Tesla and software release to another, and the more aggressive Mad Max profile sits above it in Tesla’s current lineup.
