Leica unveiled the Leitz Phone 3 on April 11, 2024, as a camera-focused Android smartphone manufactured by Sharp and sold through SoftBank in Japan from April 19. Its headline feature is a Leica-specified 47.2-megapixel effective-resolution main camera built around a 1-inch-type sensor, but the phone’s appeal extends to Leica-inspired image processing, a 240Hz display, 512GB of storage and a headphone jack.
It was not launched as a globally distributed Leica flagship. Leica described availability as exclusive to Japan, making carrier compatibility and after-sales support especially important for anyone considering an import.

What the 47.2MP camera actually means
The Leitz Phone 3 does not use a generic “47MP” camera in the way launch headlines can suggest. Leica lists a 47.2MP effective-resolution main camera. “47MP” is therefore a rounded shorthand, while the more precise official figure is 47.2MP.

The sensor is a 1-inch-type CMOS design. That term describes an established sensor class; it does not mean the active imaging area measures exactly one inch across. Its larger area can help gather more light than the smaller sensors commonly used in phones, but sensor size alone does not guarantee better photographs.
The rest of the camera package matters just as much: the main lens is a very wide 19mm equivalent with an f/1.9 aperture, and autofocus uses Octa Phase Detection Autofocus. The phone also includes a 1.9MP distance sensor and a 14-channel spectral sensor intended to assist with focusing, depth information and color analysis. The front camera offers 12.6MP effective resolution with a 27mm-equivalent f/2.3 lens.
The 19mm field of view is useful for landscapes, architecture, interiors and dramatic close perspectives. It is wider than the roughly 24–28mm-equivalent main cameras found on many phones, however, so photographers who prefer a more natural perspective may need to crop or use digital zoom. The Leitz Phone 3 also does not offer the multi-camera flexibility of many international flagship phones with dedicated telephoto and ultrawide cameras.

The Leica identity is expressed through software as well as hardware. The camera app includes Leitz Looks, rendering modes inspired by selected Leica M lenses:
- Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2
- Summilux-M 28mm f/1.4
- Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4
These are computational looks intended to evoke the character of those lenses. They do not turn the phone into an interchangeable-lens Leica camera, and the modes should be understood as image-rendering profiles rather than optical lens attachments.
Leica also describes a variable-aperture feature that simulates different aperture settings and depth-of-field effects. The available launch material does not establish that the phone has a mechanically changing iris, so it is more accurate to describe this as a software-based aperture and depth-of-field simulation.
Perspective Control and JPEG limitation
Leica Perspective Control uses gyroscope data and software processing to correct converging vertical lines in architectural photographs. That can be useful when photographing tall buildings while holding the phone below the subject.

There is an important file-format qualification: Leica says the correction is applied to the JPEG. Photographers who rely on RAW files should not assume that the corrected perspective is embedded in an equivalent RAW capture.
Watermarks and photography widgets
A Leica watermark can display image metadata such as aperture, ISO, shutter speed and focal length alongside the Leitz logo. It is a presentation feature rather than evidence of improved image quality.
The phone also includes an LFI Widget, which displays photographs from Leica Fotografie International, and a Golden Hour Widget that identifies useful periods around sunrise and sunset.
Hardware beyond the camera
The Leitz Phone 3 uses a 6.6-inch Pro IGZO OLED display with a 2,730 × 1,260 resolution and refresh rates of up to 240Hz. Leica lists maximum brightness at 2,000 nits. The high refresh rate can make scrolling and supported games feel smoother, although refresh behavior can vary by application and operating mode.

That capacity is generous for photographs and video, and the microSDXC slot supports cards up to 1TB. The phone retains a 3.5mm headphone/microphone jack, alongside USB Type-C, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC/mobile-wallet support.
The 5,000mAh battery is housed in a device measuring approximately 77 × 161 × 9.3mm. Leica lists thickness at about 12.1mm including the lens projection, and weight at approximately 209g.
Water and dust protection
Leica lists separate ratings of IPX5, IPX8 and IP6X. These should not be casually reduced to “IP68.” IPX5 and IPX8 describe water resistance under different test conditions, while IP6X describes dust protection. As with any phone, ports, seals and physical damage can affect real-world resistance; “waterproof” is too absolute a description.

Leica, Sharp and SoftBank: who made what?
The Leitz Phone 3 is best understood as a collaboration rather than a phone independently manufactured by Leica. Sharp manufactures the handset, while Leica supplies the design direction, camera identity, imaging features and branding. SoftBank was the Japanese sales channel.
That relationship also places the phone in the broader Sharp camera-phone lineage. Sharp’s official Aquos R8 Pro specifications show a related hardware context, including the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 generation, a 5,000mAh battery class, microSD support and a 3.5mm jack. That does not prove the two phones are identical: camera tuning, components, industrial design and software can differ substantially.

The original launch was Japan-exclusive. SoftBank announced Japanese sales beginning April 19, 2024, and Leica’s international release did not present the model as a normal U.S. or worldwide retail product.
The official sources reviewed do not establish a reliable current new-unit price or confirm that ordinary new sales remain open as of August 2026. Buyers should check the retailer or carrier listing at the time of purchase rather than rely on an old launch figure or an unsourced marketplace price.
The phone launched with Android 14. Sharp’s support records document an Android 16 update released in 2026, but Japanese software support should not be treated as a guarantee that an imported handset will receive identical updates or carrier functionality outside Japan.
SoftBank’s support material continues to document the model and lists repair intake as currently accepted with a planned end date of March 31, 2028, subject to change. That is useful for Japanese owners, but imported-device buyers should confirm whether repair, parts and warranty service are available in their own country.

What import buyers need to check
SoftBank warns that operation on networks other than SoftBank is not guaranteed. The published band table includes some international LTE, 3G and 5G bands, but a band match alone is not enough to establish reliable service. Compatibility can also depend on carrier provisioning, VoLTE, emergency calling, SIM behavior and local network requirements.
A March 12, 2026 Sharp support notice recorded an improvement for a problem in which emergency calls could fail with certain U.S. SIM cards. That makes imported-device checking a practical safety issue, not merely a theoretical concern. Anyone importing the phone should verify compatibility with the exact carrier and SIM before treating it as a dependable primary phone. The relevant SoftBank frequency-band document and Sharp support page are the appropriate starting points.
Who is the Leitz Phone 3 for?
The phone makes the most sense for a narrow audience:
- Leica enthusiasts who value the design, branding and Leica-specific interface.
- Japanese buyers who want a large-sensor camera phone with extensive storage.
- Photographers who prefer a wide 19mm-equivalent main camera and Leica-inspired rendering.
- Users who specifically want a 3.5mm jack, microSD expansion and a high-refresh-rate display.
It is a poor fit for buyers who need plug-and-play U.S. carrier support, a current-generation processor, multiple optical focal lengths or the best value per specification. Leica branding and lens-look modes also do not make it equivalent to a dedicated Leica camera, and the official launch material does not establish that it is the best camera phone.
Verdict
The Leica Leitz Phone 3 is a distinctive specialist handset, not a conventional global flagship. Its strongest case is the combination of a 47.2MP effective-resolution, 1-inch-type main camera, Leica-oriented processing, 512GB storage, microSD expansion and a photography-focused design. Its biggest limitations are equally clear: Japan-only distribution, uncertain current new-stock pricing, older launch-era silicon and potentially difficult overseas carrier support.
For the right Japanese buyer or committed Leica collector, that combination is unusual. For most international buyers, the first question should be whether the imported phone will work reliably on their network—not whether the number on the camera specification says 47MP.
