USB-C는 커넥터 모양일 뿐, 속도나 기능을 보장하는 규격이 아닙니다. 같은 USB-C 포트라도 USB 2.0부터 USB 40Gbps, USB4, 썬더볼트 5까지 성능이 크게 다를 수 있습니다.
USB 2.0·USB 3.2·USB4는 USB 데이터 규격이고, 썬더볼트는 USB-C 커넥터를 사용하는 별도의 고성능 연결 기술입니다. 실제 성능은 노트북 포트, 케이블, 주변기기 중 가장 낮은 규격에 맞춰집니다.
USB-C와 USB는 다르다
USB-C는 앞뒤 구분 없이 연결하는 물리적 커넥터의 이름입니다. USB-C 포트와 케이블을 통해 데이터 전송, 충전, 영상 출력, USB4, 썬더볼트 등을 사용할 수 있지만, USB-C라는 표시만으로 어떤 기능을 지원하는지는 알 수 없습니다.

USB 종류별 속도 비교
아래 수치는 순수 파일 복사 속도가 아니라 이론상 링크 속도입니다. 실제 속도는 프로토콜 오버헤드, SSD 성능, 발열, 파일 종류, 허브의 대역폭 공유 때문에 더 낮습니다.

속도 표기는 세대명보다 숫자로 확인하는 편이 안전합니다. 제조사가 단순히 ‘USB 3.2’라고만 적었다면 Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 2×2 중 무엇인지 알 수 없으므로 5Gbps·10Gbps·20Gbps 같은 구체적인 표기를 확인해야 합니다.
USB4 Version 2.0은 80Gbps 링크를 정의하지만, 사양이 존재한다는 사실이 모든 노트북·케이블·독이 80Gbps를 지원한다는 의미는 아닙니다. 최신 문서는 USB-IF 문서 목록에서 확인할 수 있습니다.
속도를 바이트 단위로 환산하면

Gbps는 기가비트, GB/s는 기가바이트입니다. 8비트가 1바이트이므로 숫자를 단순히 8로 나눌 수 있지만, 실제 전송에서는 오버헤드와 장치 성능이 반영됩니다.

USB4와 썬더볼트 4의 차이
USB4 40Gbps와 썬더볼트 4는 최대 링크 속도가 같을 수 있습니다. 차이는 속도 숫자보다 최소 기능과 인증 요건에 있습니다.
썬더볼트 4는 PC 측 40Gbps 속도, 최소 32Gbps PCIe 데이터 전송, 듀얼 4K 디스플레이, PC 충전, 인증과 케이블 품질 검증 등을 요구합니다. 반면 USB4는 제품에 따라 선택 기능과 최소 성능이 다를 수 있습니다.

USB-C 포트가 영상 출력을 지원하려면 DisplayPort Alt Mode, USB4를 통한 DisplayPort 터널링, 또는 썬더볼트의 DisplayPort 지원이 필요합니다. USB-C 모양이라고 해서 모두 모니터를 연결할 수 있는 것은 아닙니다.
모니터 연결 전 노트북과 모니터 사양에서 다음 문구를 확인해야 합니다.
- DisplayPort Alt Mode
- USB4 DisplayPort tunneling
- Thunderbolt 3·4·5
- 지원 해상도와 주사율
- 모니터의 USB Power Delivery 출력
애플 역시 Mac의 USB-C·썬더볼트 포트에서 디스플레이를 연결할 때 DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3 또는 Thunderbolt 4 호환 여부를 확인하도록 안내합니다. Apple Mac의 Thunderbolt·USB-C 포트 안내
충전 속도는 데이터 속도와 별개다
USB-C 케이블의 데이터 속도와 충전 전력은 서로 다른 항목입니다. 노트북 충전 능력은 다음 요소가 함께 결정합니다.

따라서 ‘100W 케이블’이라고 해서 모든 노트북을 100W로 충전하는 것은 아닙니다. 노트북과 충전기가 각각 그 전력을 지원하고 PD 협상이 이뤄져야 합니다.

충전과 일반 주변기기
스마트폰 충전이나 키보드·마우스 연결만 필요하다면 썬더볼트 케이블은 과할 수 있습니다. 충전 전력과 기본 내구성을 우선하고, 데이터를 전송할 예정이라면 최소 USB 5Gbps 또는 10Gbps 표기를 확인하세요.
외장 SSD
- 사진·문서 백업: USB 5Gbps 또는 10Gbps
- 고성능 NVMe SSD: USB 20Gbps 이상
- 대용량 영상 작업: USB4 40Gbps 또는 Thunderbolt 4·5
SSD, 외장 케이스의 브리지 칩, 노트북 포트, 케이블이 모두 같은 속도를 지원해야 합니다. USB4라고 적혀 있어도 20Gbps 제품일 수 있습니다.

USB-C 허브와 썬더볼트 독의 차이

노트북 포트가 일반 USB-C라면 비싼 썬더볼트 독을 연결해도 기능이 제한됩니다.
포트와 케이블 확인 방법
- 포트 옆의 번개, USB 로고, 숫자, 충전 아이콘을 확인합니다.
- 제조사 사양표에서 포트별로 USB 10Gbps, USB4 40Gbps, Thunderbolt 4 같은 정확한 표기를 찾습니다.
- 케이블 포장에서 USB 5·10·20·40·80Gbps 또는 Thunderbolt 세대 숫자를 확인합니다.
- 충전 케이블이라면 지원 와트와 USB PD 여부를 확인합니다.
- 영상이 필요하다면 DisplayPort Alt Mode와 지원 해상도·주사율을 확인합니다.
번개 아이콘은 썬더볼트 가능성을 보여주지만, 정확한 세대는 숫자와 제품 사양으로 확인해야 합니다. USB-C 포트가 여러 개 있는 노트북은 포트마다 기능이 다를 수 있습니다.
자주 발생하는 문제와 해결 방법
충전은 되지만 데이터 전송이 안 될 때
충전 전용 케이블이거나 케이블의 데이터선이 USB 2.0 수준일 수 있습니다. 다른 USB 5Gbps 이상 케이블을 사용하고, 해당 포트가 데이터 기능을 지원하는지 확인하세요.

외장 SSD가 기대보다 느릴 때
SSD 자체 속도, 외장 케이스의 브리지 칩, 노트북 포트, 케이블, 허브 연결 여부를 순서대로 확인하세요. 허브에 SSD와 랜 포트 등 여러 장치를 연결하면 대역폭을 공유할 수 있습니다.
썬더볼트 케이블인데 속도가 낮을 때
노트북 포트가 일반 USB-C이거나 주변기기가 낮은 USB 규격일 수 있습니다. 또한 독 내부에서 여러 장치가 대역폭을 나눌 수 있습니다. 케이블만 교체해도 호스트와 주변기기의 한계가 올라가지는 않습니다.
USB4 장치가 Thunderbolt 3 장치와 작동하지 않을 때
USB4와 Thunderbolt 3의 호환은 제품 구현과 지원 범위에 따라 달라질 수 있습니다. USB-IF는 별도의 Thunderbolt 3 호환 요구사항을 정의하고 있으므로, USB4라는 표기만으로 모든 Thunderbolt 장치와의 완전한 호환을 가정해서는 안 됩니다. USB-IF USB4 Thunderbolt 3 호환 요구사항

The Bottom Line
USB-C라는 모양보다 필요한 기능과 Gbps 표기를 먼저 확인하세요. 일반 충전과 주변기기에는 USB 5Gbps·10Gbps면 충분한 경우가 많고, 빠른 외장 SSD에는 USB 20Gbps 또는 USB4 40Gbps가 적합합니다. 다중 모니터와 고속 도킹에는 Thunderbolt 4, 고성능 영상·스토리지 작업에는 Thunderbolt 5를 검토하면 됩니다. 단, 포트·케이블·기기 중 하나라도 낮은 규격이면 전체 연결 성능도 낮아집니다.
