If your microphone is too quiet in Windows 10, select the correct input device and increase its level through Settings → System → Sound → Device Properties → Levels. Raise Microphone to about 80–100, then increase Microphone Boost gradually if that option is available. Test the result while speaking normally; maximum volume is not always the cleanest setting.
“Mic sensitivity” usually means the input level or gain. Windows can amplify the captured signal, but it cannot change the microphone capsule’s physical sensitivity or repair a bad cable, adapter, port, or microphone.
Increase microphone sensitivity from Windows 10 Settings
- Open Start → Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, open Choose your input device and select the microphone you actually want to use.
- Select Device Properties.
- Open the Levels tab in Microphone Properties.
- Raise Microphone to approximately 80–100.
- If available, raise Microphone Boost in small increments.
- Select Apply or OK, then test the microphone.
Adjust the input device—not the speaker or headphone volume. Microsoft documents this Windows 10 procedure in its microphone troubleshooting guide.

What should the Microphone slider be set to?
Start between 80 and 100, but do not treat 100 as a universal correct value. Speak from your normal distance and use the lowest setting that produces a strong, clean signal. An excessive level can cause clipping, distortion, pumping, and louder background noise.

What does Microphone Boost do?
Microphone controls the ordinary Windows input level. Microphone Boost adds additional gain when the regular level is not enough. Boost is dependent on the microphone, connection, and driver, so its value and availability vary. It can make your voice louder while amplifying hiss, fan noise, keyboard sounds, and room noise.
Use the classic Sound Control Panel
If Settings does not show the Levels controls, use the legacy interface:
- Press Win + R, type
mmsys.cpl, and press Enter. - Open the Recording tab.
- Double-click the microphone.
- Open Levels and adjust Microphone and, if present, Microphone Boost.
- Select Apply → OK.
A missing Boost slider is not necessarily a fault. USB, Bluetooth, webcam, and some vendor-controlled devices may manage gain through their own firmware, physical knob, or control software instead of the classic Windows driver.
Test whether Windows is receiving a stronger signal
Return to Start → Settings → System → Sound and use the Test your microphone indicator while speaking normally. Compare the meter before and after changing the level. A moving meter confirms that Windows is receiving input, but it does not prove that the signal is clean or that every application is using the same microphone.

Also record a short sample in Voice Recorder or another known recording application. Listen for both adequate loudness and distortion. OBS Studio is another free option for recording and monitoring a sample; its official download page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 support.
Allow Windows and apps to use the microphone
Open Start → Settings → Privacy → Microphone. Depending on your Windows 10 build, enable:
- Allow access to the microphone on this device
- Allow apps to access your microphone
- Access for desktop applications, where shown
Privacy wording can differ between Windows builds. After an update, permissions may need to be enabled again. Microsoft provides additional permission and device checks in its microphone support instructions.
When Windows works but an app is quiet
Windows’ default input device and an application’s selected microphone are separate settings. In Zoom, Discord, Teams, Skype, OBS, a browser, or a game:

- Open the application’s audio settings.
- Select the same microphone configured in Windows.
- Raise the application’s input volume if it has one.
- Temporarily disable automatic microphone-volume adjustment.
- Temporarily reduce or disable aggressive noise suppression.
- Close other audio programs that may be using exclusive control.
- Restart the application after changing the device or driver.
- Test the microphone in a second application.
If the microphone changes only inside one app, that app’s gain, noise suppression, or automatic gain control is more likely responsible than Windows.
If the microphone is still quiet at 100%
No movement in the Windows input meter
Suspect the wrong device, a mute switch, blocked permission, a loose or incompatible connection, a disabled device, a driver problem, or failed hardware.
- Select the intended microphone and speak while watching the meter.
- Check the headset, keyboard, webcam, or microphone mute switch.
- Reconnect the device and try another USB port.
- Check Settings → Privacy → Microphone.
- Run Start → Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Recording Audio → Run the troubleshooter.
- Open Win + X → Device Manager → Audio inputs and outputs and check for a disabled device or warning icon.
- Install the driver from the laptop, motherboard, headset, webcam, microphone, or audio-interface manufacturer—not a random driver-download site.
- Test another microphone.
The meter moves, but recordings are quiet
Increase the Windows level, add Boost gradually if available, check the app’s input volume, move the microphone closer, face its intended pickup side toward you, and test with enhancements disabled. A weak analog input or unsuitable adapter may also be limiting the signal.

Reduce Boost, move the microphone closer, lower room noise, and keep it away from fans, keyboards, and noisy power supplies. Try another USB port, remove a problematic hub, inspect cables and adapters, and test with enhancements disabled. If the raw signal remains intrinsically weak, better hardware gain or a different microphone may be more effective than software amplification.

The volume keeps changing
Automatic gain control, noise suppression, beamforming, echo cancellation, or vendor effects may be changing the level. Check both the application’s automatic microphone setting and the manufacturer’s audio utility. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause.
Should you disable audio enhancements?
Only use this as a diagnostic step. Enhancements can improve calls, but they can also make a quiet voice sound thin, clipped, distant, or intermittently muted. In Windows 10, the controls may appear in the classic Sound Control Panel or a newer sound-properties page. Temporarily disable noise suppression, automatic gain, echo cancellation, beamforming, and vendor effects; re-enable useful processing after testing. Built-in laptop microphone
Check privacy settings and the laptop’s function-key mute control. Confirm Windows has selected the built-in microphone rather than a headset or webcam. Move closer to the microphone openings, avoid covering them, and reduce fan noise. Manufacturer software may apply beamforming or noise suppression.
3.5-mm microphone or headset
Push the plug fully into the correct jack. A desktop may have separate headphone and microphone sockets, while a four-pole TRRS headset may require a compatible splitter or combo jack. Try the rear motherboard jack if the front-panel jack is noisy or weak. An incorrect adapter can produce no input, very low input, or intermittent input.

USB microphone or headset
Check its physical gain knob and manufacturer software first, then select the USB device explicitly in Windows and the application. Try a direct USB port instead of a hub. Do not assume that USB hardware will expose Microphone Boost.
Bluetooth headset
Confirm Windows is using the headset’s microphone profile, not only its high-quality stereo output profile. Bluetooth hands-free mode can change audio quality and available controls. Test a wired or USB microphone to determine whether Bluetooth is involved.
Webcam microphone
Select the webcam microphone explicitly, check the webcam utility for gain or noise suppression controls, and compare a webcam recording with a separate recording application.
Improve mic volume without adding noise
The most effective first adjustment is usually proximity: place the microphone closer and speak toward its intended pickup area. This improves the voice-to-noise ratio more effectively than simply adding digital gain. A boom or stand also keeps distance consistent. Avoid placing the microphone beside a laptop fan, keyboard, or power supply, and check that a headset boom has not been rotated into a mute position.
If a clean signal is consistently too weak, a hardware gain knob or audio interface is generally preferable to heavy Windows Boost. An XLR microphone may need a suitable preamp. Software mixers such as VB-Audio Voicemeeter can provide advanced routing and gain, but virtual devices add complexity and can cause incorrect routing or feedback. Use them only after the normal Windows, application, connection, and driver checks.
When hardware replacement makes sense
Consider replacing an adapter, cable, interface, or microphone only after testing the device, port, and application on another computer. A headset is often better for close voice pickup and background rejection; a USB desktop microphone can offer convenient dedicated controls; an XLR microphone and interface suit users who need proper preamp gain. None automatically fixes poor placement, incorrect routing, a defective cable, or a muted device.
Windows 10 support note
Windows 10 Home and Pro, including version 22H2, reached the end of ordinary support on October 14, 2025. The system still runs, but standard security updates, feature updates, and Microsoft technical support are no longer provided. LTSC editions have separate lifecycles, and eligible consumer Extended Security Updates may extend security coverage through October 12, 2027. - Unmute the physical microphone.
- Select the correct Windows input device.
- Enable microphone privacy permissions.
- Raise the Windows Microphone level.
- Add Microphone Boost gradually, if available.
- Check the application’s input device and volume.
- Disable enhancements temporarily.
- Try another port, cable, or adapter.
- Install the manufacturer’s audio driver.
- Test the microphone on another computer.
