If “Hey Siri” stopped working with your AirPods Pro after updating to iOS 26, start by checking whether Siri can still be activated by pressing and holding an AirPods stem. That quick test helps separate a voice-trigger problem from an AirPods connection, microphone, or Siri problem. Next, check Siri’s setting and retrain voice recognition, then restart and reconnect the AirPods. Resetting the AirPods—not the iPhone’s entire settings—is a later step.
Apple’s current AirPods guide still documents Siri voice activation, and the sources reviewed do not establish a general iOS 26 bug affecting “Hey Siri” on AirPods Pro. The timing may point to a stale setting or Bluetooth state, but it does not by itself prove that the update caused a widespread incompatibility.
First, identify what is failing
“Siri doesn’t work” can mean several different things. Note which symptom you have before changing settings:

- Siri appears but does not understand you: Check microphone routing and obstruction, the selected Siri language, and whether another app is using the microphone.
- Siri hears you but does not speak: Check Siri’s spoken-response setting, volume while Siri is responding, and the selected audio output.
- Siri works when you hold the iPhone side button, but not through the AirPods: Siri is available on the phone; focus first on the AirPods voice trigger, connection, and microphone path.
- Holding the AirPods stem works but “Hey Siri” does not: The AirPods can reach Siri, so focus on the voice-trigger setting, retraining, and language.
- Neither the stem nor voice activation works: Check pairing, Bluetooth routing, firmware, and microphone function before concluding the AirPods need service.
Use the steps below in order and test again after each change. That makes it easier to find the cause without doing a disruptive reset unnecessarily.

1. Confirm the AirPods are really connected
- Put both AirPods Pro in your ears and play audio. Confirm you hear it through the AirPods rather than the iPhone speaker or another device.
- Open Control Center and check the audio output selected in AirPlay.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and check that the AirPods show as connected.
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, wait about 15 seconds, then open the case and reconnect.
If the AirPods are not listed as an audio destination or will not connect, follow Apple’s AirPods connection troubleshooting steps before diagnosing Siri.
Check for a false “connected” state
One Apple Support Community user reported that Siri began working after clearing a misleading state in which the iPhone appeared to show the AirPods as connected while they were in the case. This is an anecdotal workaround, not a confirmed fix for iOS 26. If your phone shows that behavior, try this isolation test:
- Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on the iPhone.
- Reseat both AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Reopen the case and check whether the false connection indication has cleared.
- Turn Bluetooth back on, reconnect the AirPods, and test Siri.
2. Test Siri using the AirPods Pro stem
Wear the AirPods and press and hold the stem. Wait for Siri’s chime, then try a simple request, such as “What time is it?” Apple documents press-and-hold as another way to activate Siri on AirPods Pro.
- The stem works, but “Hey Siri” does not: Go to the next step and check voice activation and retraining.
- Siri activates but cannot hear the request: Check the AirPods microphone and whether another app or call is using it.
- Siri hears the request but is silent: Check Siri Responses and the volume while Siri is speaking.
- The stem does not activate Siri either: Check that the stem control is assigned to Siri, then continue with the connection steps below.
To check the control, open Settings and tap the connected AirPods name near the top of the screen. Under Press and Hold AirPods, select the left or right AirPod and choose Siri. Available labels may differ by iOS version or model. Apple’s AirPods Siri guide covers the supported controls.

3. Check and retrain Siri in iOS 26
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri.
- Tap Talk & Type to Siri or, on some configurations, Talk to Siri.
- Make sure the displayed Siri voice-activation option is enabled. The wording may be Siri or Hey Siri.
If it is already enabled, turn off Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri” (the label varies), restart the iPhone, return to the same setting, turn it back on, and complete the voice-recognition prompts. Apple recommends toggling the setting and repeating setup if Siri does not recognize your voice. See Apple’s Siri troubleshooting guide.
Do not assume that the shorter “Siri” wake phrase is available on every AirPods model or in every language and region. Apple says AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 support either “Siri” or “Hey Siri,” subject to availability; other models may require “Hey Siri.” Test the option actually shown on your iPhone rather than relying on a setting another user has.
4. If Siri hears you but does not answer aloud
- Open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri or Settings > Siri.
- Tap Siri Responses.
- Select Prefer Spoken Responses.
Apple says this setting makes Siri speak even when Silent Mode is on. Also raise the volume while Siri is speaking: Siri’s response volume may not match the level you use for ordinary music or video. 5. Test with the AirPods microphone free
Try Siri while the AirPods are idle. Pause music or podcasts, end phone and FaceTime calls, stop video recording, and close apps that may be using the microphone. Then test in a quiet place. An Apple Support Community specialist has advised that microphone use during a call or recording can affect Siri availability; treat this as community troubleshooting guidance, not a formal, universal Apple rule. If the problem is that Siri activates but does not hear you, inspect the microphone openings for dust or debris. Clean only using dry, Apple-safe methods; do not insert sharp tools or liquid into the openings. Test a phone call or Voice Memo with the AirPods connected, and test each AirPod separately if possible. A successful call alone does not prove every Siri audio path is working, but muffled recordings or callers consistently unable to hear you point toward a microphone issue rather than only a Siri setting.
6. Check language, region, VPN, and network
Open Siri’s settings and confirm that the selected language and regional variant match the way you speak. If the problem began after the update, temporarily try a standard variant you can comfortably speak, such as English (United States), retrain Siri, and test again. One user reported that switching from an India-English variant to US English restored voice input, but that is an anecdote—not evidence of a confirmed iOS 26 defect. See the user report.
Apple notes that Siri features and commands vary by language, country, and region. It also warns that some VPN profiles may prevent Siri from appearing in Settings or functioning correctly. If you use a VPN or a work/school management profile, temporarily test without the VPN if permitted, and test once over Wi-Fi and once over cellular data. Do not remove a managed profile without checking with its administrator. Apple’s Siri support article explains these availability and VPN qualifications.
7. Restart the iPhone and reconnect the AirPods
Before forgetting or resetting anything, restart the iPhone. Then put the AirPods in their case, close the lid for 15–30 seconds, reopen it, reconnect, and test both stem activation and “Hey Siri.” This low-risk step can refresh the phone’s connection to the AirPods.

If you own an Apple Watch, HomePod, or Mac, temporarily make the other devices unavailable for a test—for example, remove the Watch or turn off Bluetooth on the Mac. This is a routing-isolation test, not a documented iOS 26-specific bug. It can help identify whether another device or accessory is involved when the wrong device responds or the audio route seems inconsistent.
8. Forget and pair the AirPods again
If reconnection does not help, remove the Bluetooth pairing and set it up again:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the information button beside the AirPods.
- Choose Forget This Device or the equivalent removal option.
- Put the AirPods into pairing mode and pair them again with the iPhone.
- Check the stem’s Siri assignment and test voice activation.
Removing the AirPods means you must pair them again. Apple says they can be paired again with a device associated with the same Apple Account. The pairing-mode procedure varies by model: most AirPods Pro models use the setup button on the back of the case, while newer cases may use front-case gestures. Follow the model-specific on-screen instructions rather than applying one generation’s button procedure to all cases. See Apple’s unpairing and reset guide and connection guide.

9. Reset AirPods Pro only if simpler steps fail
Resetting AirPods clears their pairing state and requires setup again. It does not reset the iPhone or erase the iPhone’s personal data. Check the generation first: AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use a rear setup button; AirPods Pro 3 use a different case gesture.

AirPods Pro 1 or AirPods Pro 2
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds.
- Release when the status light flashes amber, then white.
- Pair the AirPods again.
AirPods Pro 3
- Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- Open the lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case three times.
- Wait for the status light to flash amber, then white, and pair the AirPods again.
These generation-specific instructions are in Apple’s current AirPods user guide. Do not use the Pro 3 gesture on a Pro 1 or Pro 2 case, or the older button procedure on Pro 3.
10. Let AirPods firmware update automatically
AirPods firmware is delivered automatically; there is no ordinary “Update now” button. To give an update a chance to install:
- Install the latest iOS update available for your iPhone and turn on Bluetooth.
- Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi and connect the AirPods to it.
- Put the AirPods in their case and connect the case to power.
- Close the lid and keep the case near the iPhone for at least 30 minutes.
- Reconnect the AirPods and check the firmware version in their settings.
Firmware versions depend on the AirPods model and can change, so use Apple’s firmware update instructions rather than relying on a potentially outdated version number. If the update does not arrive, Apple recommends resetting the AirPods and trying again.
11. Install any newer iOS 26 update offered
If Settings offers a later iOS 26 point release, back up the iPhone and install it. Software updates can fix Siri-related issues, but this is not a guaranteed AirPods remedy. The iOS 26 release-note Siri voice-input item reviewed by Apple refers to the Simulator; it does not confirm a general Siri problem on physical iPhones using AirPods Pro. Check Apple’s iOS 26 release notes for the update you install.

When to contact Apple
Contact Apple Support rather than repeatedly resetting the phone if Siri still fails after retraining Siri, reconnecting or resetting the AirPods, and testing the microphone. Service is especially appropriate if calls and recordings also fail, one earbud consistently fails, the AirPods cannot pair with another compatible Apple device, the issue persists across another iPhone or iPad, or the case light does not behave as expected during reset or pairing.
Before contacting support, note your iPhone model, exact iOS 26 point version, AirPods Pro generation, and AirPods firmware version. Also record whether stem activation works, whether the microphones work in calls and Voice Memos, whether each earbud works separately, and whether the problem happens with another Apple device. These results help distinguish a phone configuration issue from an AirPods fault.
Do not buy replacement AirPods before these checks: a replacement will not fix a Siri setting, language, VPN, or phone-side Bluetooth-routing issue. Apple service and replacement eligibility depend on region, warranty, and diagnostic results.
