Apple released iOS 26.4 on March 24, 2026. The update added major Apple Music features, accessibility controls, new emoji, Freeform and Reminders improvements, adult Family Sharing payment options, AirPods Max 2 support, keyboard refinements, and important security fixes.
iOS 26.4 is no longer the newest iOS 26 release: Apple has since issued 26.4.1, 26.4.2, 26.5, 26.5.1, 26.5.2, and 26.6. If your iPhone offers a newer compatible update, install that instead of specifically seeking iOS 26.4.
Quick verdict
iOS 26.4 is worth installing if your iPhone is still running iOS 26.3 or earlier, primarily because of its security fixes. Apple Music users, people who rely on accessibility controls, and users of Freeform, Reminders, Family Sharing, or fast text input also gain useful improvements.

If you already use iOS 26.4.1 or later, do not downgrade or reinstall 26.4. Install the newest version shown under Settings → General → Software Update.

What is iOS 26.4?
iOS 26.4 is a feature update within the iOS 26 generation, not a completely new operating-system redesign. Apple’s official release notes group its changes into Apple Music, accessibility, emoji and accessory support, Freeform, Reminders, Family Sharing, keyboard improvements, bug fixes, and security updates.
The update was released on March 24, 2026. Its broad compatibility boundary is iPhone 11 and later, including the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), iPhone 12 series, and newer compatible generations. Compatibility does not mean every feature is available on every iPhone. Apple notes that features may vary by model, region, language, account, and service availability.

Playlist Playground
Playlist Playground is Apple’s beta tool for generating a playlist from a description. You might ask for “a mellow acoustic playlist for a rainy Sunday,” “a 45-minute running playlist,” or “energetic songs for a dinner party.” Apple Music can produce a title, description, and tracklist.

Concert discovery
The new Concerts experience helps identify nearby concerts by artists in your Apple Music library and recommends additional artists based on listening behavior. Its usefulness depends on your location, local event data, artist coverage, and whether relevant listings exist in your area.
Offline Music Recognition
Music Recognition in Control Center can now identify songs without an internet connection. The result is delivered automatically when the iPhone reconnects. This is different from ordinary online recognition: the key change is that an offline detection can be completed later rather than failing immediately.

Ambient Music widget
The new Ambient Music widget provides quick access to curated Apple Music playlists for Sleep, Chill, Productivity, and Wellbeing. It is a Home Screen shortcut for listening, not a separate music service.

Album and playlist pages receive full-screen backgrounds for a more immersive visual presentation. This is a design refinement, not an improvement to audio quality.
Accessibility improvements
Reduce Bright Effects
Reduce Bright Effects minimizes bright flashes that can appear when tapping interface elements such as buttons. It may be useful for people sensitive to flashing or sudden changes in brightness, but it does not eliminate every bright effect in every app.
Easier subtitle and caption controls
Subtitle and caption settings are easier to access from the captions icon while viewing supported media. Users can locate, customize, and preview caption options without navigating as deeply through settings.
More reliable Reduce Motion behavior
The Reduce Motion setting more reliably reduces Liquid Glass animations. People who experience discomfort from movement should test the setting with the apps and media they use most, since it does not remove every animation.

Eight new emoji
Apple says iOS 26.4 adds eight emoji. Examples include an orca, trombone, landslide, ballet dancer, and distorted face. The exact emoji shown can vary with platform rendering and keyboard language.

AirPods Max 2 support
iOS 26.4 adds support for AirPods Max 2. This is accessory compatibility; it does not turn the original AirPods Max into the newer model.
Freeform image tools
Freeform gains advanced image creation and editing tools, a premium content library, and integration with Apple Creator Studio. The operating-system update adds support for these capabilities, but it does not mean every premium content feature or Creator Studio service is free or available to every user. Availability and licensing may differ.
Urgent reminders
You can mark a reminder as urgent from the Quick Toolbar or by touching and holding it. Smart Lists can filter for urgent reminders, making it easier to triage time-sensitive tasks without creating a separate list or manually adding a naming convention.

Adult members of a Family Sharing group can use their own payment method for purchases instead of always relying on the family organizer. This does not remove the organizer’s role, and payment flexibility is separate from purchase-sharing settings. Apple specifically refers to adult members, so this should not be generalized to child accounts.
Improved fast-typing accuracy
Apple describes better keyboard accuracy when typing quickly. That is an intended improvement, not a published guarantee of a specific error-rate reduction. Results can vary with language, keyboard settings, typing style, and iPhone model.
Security fixes
The security case for updating is stronger than the feature list alone. Apple’s iOS 26.4 security bulletin lists fixes across components including 802.1X, Accounts, App Protection, Audio, Baseband, Calendar, Calling Framework, Clipboard, CoreMedia, CoreUtils, and Crash Reporter.

Among the documented issues:
- An 802.1X vulnerability could allow an attacker in a privileged network position to intercept network traffic.
- An Accounts issue could allow an app to access sensitive user data.
- An App Protection issue involved devices with Stolen Device Protection enabled and access to biometrics-gated Protected Apps using a passcode.
- Other fixes addressed crashes, denial-of-service conditions, malformed media, clipboard handling, and possible data exposure.
These fixes matter even if you do not use Apple Music. The bulletin does not mean that every vulnerability was actively exploited in the wild, so iOS 26.4 should not automatically be described as a zero-day update.

How to install iOS 26.4 or a newer update
- Back up your iPhone.
- Connect it to power and Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Select the available update and tap Download and Install.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Apple says updates require a compatible device, power, an internet connection, and enough available storage. The version offered depends on your current software, model, region, and Apple’s update availability. See Apple’s official update and troubleshooting guide for additional requirements.

Not enough storage
Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Enable Offload Unused Apps if offered. Delete or move large files only after confirming they are backed up.
Download is slow
Use a reliable Wi-Fi connection and avoid simultaneous large downloads or streaming. Retry later if Apple’s servers are busy.
Verification or update-server error
Retry on the same network, then try another Wi-Fi network. If the error continues, connect the iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC and update it through the computer.

Go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage, select the downloaded iOS update, and tap Delete Update. Return to Settings → General → Software Update and download it again.

Apple logo or frozen installation
Keep the iPhone connected to power. If it remains stuck on the Apple logo, follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions rather than repeatedly forcing restarts.
What iOS 26.4 did not include
Encrypted RCS was not a final iOS 26.4 feature
Apple’s developer notes mentioned end-to-end encrypted RCS as beta material for testing, but said it was not shipping in that release. Apple’s support documentation associates end-to-end encrypted RCS beta messaging with iOS 26.5. Do not list encrypted RCS as an iOS 26.4 feature.

The new Siri was not part of final iOS 26.4
Reports about a substantially smarter Siri should not be presented as an iOS 26.4 feature. Apple’s June 2026 announcement tied its next-generation Apple Intelligence and Siri features to iOS 27 and later software.

Availability and feature limitations
Apple’s feature-availability page warns that iOS features can vary by region and language. Playlist Playground, concert data, captions, Family Sharing payment options, Apple Intelligence-related functions, and other services may also depend on account, carrier, model, or local availability.
Therefore, an iPhone that supports iOS 26.4 may not show every feature described above. This is especially important for Apple Music discovery tools, premium Freeform content, and any feature that depends on online services.
Should you install iOS 26.4?

Users with older or low-storage iPhones may want to prepare storage first. Software updates can temporarily affect battery life or performance while indexing and background tasks complete. If the phone supports a business-critical enterprise, medical, accessibility, or financial workflow, confirm that the relevant apps work with the intended update before installing.
