The same Phone app method works on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Call one person, use More → Add People to call another, then tap Merge Calls. Your carrier, iOS version, and calling setup—not the Pro Max model—determine which options are available.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide says GSM conference calls can support up to five people, depending on the carrier.
How to make a conference call on iPhone
- Open the Phone app and call the first person.
- Wait until the call connects, then tap More. Depending on the iOS version and call screen, this may appear as an additional-controls button.
- Tap Add People.
- Choose a contact or enter the next person’s phone number and place the call.
- When the second call connects, tap Merge Calls.
- To add another person, repeat More → Add People → call → Merge Calls.
A three-way call is simply a conference call with three people total: you and two other callers. Follow the same steps and stop after the first merge.
How to add more participants
After merging the first two calls, tap More, choose Add People, call the next participant, and tap Merge Calls after they answer. Repeat this cycle as needed.

Do not treat five participants as a guaranteed universal limit. Apple specifies up to five people for GSM conference calls, but the carrier determines whether conference calling is enabled and how many people the line can support. Limits can also vary by country, plan, and network technology.
How to add someone who calls you during the conference
- When the incoming call appears, tap Hold Call & Answer.
- After the new caller connects, tap Merge Calls.
Some carriers or iOS versions may label the controls Accept and Merge instead. If merging is unavailable, keep the incoming call separate or return to the original conference.

How to speak privately with one participant
- Tap More Info beside the participant list.
- Tap Private next to the person you want to speak with.
- Tap Merge Calls when you want to return everyone to the conference.
Private conversations and participant controls depend on carrier support and the type of connection. The person who started the conference may have more complete controls than another participant.

- Tap More Info beside the participant list.
- Tap End next to the person you want to remove.
This ends that participant’s connection without necessarily ending the entire conference. The available participant list and controls can vary by carrier and call configuration.

Why is “Merge Calls” missing?
The most likely reason is carrier or network support, not an iPhone 15, 16, or 17 hardware problem. Apple warns that conference calling or some conference-call functions may be unavailable when calls use VoLTE or Wi‑Fi Calling. Apple also recommends contacting your carrier if the merge option is unavailable.

Turn off Wi‑Fi Calling temporarily
On current iOS versions, open Settings → Cellular → [your line] → Wi‑Fi Calling, then turn off Wi‑Fi Calling on This iPhone. The exact wording can vary by region or configuration. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi Calling instructions.

Restart the iPhone and try again if the option remains unavailable. If ordinary calls work but merging consistently does not, contact the carrier and ask specifically about conference calling, three-way calling, multi-party calling, VoLTE, and Wi‑Fi Calling support on your line.

If the second person does not answer
Wait for the call attempt to finish, or end it using the on-screen control. If the iPhone remains on a dialing or voicemail screen, end that call attempt before trying again. Return to the active call, tap More → Add People, and retry. Do not tap Merge Calls until the second call has connected.

If a participant cannot hear anyone
- Confirm that you actually tapped Merge Calls.
- Tap the audio control and select iPhone or Speaker.
- Check that the microphone is not muted.
- Disconnect Bluetooth temporarily to rule out incorrect audio routing.
- Move to an area with better cellular coverage and retry.
- End the conference and test with a different participant or location.
How many people can join?
For a standard cellular conference call, Apple’s current guide states that GSM calls can support up to five people, depending on the carrier. That wording includes the person who starts the call and should not be treated as a guaranteed limit for every carrier, plan, country, or network.
For a larger group, Group FaceTime supports up to 32 participants, subject to regional availability. It uses Wi‑Fi or cellular data rather than the carrier’s ordinary conference-call feature.
Phone conference calls versus FaceTime

To start a FaceTime audio group call, open FaceTime, tap New Call, enter people’s names, numbers, or email addresses, and tap the audio-call button. Does the iPhone model change the procedure?
No separate conference-call workflow is required for the standard, Pro, or Pro Max versions of the iPhone 15, 16, or 17 families. The Phone app and carrier service handle the call. Menu labels can change slightly with iOS releases, language, region, and call state, so the current controls may not look identical on every device.
Dual-SIM users may see a line-selection step, and some configurations may not allow calls on different lines to be merged. International support also varies by carrier and country.
