The 8849 TANK X is a rugged Android phone built around a built-in projector, not a normal smartphone with a little extra protection. Its 220-lumen DLP projector, 17,600mAh battery, autofocus night vision, field lights and measuring tools make it compelling for camping, construction, emergency work and presentations in dark environments. The trade-off is severe portability: at 750g and 31.9mm thick, it is closer to portable field equipment than an everyday pocket phone.
As checked on August 18, 2026, the official store listed the 16GB/512GB model at $669.99, down from a displayed $1,049.99 regular price. Launch coverage reported an earlier $549.99 early-bird price, so treat discounts, stock and shipping as changeable.
What is the 8849 TANK X?
The TANK X is a 5G rugged smartphone from 8849, a brand TechRadar describes as associated with Unihertz. Its defining feature is a built-in DLP projector rated for 220 lumens and up to 1920×1080 playback. It also combines a MediaTek Dimensity 8200 processor, a very large battery, night vision, a camping light, a laser rangefinder and programmable buttons.
That combination makes the TANK X best understood as a portable field presentation and entertainment device that also works as a phone. Its strongest use cases are darkened rooms, tents, field briefings, construction sites, roadside work and outdoor activities where several tools in one sealed device are useful.

Projector: useful, but not a daylight cinema
The projector supports one-touch activation, laser autofocus and keystone correction. 8849 lists an approximate focus range of 0.5–3 metres and recommends a projection distance of about 1.5–2 metres. The claimed runtime is up to five hours in high-brightness mode or six hours in night mode.
In practical terms, the projector makes the most sense in a dark room, tent or shaded area. TechRadar’s review supports usability mainly in darkened or unlit conditions. The manufacturer’s suggestion that it can work outdoors should not be interpreted as meaning that it will produce a strong image in direct daylight.
At 220 lumens, brightness falls as the image gets larger and the throw distance increases. A dedicated projector generally has better optics, cooling and sustained brightness. The TANK X’s advantage is convenience: it combines the projector, battery, cellular connection and stored files in one device.

- Best distance: roughly 1.5–2 metres, according to 8849.
- Weak point: large images and daylight quickly expose the limits of a phone-sized optical system.
- Potential setup issue: extreme angles can make autofocus and keystone correction less convincing, so use a flat surface and test the correction before an important presentation.
Do not compare the 220-lumen rating directly with a similarly rated dedicated projector without considering image size, optics and thermal limits.
Design and portability
The TANK X measures 180.5 × 91.8 × 31.9mm and weighs 750g. That is dramatically thicker and heavier than a conventional phone. It is not an unobtrusive pocket device, particularly once a case, charging cable and other equipment are added.
The weight comes with practical hardware: a large battery, projector, reinforced chassis, lighting system and field sensors. Nevertheless, this is the TANK X’s biggest everyday disadvantage. Hikers, technicians and responders carrying equipment on foot should compare the total weight of the phone against the weight of a lighter phone plus a separate tool or pico projector.
Battery and charging
The non-removable battery is rated at 17,600mAh, listed as two 8,800mAh/68.11Wh cells. Wired charging is rated at 120W, and USB-C supports reverse wired charging for other devices.

That capacity is useful for long shifts, navigation, media playback and emergency backup power. 8849 claims up to a week of daily use, but that is a manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed result. Projector use, 5G, GPS, maximum screen brightness, the 120Hz display, infrared illumination and the 1,200-lumen camping light can all reduce endurance substantially.
Do not charge the phone while it is wet. Charging may slow or stop if the device is wet, too hot or too cold, or if an incompatible charger is being used. The sealed design helps field durability but makes battery replacement and internal repair more complicated.
Performance and software
The Dimensity 8200 is a capable 4nm mid-range platform with an octa-core CPU reaching 3.1GHz and a Mali-G610 GPU. The phone pairs it with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, with microSD/TF expansion listed up to 2TB.
That should be sufficient for everyday apps, navigation, projection, photography, multitasking and moderate gaming. It is not a current premium flagship processor, and the large RAM figure does not change that distinction.

8849’s current online product page lists Android 16, while the launch-era specification sheet and TechRadar’s April 6, 2026 review identify Android 15. Buyers should verify the installed Android version and update policy with the seller before ordering. The discrepancy also makes long-term software support an important unanswered buying question.
Cameras and night vision
The rear system includes a 50MP Sony IMX766 main camera, a 64MP OmniVision OV64B1B night-vision camera, four infrared fill lights and an 8MP autofocus telephoto with 3× optical zoom. The front camera is a 50MP fixed-focus unit.
The most distinctive camera feature is autofocus infrared night vision. TechRadar identifies that as an advantage over fixed-focus night-vision cameras, particularly for wildlife observation, low-light navigation and surveillance-like field tasks. The main camera sensor is capable hardware, but sensor resolution alone does not guarantee flagship image processing, stabilization or a polished camera app.

Display
The phone has a 6.78-inch LCD with 1080×2460 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and a stated peak brightness of 750 nits. That is separate from the projector: the LCD may be useful in ordinary outdoor viewing, while the projector needs a suitable surface and controlled lighting.
Rugged protection
8849 lists IP68 and IP69K protection and specifies static fresh-water testing to 1.8 metres for up to 30 minutes. Those are controlled test conditions, not a guarantee that the phone is indestructible or safe in every wet environment.
Seawater, pool water, soap, hot water, impact damage, worn seals and uncovered ports can reduce protection. Drop survival depends on the impact angle, surface and condition of the device. Use the original case, keep port covers closed and remember that water and dust resistance can diminish over time.
Field tools and controls

- Infrared remote-control port.
- 1,200-lumen camping light.
- Red/blue warning lights and alert sounds.
- 4m laser rangefinder.
- Compass, barometer, gyroscope and accelerometer.
- Built-in toolbox utilities.
- 3.5mm headphone jack and USB-C 2.0.
These features can be valuable in construction, roadside work, camping and field inspection. USB-C 2.0 is a notable limitation: large wired file transfers will be slower than buyers may expect from a modern USB-C phone, making Wi-Fi or cloud transfer preferable for large videos.

The listed radios include 5G bands n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n20, n25, n28, n38, n40, n41, n66, n77 and n78, plus LTE bands including 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 28 and 66. Other features include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, NFC, FM radio and dual nano-SIM support.

Those bands do not guarantee universal U.S. service. VoLTE, carrier certification, 5G operation, emergency calling, firmware and Google-service availability vary by country, carrier and regional model. Check compatibility with the exact carrier before buying.
NFC documentation is also inconsistent: the specification sheet includes a “not support pay” note, while the current product page describes NFC as read/write and card mode. Do not assume Google Pay or tap-to-pay will work on every regional unit.

The official listing checked on August 18, 2026 showed the 16GB/512GB TANK X at $669.99, with a displayed regular price of $1,049.99. The earlier launch price was reported as $549.99 for early buyers. Store promotions, regional taxes, shipping, warranty terms and stock can change, so verify all of them at checkout.

On the official listings referenced in the dossier, the TANK 4 Pro started around $689.99 and the TANK 3 Pro category listing showed prices from approximately $579; these are time-sensitive store prices, not permanent recommended prices.
Who should buy the TANK X?
Buy it if you specifically need a phone-integrated projector, autofocus night vision, a huge battery or field tools such as a light, rangefinder and programmable keys. It is a strong fit for dark-room presentations, camping, outdoor work and emergency backup use—provided you accept the weight.
Avoid it if you want a conventional daily-carry phone, a bright daylight projector, wireless charging, a current flagship processor, guaranteed U.S. carrier support or a lightweight camera phone. A lighter rugged phone paired with a separate pico projector may be more practical if projection is occasional rather than central.
Verdict
The 8849 TANK X is unusually purposeful. Its projector is genuinely useful in dark or shaded settings, and the battery, night vision, rugged construction and field tools solve problems that ordinary phones do not. But the 750g weight and 31.9mm thickness are not minor drawbacks; they define the ownership experience.
Choose it as a projector-first field device, not as a normal smartphone. Before ordering, verify the Android version, carrier compatibility, payment support, warranty, return terms and the current price.
