The best gaming-router setup is not a single “Game Mode” switch. For most homes, the winning combination is a wired connection, current firmware, controlled queueing with Smart Queue Management (SQM) when congestion causes lag, and carefully configured NAT. Start by measuring latency when the connection is idle and busy, then change one setting at a time.
First, find out whether the router is the problem
Gaming performance depends on more than download speed:
- Ping (round-trip latency): The time traffic takes to reach a server and return.
- Jitter: Variation in ping between packets.
- Packet loss: Packets that fail to arrive, causing interruptions or retransmissions.
- Bandwidth: The amount of data the connection can transfer.
- Bufferbloat: Extra latency caused by full queues during downloads or uploads.
- NAT type: How easily the device can establish connections with other players and gaming services.
A faster internet plan may increase throughput without reducing baseline ping or latency under load. The Bufferbloat project recommends comparing idle and loaded latency because queueing can make a fast connection feel unresponsive.
Record a baseline
- Test the gaming device while nobody else is using the connection.
- Run another test while a different device downloads a large file.
- Repeat while another device uploads a file or performs a cloud backup.
- Record ping, jitter, packet loss, download speed, upload speed, and the console’s NAT status.
- Compare Ethernet with Wi-Fi if possible.
You can use the Waveform Bufferbloat Test, Cloudflare Speed Test, or Speedtest. A loaded-latency result around 15–25 ms is described by Bufferbloat.net as an indication that bufferbloat is controlled, not as a universal gaming requirement.

Also check the game publisher’s service-status page. High ping in one game may be caused by server distance, routing, or an overloaded game server—problems a home router cannot fix.
Connect the gaming device correctly
Use Ethernet whenever practical
Connect the PC or console directly to the primary router or to a wired mesh node. If you need more ports, connect a network switch to a LAN port on the router, then connect the gaming device to the switch. Do not connect the switch to the router’s WAN/Internet port.
A working Cat5e-or-better cable is sufficient for ordinary gigabit Ethernet. Check that the device and router negotiate the expected link speed. Powerline networking can be useful in some homes, but replace it with Ethernet or test another solution if it introduces packet loss or unstable latency.
A dedicated “gaming” LAN port is not automatically faster. Some manufacturers use it to prioritize traffic; others provide it mainly as a configuration convenience. For example, ASUS describes a dedicated gaming port and device-prioritization features on the RT-AX86U Pro, but those features are vendor-specific.
If Wi-Fi is unavoidable
- Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz when the device is nearby and the signal is strong.
- Use 2.4 GHz primarily for range and compatibility.
- Place the router in an open, elevated location rather than inside furniture.
- Keep it away from metal, thick masonry, appliances, and electronics.
- Prefer wired backhaul between mesh nodes.
- Avoid wireless extenders when a wired access point is possible.
- Do not use a guest network with client isolation for the gaming device.
Distance, walls, floors, metal, competing networks, and electronic interference can all affect wireless performance, as explained in Steam’s wireless networking guidance.

- Beyond-fast WiFi 7 (802.11be) with new 320MHz channels in the 6 GHz band and 4096-QAM significantly increases network capacity and throughput, with speeds of up to 30 Gbps
- Multi-link Operation links to multiple bands at the same time to ensure stable internet connections and efficient data transfers
- Cutting-edge external dual-feeding antennas boost coverage by providing high efficiency and significantly enhanced signal strength
- Maximized wired connectivity and flexibility with dual 10G ports and quad 2.5G ports
- Triple-Level Game Acceleration - The GT-BE98 Pro boosts your PC gaming traffic every step of the way, from your PC gaming port all the way to the game server.
Wi-Fi 6, 6E, and 7 can improve efficiency and capacity, but they do not overcome a weak signal, ISP congestion, or a distant server. The client must also support the relevant generation and band. Avoid assuming that 160 MHz channels are best: wider channels can improve throughput in clean spectrum but may be less reliable in congested areas.
Complete the safe router setup
Menu names differ by manufacturer and firmware version. The usual process is:
- Connect to the home network.
- Open the router’s app or administration page. Common gateway addresses include
192.168.1.1, but the correct address varies; router documentation may also list alternatives such as192.168.254.254. - Sign in with the administrator account.
- Change the default administrator password to a unique password.
- Install the latest stable firmware.
- Confirm that the WAN/Internet connection works.
- Set a strong Wi-Fi password and use WPA2-AES or WPA3 where supported.
- Disable internet-facing remote administration unless you specifically need it.
- Export a configuration backup or photograph important settings.
- Reboot only when the router requests it.
Bungie’s router guidance also uses common private gateway addresses as examples and recommends consulting the router manual for the actual address.
Reduce lag caused by household traffic
When to use SQM
If gaming becomes laggy whenever someone downloads, streams, or uploads, the likely problem is congestion and bufferbloat. Smart Queue Management actively controls queues using algorithms such as CAKE or FQ-CoDel. It is generally more useful for loaded latency than a simple “gaming priority” toggle.
- Disable QoS or SQM and measure your realistic maximum download and upload speeds.
- Enable SQM in the router’s traffic-shaping or QoS section.
- Enter conservative shaping rates slightly below the measured speeds.
- Test loaded latency again while downloading and uploading separately.
- Increase the rates gradually until you find the best balance between throughput and latency.
- Repeat the test at different times and after any ISP or modem change.
See the Bufferbloat project’s SQM guidance for the measure-and-tune approach.

SQM deliberately shapes traffic below the line rate, so maximum throughput may fall. It may also overwhelm a weak router on a high-speed or multi-gigabit plan. Disable or reduce SQM if it causes CPU saturation, packet loss, Wi-Fi instability, unexpectedly low throughput, or higher idle latency.

Conventional QoS may prioritize a device, application, game, or traffic class. However, implementations vary. A “gaming priority” setting may reorder packets without controlling queue growth at the internet link. ASUS describes Game Boost as adaptive QoS that prioritizes game traffic, but also notes that menus and behavior can differ by product and software version. Use it only if testing shows a real improvement.
Fix NAT without unnecessarily exposing the network
Use this order
- Check the current NAT status in the game or platform settings.
- Make sure only one device is acting as the router where possible.
- On a current, trusted router, enable UPnP and restart the game.
- If multiplayer still fails, disable UPnP before trying manual forwarding.
- Create a DHCP reservation for the gaming device.
- Forward only the ports documented by the platform or game publisher.
- Test matchmaking, voice chat, and NAT again.
UPnP is convenient because games can request mappings automatically, but it grants devices on the home network the ability to create port mappings. Keep the router updated and use UPnP only on a trusted home network. Bungie recommends UPnP where possible, warns against enabling UPnP and manual port forwarding together, and explains the security trade-off in its NAT troubleshooting documentation.
What NAT labels mean
Terminology differs by platform and game. Xbox and PC services often use Open, Moderate, or Strict. PlayStation commonly uses Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3. PlayStation Type 2 is normally expected for a device behind a home router; Type 1 generally indicates a direct connection, while Type 3 is more restrictive. “Open” and “Type 1” are not universal technical equivalents.
Manual port forwarding
- Find the official port list for the exact game and platform.
- Reserve the device’s private LAN address through DHCP.
- Open the router’s Port Forwarding section.
- Create only the documented TCP and UDP rules.
- Point every rule to the reserved address.
- Save, reboot only if required, and restart the game.
- Remove obsolete rules when the device or platform changes.
Port forwarding affects inbound reachability and matchmaking compatibility; it does not lower ordinary ping to a game server. Never use a generic port list as a substitute for the game publisher’s instructions.

- Powerful processor; 1.8 GHz quad core processor delivers ultra fast and reliable connections
- Mystic light; sync RGB light effects with mystic light compatible products
- Game accelerator; provides an uninterrupted WiFi connection for immersive gaming experiences
For example, Bungie lists Destiny-specific rules including Xbox Series X|S TCP 3074 and UDP 88, 500, 3074, 3544, and 4500; PlayStation 5 TCP 1935 and 3478–3480 plus UDP 3074 and 3478–3479; and PC UDP 3074 and 3097. These are not universal gaming requirements. Microsoft’s Xbox networking documentation provides a separate Xbox Live port example at Microsoft Support.
Do not forward one single-instance port to multiple consoles, and do not put a console or PC in the DMZ as a casual NAT fix. Opening ports expands the network’s exposure, so keep rules narrow and documented.
Check for double NAT and CGNAT
Double NAT means two routers are translating traffic. It can cause strict NAT and make port forwarding fail. If your ISP gateway and personal router both provide routing, either:
- Put the ISP gateway into bridge mode or vendor-specific IP passthrough, then let your router handle routing; or
- Put the personal router into access-point mode so only the ISP gateway routes.
Compare the router’s WAN address with the public address shown by an external service. If the WAN address is private or belongs to a carrier-grade address range, your ISP may use CGNAT. Port forwarding on your home router may not work because it does not have a directly reachable public IPv4 address. Ask the ISP about a public IPv4 address or its supported alternative. IPv6 can change connectivity behavior, but enabling it is not a guaranteed fix for every game.

DNS resolves names to IP addresses. Changing DNS may affect lookup speed, filtering, reliability, or privacy, but it generally does not reduce latency after the game has selected a server. There is no universally fastest DNS service: results depend on geography, ISP routing, caching, and the service being resolved.
Best Value
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
If testing DNS, change only that setting and compare login, matchmaking, and repeated connection behavior. VPNs and route-optimization services are also experiments, not guaranteed upgrades. They may improve a specific route or avoid a bad ISP path, but can add latency, overhead, or instability.
Verify every change
- Test the device at idle.
- Test while another device downloads.
- Test while another device uploads.
- Play the same game or use the same service under comparable conditions.
- Record ping, jitter, packet loss, NAT status, matchmaking, voice chat, and disconnects.
- Change one router setting.
- Repeat the same tests.
- Keep the change only if it improves the actual problem.
A fast speed test with poor loaded latency is not a successful gaming setup. Conversely, a lower download speed can be a worthwhile trade if it keeps latency stable while the household connection is busy.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Lag only during downloads or uploads | Enable and tune SQM, or test the router’s QoS implementation. Do not assume a faster plan will cure queueing. |
| Wi-Fi spikes or disconnects | Test Ethernet, move the router, try 5/6 GHz, test another channel, and remove wireless extender hops. |
| Strict NAT | Check double NAT and CGNAT, then try UPnP or documented forwarding. Avoid DMZ first. |
| Port forwarding does nothing | Verify the reserved IP, protocol, WAN address, CGNAT status, upstream router, and current game ports. |
| UPnP behaves inconsistently | Update firmware, clear stale mappings if possible, restart devices, or disable UPnP and use documented forwarding for one device. |
| Several consoles conflict | UPnP may handle multiple devices better than forwarding one platform port to all of them. |
| High ping in only one game | Check the game’s server region, routing, and service status. |
| Internet stops after a change | Undo the last setting, reconnect locally, and reboot modem/router in the manufacturer’s recommended order. Restore a backup; factory-reset only when necessary. |
Incorrect router changes can cause loss of internet access or lock you out of administration. Keep a backup and know the ISP requirements before resetting; Bungie documents this risk in its advanced networking guide.

When replacing the router makes sense
Replace the router because it has a real limitation, not because it carries a gaming label. A new device is justified when the current unit:
- No longer receives security updates.
- Cannot provide stable coverage where you play.
- Lacks the Ethernet or Wi-Fi capacity your network needs.
- Cannot control bufferbloat at your connection speed.
- Crashes or introduces packet loss.
- Lacks a required feature such as SQM, VLANs, bridge-mode compatibility, or wired mesh backhaul.
Consumer gaming routers such as the ASUS RT-AX86U Pro can suit users who want device prioritization and a gaming-focused interface. A mainstream Wi-Fi 6 model such as the TP-Link Archer AX73 may be sufficient for ordinary coverage and networking controls, but should not be treated as a guaranteed SQM solution.
Advanced users may prefer an OpenWrt-compatible router with the project’s SQM support. Verify hardware support, firmware details, and expected throughput before installing. The GL.iNet Flint 2 is aimed at technically inclined users. A Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra is a gateway/controller rather than a one-box Wi-Fi router and generally requires separate UniFi access points.
