If your laptop’s brightness control is missing, the slider moves without changing the screen, or the brightness keys do nothing, restart the laptop first and then update or reinstall the integrated graphics driver from the laptop manufacturer. That is the most reliable Windows fix, but the correct solution depends on whether the problem affects the built-in display, an external monitor, keyboard keys, or automatic brightness.
Identify the brightness problem first

Try these quick fixes first
- Restart the laptop. Save your work and restart Windows, macOS, or ChromeOS. This is especially important if the problem began after sleep, hibernation, docking, or unplugging the charger.
- Test the software brightness slider. This separates a display-driver problem from a keyboard or hotkey problem.
- Try the brightness keys with and without
Fn. Also toggle the keyboard’s Fn-lock key if it has one. - Disconnect the dock or external monitor. Test the laptop panel by itself.
- Update the laptop’s integrated graphics driver. Prefer the exact driver supplied for your laptop model.
Do not begin with registry edits or third-party “driver updater” utilities. They can introduce a second problem and are not needed for the standard troubleshooting path.
Fix brightness in Windows 11
In Windows 11, select the network, volume, or battery area on the taskbar to open Quick Settings, then move the Brightness slider. You can also open Settings > System > Display and adjust brightness there. Microsoft documents these controls and the related automatic-brightness settings in its Windows brightness guide.
If the slider is missing, first disconnect any external display. Windows may not show a built-in-panel brightness slider when an external monitor is selected. If the slider is present but ineffective, continue with the driver steps below.

Fix brightness in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses Settings > System > Display. Depending on the version, the brightness control may also appear in Action Center. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so it should be treated as a legacy platform. If the laptop supports Windows 11, upgrading may be preferable after checking its hardware and software compatibility.
Update or reinstall the Windows display driver
Microsoft recommends updating the display adapter when the brightness slider is missing or does not work.
Update through Device Manager
- Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts and restart the laptop.
Look for a warning icon, a disabled adapter, or Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Any of these can indicate that the proper graphics driver is missing or not operating correctly.

For a laptop, download the graphics driver for the exact model from the manufacturer’s support page before using a generic driver. Graphics, hotkeys, power management, hybrid graphics, and firmware can depend on compatible versions.
Intel advises trying both the current Intel graphics driver and the computer manufacturer’s driver when troubleshooting brightness. The manufacturer’s package is generally the safer first choice for laptop-specific behavior.

Reinstall when Windows says the driver is current
- Download the correct graphics driver for the exact laptop model.
- In Device Manager, right-click the display adapter and select Uninstall device.
- Restart the laptop.
- Install the downloaded manufacturer driver.
- Restart again and test both the slider and the brightness keys.
On a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, update the integrated Intel or AMD adapter first. Updating only an NVIDIA or discrete AMD gaming GPU may not repair brightness control for the built-in panel. This is a common hybrid-graphics troubleshooting pattern, not a universal hardware rule.
If the brightness slider is missing
- Disconnect HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C monitors, and docks.
- Open Settings > System > Display and confirm the internal display is selected.
- Check Device Manager > Display adapters.
- Enable a disabled adapter or replace Microsoft Basic Display Adapter with the correct manufacturer driver.
- Restart Windows and check the slider again.
If multiple adapters are listed, install the laptop maker’s integrated graphics driver, then check its chipset, BIOS, and firmware packages. HP’s display troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking these packages when the built-in display behaves differently from an external monitor.

This usually points to a graphics-driver, firmware, HDR, or display-path problem rather than a missing Windows control.
- Restart the laptop.
- Reinstall the manufacturer’s integrated graphics driver.
- Temporarily turn HDR off under Settings > System > Display > HDR.
- Test brightness again.
- Install the manufacturer’s hotkey, chipset, and system-interface packages if available.
Microsoft documents HDR-related brightness behavior after power-state changes in its HDR troubleshooting guidance. Turning HDR off is a diagnostic test, not necessarily the permanent solution.
A specific example illustrates why model details matter: Dell says AMD graphics driver 31.0.21910.1006, A05 or later resolves an LCD-brightness issue on affected Inspiron and Vostro systems. That version is not a universal recommendation for every Dell laptop or every AMD system.

If only the brightness keys fail
Look for keys marked with a sun symbol. Try the key alone and then with Fn. If the keyboard has an Fn-lock key, toggle it and test again. The exact combination varies by laptop model and generation; even different Dell models may not behave identically.
If an on-screen brightness indicator appears but the panel does not change, the keyboard is probably sending the command. Reinstall the graphics driver and the manufacturer’s hotkey or system-interface package. Package names vary and may include Hotkey Support, Function Key service, System Interface Foundation, Lenovo Utility, HP System Event Utility, or a Dell keyboard enhancement package.
Download the package only from the support page for the exact laptop model. Dell documents model-specific changes in whether Fn is required for brightness keys.
Stop brightness from changing automatically
Ambient-light brightness
In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display and inspect the brightness controls. If available, disable Change brightness automatically when lighting changes. This option appears only on systems with the required hardware or firmware.
Content-adaptive brightness
Some Windows 11 laptops offer Change brightness based on content with options such as Off, Always, and On Battery Only. Choose Off if you need stable brightness for photo, video, or design work. The trade-off is potentially higher power use and shorter battery life.

HDR and battery behavior
Test the laptop both plugged in and on battery, with Battery Saver on and off, and after waking from sleep. If brightness changes only between AC and battery power, inspect adaptive brightness, content-adaptive brightness, HDR, and the manufacturer’s power-management application. Do not disable every power-management feature indiscriminately; some reduce heat and battery consumption.
Night Light is different
Night Light changes color temperature and can make the screen look yellow or warm. It does not directly repair a brightness-control failure. A warm tint suggests Night Light or a color profile; a genuinely dim image points more toward brightness, HDR, adaptive behavior, or hardware. If Night Light is unavailable or grayed out, Microsoft says the display driver may need updating.
Check the laptop’s hotkey and firmware packages
If brightness stopped working after a BIOS update, Windows update, sleep/wake event, or driver change, check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. Look for graphics, chipset, BIOS, firmware, hotkey, and system-interface updates.
Install BIOS updates only with reliable AC power and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not attempt a BIOS downgrade unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that procedure. If the issue began after a graphics-driver update, rolling back to the previous manufacturer-approved driver may help, although it can forfeit newer fixes or security improvements.

External-monitor exception
A laptop’s brightness slider usually controls the built-in panel, not an external monitor connected through HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or a dock. Adjust the external screen with its physical buttons, its manufacturer’s application, or a compatible DDC/CI utility if the monitor supports it.

Disconnect the external display temporarily and test the laptop screen alone. If the laptop panel works but the external monitor does not respond to Windows brightness controls, that behavior may be normal rather than a laptop failure.
MacBook: brightness troubleshooting
Do not apply Windows driver instructions to a MacBook.
- Press the built-in brightness keys.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays.
- Move the Brightness slider.
- If available, test Automatically adjust brightness.
- If the keys do nothing, hold the
Fnor Globe key where applicable and check the keyboard-function configuration.
Apple notes that the top row can control built-in Mac features or act as standard function keys, depending on configuration. If the display takes time to reach full brightness, Apple recommends allowing it to warm up, checking that brightness is not turned off, and enabling the ambient-light sensor where available.

Chromebook: brightness troubleshooting
- Use the dedicated brightness keys or select the time in the status area and adjust the brightness control.
- Restart the Chromebook.
- Test the keys while browsing as a guest.
- Open Settings > About ChromeOS > Diagnostics and test the keyboard.
- If the problem remains, contact the Chromebook manufacturer.
With an external display connected, open Settings > Device > Displays and select Built-in Display before diagnosing the laptop panel. Google documents these keyboard and display troubleshooting paths in its Chromebook keyboard help and display guide.
When the problem is probably hardware
Software is less likely to be the only cause when:
- The display remains dim at every software brightness level.
- The screen flickers, shows lines, or changes when the lid moves.
- The laptop was dropped, exposed to liquid, overheated, or suffered hinge damage.
- An external monitor works while the built-in panel stays dark.
- The correct driver is installed but brightness fails in Windows and in the manufacturer’s diagnostics or BIOS/UEFI screen.
Failure outside the operating system makes a purely Windows-settings explanation less likely, but it does not identify the exact failed component. Possible causes include the panel, backlight, display cable, firmware, or motherboard. At this point, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and arrange service rather than repeatedly reinstalling drivers.
