Windows 11 can show a calendar through the Widgets Board, but it does not normally keep a calendar permanently fixed to your desktop wallpaper. Press Windows + W to open the built-in Widgets Board and add Calendar where it is available. If you want a calendar that remains visible on the wallpaper, you need a dedicated desktop-calendar utility.
Choose the right calendar method

How to add the calendar to Windows 11 Widgets
- Open Widgets by pressing Windows + W. You can also select the Widgets area on the taskbar. On supported touch devices, swipe inward from the left edge.
- Select the + button or Add widgets.
- Find Calendar, then select Add or Pin, depending on the labels shown on your Windows build.
- Use the widget’s three-dot menu to resize, move, customize or remove it when those controls are available.
- Press Windows + W whenever you want to view it again.
Microsoft describes Widgets as a board or flyout that overlays the desktop. Therefore, pinning Calendar keeps it in the Widgets Board; it does not pin the calendar to your wallpaper or leave it permanently visible above other windows. Widget availability and controls can vary by Windows version, region, account and installed apps. See Microsoft’s Widgets support guide and Widgets technical documentation.
Use the taskbar calendar for a quick date check
If you only need to check a date, select the clock and date on the right side of the taskbar. Windows opens its calendar panel, where you can move between dates.

This is the fastest built-in option, but it is a date flyout—not a persistent desktop calendar or a full event agenda.

Show Outlook events in Windows 11
For meetings and appointments, open Start, search for Outlook, and sign in or add the account that contains your calendar. Then select the Calendar section in Outlook. You can pin Outlook to the taskbar for quicker access.
Microsoft’s current Outlook for Windows combines email and calendar features and supports account types including Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud. Work and school accounts may also be subject to organisation policies. The account shown in Widgets and the account synchronized by Outlook must be the ones containing your events. Microsoft’s current Outlook information is available at Outlook for Windows.
Windows 11 may open Outlook rather than a separate Calendar application. That is expected on current configurations, so older instructions that depend on a standalone Windows Calendar app may not match your PC.

Can the built-in calendar stay permanently visible?
No—not through the standard Windows 11 Widgets Board. Widgets appear when you open the board and disappear when you dismiss it. A desktop shortcut behaves similarly: it gives you fast access to Outlook or a calendar website, but it does not display the calendar itself.
To create a shortcut to Outlook, open Start, search for Outlook, right-click it and choose Open file location where that option is available. You can then copy or create its shortcut on the desktop. Browser shortcuts for Google Calendar or another web calendar vary by browser and are also launch shortcuts, not permanent widgets.
Keep a calendar permanently on the wallpaper
If “on the desktop” means visible over or alongside your wallpaper, use a purpose-built desktop-calendar application. These tools add another software and privacy dependency, so install them only from an official vendor or the Microsoft Store and review their current permissions, account support and licensing.

Outlook on the Desktop
Outlook on the Desktop is designed to place an Outlook calendar view on the Windows desktop. The vendor lists month, week and day views, adjustable size and position, opacity controls and multi-monitor support.

Microsoft Store alternatives
Calendar utilities such as Calendar Flyout and SkyCalendar are listed in the Microsoft Store. Check each current Store listing for supported features, account synchronization, permissions, advertising, in-app purchases and availability. A Store listing alone does not guarantee two-way synchronization with a work or school Microsoft 365 calendar.

What to do if Calendar is missing from Widgets
- Install pending Windows updates and restart the computer.
- Press Windows + W, reopen the widget picker and check again.
- Confirm that Widgets is using the Microsoft account associated with the calendar you want to see.
- Update or install Outlook if it is the application providing your calendar.
- Check whether the widget is available for your Windows build and region. Microsoft notes that widget features can vary by region and configuration.
- Restart Windows and check the widget picker once more.
- If you specifically need permanent visibility, stop troubleshooting the overlay and use a dedicated desktop-calendar utility instead.
What to check when events are missing
- Verify that the events exist in the account’s online calendar.
- Check that Outlook is signed in to the correct personal, work or school account.
- Wait for synchronization to finish and confirm that the relevant calendar is enabled in Outlook.
- Consider whether organisation policies restrict work or school calendar data.
- Open the full Outlook calendar to confirm the event. A small widget is intended for quick information, not as a replacement for the full calendar application.
If the widget remains incomplete but Outlook shows the correct events, use Outlook for reliable calendar management rather than treating the widget as the authoritative view.
The simplest answer
For a built-in Windows 11 calendar, press Windows + W and add Calendar from the Widgets picker. For a calendar that remains permanently visible on the wallpaper, install a compatible desktop-calendar utility—especially checking the Classic Outlook requirement before choosing Outlook on the Desktop.
