Pre-CES 2025 leaks correctly pointed to Nvidia’s Blackwell-based GeForce RTX 50 Series, GDDR7 memory, a 32GB RTX 5090, a 16GB RTX 5080, and a two-stage launch. Nvidia confirmed the core details at its January 6, 2025 CES keynote, although leaked partner-card prices and “2X faster” performance claims needed important qualifications.
What leaked before Nvidia’s CES 2025 announcement?
The leak cycle focused on four desktop GPUs: the GeForce RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070. Reports also suggested that Nvidia would introduce them under the Blackwell architecture, replace GDDR6X with GDDR7 memory, launch the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 first, and follow with the lower-tier cards.
Much of that direction proved accurate. Nvidia officially unveiled the desktop RTX 50 Series on January 6, 2025. The RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 became available on January 30, while the RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070 were announced for February.
Pre-launch reports also highlighted a new DLSS generation and stronger AI-rendering capabilities. Nvidia confirmed DLSS 4, including Multi Frame Generation, as a central RTX 50 Series feature.

RTX 50 Series specifications: leaked expectations versus confirmed facts
The most consequential leaks concerned memory capacity and the launch hierarchy. Nvidia’s official specification comparison later confirmed the following desktop configurations:
| GPU | CUDA cores | Memory | Bus | Bandwidth | Launch price | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 | 21,760 | 32GB GDDR7 | 512-bit | 1,792GB/s | $1,999 | January 30, 2025 |
| RTX 5080 | 10,752 | 16GB GDDR7 | 256-bit | 960GB/s | $999 | January 30, 2025 |
| RTX 5070 Ti | 8,960 | 16GB GDDR7 | 256-bit | 896GB/s | $749 | February 2025 |
| RTX 5070 | 6,144 | 12GB GDDR7 | 192-bit | 672GB/s | $549 | February 2025 |
These figures come from Nvidia’s official RTX graphics-card comparison. The RTX 5090 also includes 680 fifth-generation Tensor Cores and 170 fourth-generation Ray Tracing Cores.
RTX 5090: the flagship leak that largely held up
The RTX 5090 was expected to be Nvidia’s new flagship, and the most notable pre-launch claim was its 32GB memory capacity. That was confirmed. The card uses 32GB of GDDR7 across a 512-bit memory interface and provides 1,792GB/s of reported bandwidth.
Nvidia set the starting price at $1,999 and announced January 30, 2025 availability. That was a starting price for Nvidia’s offering, not a guarantee that every board-partner card would sell for the same amount.
Nvidia also described the Founders Edition as a two-slot, 304mm-long card with a double-flow-through cooler and a three-piece PCB. Buyers considering a custom model still need to check its individual dimensions, thickness, power requirements and connector arrangement.
The RTX 5090 is aimed at demanding 4K gaming, heavy ray tracing, professional rendering and local AI workloads. It is a poor fit for most 1440p systems, particularly those limited by an older CPU, modest display or insufficient power supply.

RTX 5080: 16GB GDDR7 and a $999 starting price
Leaks pointing to a 16GB RTX 5080 were also accurate. The card has 10,752 CUDA cores, 16GB of GDDR7, a 256-bit memory bus and 960GB/s of bandwidth.
Nvidia announced a $999 starting price and January 30, 2025 availability. The RTX 5080 targets high-end 4K gaming and creative workloads without reaching the RTX 5090’s price or memory capacity.
Its 16GB capacity is a significant step below the RTX 5090’s 32GB, so buyers working with unusually large local AI models, high-resolution assets or demanding professional scenes should not judge the cards by bandwidth alone. Actual suitability depends on the application and its memory requirements.
RTX 5070 Ti and RTX 5070
The leaked lower-tier lineup also materialized. Nvidia priced the RTX 5070 Ti from $749 and the RTX 5070 from $549, with both scheduled for February 2025 availability.
The RTX 5070 Ti combines 8,960 CUDA cores with 16GB of GDDR7, a 256-bit bus and 896GB/s of bandwidth. It is positioned for high-refresh 1440p gaming and more accessible 4K gaming. Unlike the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080, Nvidia’s initial announcement did not include a Founders Edition model for the RTX 5070 Ti, making board-partner pricing and designs especially important.

The 12GB capacity is a potential limitation for some future high-resolution games and creator workloads. Nvidia later described the RTX 5070’s traditional raster improvement over the RTX 4070 as approximately 20%, while its larger headline gain depended on DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation.
Why DLSS 4 changed the performance story
Nvidia claimed up to twice the performance of the previous generation for each of the announced desktop cards in selected games and workloads. Those comparisons often included DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation, so they should not be interpreted as universal native-rendering gains.
Multi Frame Generation can create up to three additional frames for each traditionally rendered frame. Nvidia said this could produce as much as an 8X frame-rate increase over brute-force rendering in certain demonstrations. However, generated frames are not equivalent to fully rendered frames.
Multi Frame Generation can increase the number shown on an FPS counter, but the underlying rendered-frame rate, input latency, image quality and frame-time consistency still matter. It requires compatible games and software and works best when the GPU is already producing a sufficiently strong baseline frame rate.
A fair RTX 50 Series comparison should therefore report separate results for:
- Traditional rasterization.
- Ray tracing.
- DLSS Super Resolution.
- Single-frame generation.
- Multi Frame Generation.
- AI, rendering and creator workloads.
Nvidia’s launch charts should be described as Nvidia’s claims unless independently tested. “Up to 2X” is not a promise that every game will run twice as fast.

Which leaks were reliable?
The strongest claims were the architecture, product family, GDDR7 memory, RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 launch order, 32GB RTX 5090 capacity and 16GB RTX 5080 capacity. These were supported by multiple pre-launch reports or later confirmed by Nvidia.

Notebookcheck’s January 2025 archive recorded reports of custom RTX 5090 cards priced as high as $2,799 and RTX 5080 models reaching $1,899. Those figures described specific partner cards, not Nvidia’s official $1,999 and $999 starting prices.
Exact inventory, launch-day availability, power limits, cooler sizes, PCB layouts and synthetic benchmark results were less certain before launch. A retailer listing or anonymous benchmark screenshot could suggest a possibility, but it could not establish the performance or availability of the entire product range.
Rumors about models not included in Nvidia’s initial CES announcement, including early RTX 5060 specifications, should not be treated as confirmed by the January launch event.

What buyers should check
- Price: Nvidia’s figures were launch starting prices, not guaranteed current retail prices. Check the official buying hub and the exact retailer listing.
- Case clearance: Confirm card length, height and thickness, especially for partner models.
- Power: Verify the PSU capacity, connector or supplied adapter and the requirements of the specific card.
- Airflow: High-end cards can require strong case ventilation.
- CPU balance: A flagship GPU may deliver little benefit at 1080p or high refresh rates if the processor is the bottleneck.
- VRAM: Choose capacity based on games and applications, not bandwidth alone.
- Display: Match the GPU to the monitor’s resolution and refresh rate.
Should RTX 40 Series owners wait?
There is no single answer. RTX 40 Series owners with adequate 1440p or 4K performance may gain less from an upgrade than users coming from RTX 20 or RTX 30 cards, particularly if their games do not support the newest AI features.
A new 4K buyer who wants maximum ray-tracing performance or local AI capacity has a stronger reason to consider the RTX 5090. The RTX 5080 is the more conventional high-end alternative, while the RTX 5070 Ti offers 16GB of memory at a lower starting price. The RTX 5070 is more naturally suited to 1440p and becomes more compelling when its supported games benefit from DLSS 4.
Previous-generation RTX 40 Series cards can still make sense when discounted. They do not offer the complete RTX 50 Series feature set, especially DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, but a lower street price may outweigh the newer features for buyers prioritizing traditional rendering.

The pre-CES 2025 leaks were directionally strong. They correctly anticipated Nvidia’s Blackwell GeForce lineup, GDDR7 memory, the 32GB RTX 5090, the 16GB RTX 5080, the launch sequence and the importance of a new DLSS generation.
They were less dependable when they moved from product identity to exact partner-card prices, supply, power details and performance. The RTX 50 Series story is not simply “twice the performance”: its biggest advertised gains combine new hardware with DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation. Buyers should compare native results, AI-assisted results, real street prices and complete system requirements before upgrading.
