If you want to learn Java, write Java programs, or use tools such as IntelliJ IDEA, Maven, or Gradle, download a JDK—not just a runtime. For a general-purpose setup, Oracle lists JDK 25 as the latest Long-Term Support release and JDK 26 as the latest feature release as of August 18, 2026. Choose JDK 25 unless your course or application requires another major version.
What is Java?
Java is both a programming language and a software platform. Java source code is compiled into bytecode, which runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM).
- JVM: Runs compiled Java bytecode.
- JRE: Provides what is primarily needed to run Java applications.
- JDK: Includes the runtime plus development tools such as
javac, the Java compiler.
Windows 11 does not normally include Java by default, so you need to install a JDK or runtime separately.
Do you need the JDK or JRE?

Oracle also warns that installing a JRE does not necessarily update command-line Java links or add Java to PATH. For programming, the full JDK is the safer choice.

Which Java version should you choose?
As of August 18, 2026, Oracle’s download page lists:
- JDK 25: The current LTS release and the best default for most new setups.
- JDK 26: The latest Java SE feature release, appropriate when a project specifically requires it or you want the newest features.
- JDK 21: The previous LTS release and still widely supported by courses and tools.
Always follow a project’s required major version. A project targeting Java 8, 11, 17, 21, or 26 may not work correctly with a different version. Patch numbers and installer filenames change, so select the current installer shown on the official download page rather than searching for a hard-coded filename.
Choose a JDK distribution
Java is available from several legitimate distributions. The Java language is the same, but vendors can differ in packaging, support, update policies, and licensing.

Choose Oracle JDK when Oracle compatibility, documentation, or organizational policy matters. Oracle’s licensing depends on the release, date, and use case; do not assume that every Oracle JDK release has identical terms. Review the applicable Oracle license terms.
Microsoft Build of OpenJDK
Microsoft Build of OpenJDK is a free, Microsoft-supported OpenJDK distribution with Windows x64 and ARM64 availability. It is a practical choice for many Windows users.

Eclipse Temurin
Eclipse Temurin is a widely used OpenJDK distribution. Download it from the official Adoptium releases page and select the required Java version and Windows architecture.
Check whether Windows 11 is x64 or ARM64
- Press Windows + I.
- Open System > About.
- Look under Device specifications for System type.
Most Intel- and AMD-based computers use x64. Windows-on-Arm computers use ARM64. Choose a native ARM64 build when the selected vendor provides one. Oracle’s download listings prominently provide Windows x64 installers, while Microsoft documents x64 and ARM64 availability for its own build.
How to download and install Oracle JDK on Windows 11
The following is the graphical installation path using Oracle JDK. The labels and filenames may change as releases are updated.
- Open the official Oracle Java downloads page.
- Select JDK 25 for the LTS recommendation, or JDK 26 if your project requires it.
- Find the Windows section.
- Choose x64 Installer (.exe) for a typical Intel or AMD PC. The x64 MSI Installer (.msi) is mainly useful for managed or enterprise deployment.
- Download only from the official Oracle domain.
- Open the downloaded
.exefile. - Approve the Windows administrator prompt. System-wide installation requires administrator privileges.
- Follow the installer prompts. Unless you have a specific reason to change it, keep the default destination.
- Finish the installation.
Oracle’s documented default pattern is similar to:
C:Program FilesJavajdk-<FEATURE>For example, JDK 25 may be installed under C:Program FilesJavajdk-25. The exact folder can vary by release and installer, so check the real directory before configuring JAVA_HOME.

Verify that Java works
Close existing Command Prompt or PowerShell windows, then open a new one. Run:
java -version
javac -version
where.exe java
where.exe javacjava -version confirms that a Java runtime is available. javac -version confirms that the compiler—and therefore the development portion of the JDK—is available. The where.exe commands show which Java executables Windows is actually using.
A successful java command alone does not prove that the complete JDK is configured.
Configure JAVA_HOME when needed
Many development tools expect JAVA_HOME to identify the JDK installation. It should point to the JDK’s root directory, not its bin folder.
Correct:
JAVA_HOME=C:Program FilesJavajdk-25Incorrect:
JAVA_HOME=C:Program FilesJavajdk-25binWindows 11 graphical steps
- Open Start and search for environment variables.
- Select Edit the system environment variables.
- In System Properties, click Environment Variables.
- Under System variables, click New.
- Set the variable name to
JAVA_HOME. - Set the value to the actual JDK folder, such as
C:Program FilesJavajdk-25. - Under System variables, select
Pathand click Edit. - Add
%JAVA_HOME%bin. - Click OK through all dialogs.
- Open a new terminal and run the following commands.
echo $env:JAVA_HOME
java -version
javac -versionManual PATH editing is not always necessary. An Oracle installer may provide launchers through C:Program FilesCommon FilesOracleJavajavapath. Configure JAVA_HOME when a development tool requires it or when command resolution is incorrect.

javac -versionThese package identifiers target Java 21 in Microsoft’s documented examples. Confirm the available identifier and your project’s required major version before installing a different release.

“Java is not recognized”
Common causes include Java not being installed, an old terminal session, or a missing or conflicting PATH entry.
- Close and reopen PowerShell or Command Prompt.
- Confirm the JDK folder exists in File Explorer.
- Run
where.exe javaandwhere.exe javac. - Set
JAVA_HOMEto the JDK root folder. - Add
%JAVA_HOME%bintoPath. - Open another new terminal and repeat the version checks.
java works but javac does not
This usually means that only a runtime was installed, Path points to an incomplete or older installation, or multiple Java installations are conflicting. Install a JDK and inspect where.exe javac.
The wrong Java version appears
Run:
where.exe java
where.exe javac
java -versionCompare the displayed paths. Remove obsolete Java entries from Path, or place the intended JDK’s bin entry earlier in the relevant Path. Avoid manually deleting registry keys.

An application reports an unsupported Java version
Read the application’s official requirements and install its requested major version. Keep multiple JDKs installed if necessary, then configure the IDE or application to use the required JDK directly. The newest JDK is not automatically compatible with every older application.
The installer requests administrator approval
This is expected for a system-wide installation. Oracle’s Windows installation documentation states that administrator privileges are required.
The download looks incomplete or suspicious
Redownload it from the official Oracle, Microsoft, or Adoptium site. Where a checksum is published, compare the file’s SHA-256 checksum with the vendor’s value. Do not use unofficial “Java download” sites.
The installer fails because of architecture
Recheck Settings > System > About > System type. Select x64 for typical Intel or AMD systems and ARM64 for Windows-on-Arm systems when a native build is available.
Uninstall or replace Java
- First identify the active installation with
where.exe javaandjava -version. - Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Oracle JDK, Java, Temurin, or Microsoft Build of OpenJDK.
- Select the relevant installation and choose Uninstall.
Do not manually delete the JDK folder before using the normal uninstaller unless the uninstaller has failed and you understand the consequences. Avoid replacing or overwriting a JDK directory while Java processes are running.
Final checklist
- Correct distribution chosen.
- Correct Windows architecture selected.
- JDK installed rather than only a runtime, when programming tools are involved.
java -versionworks.javac -versionworks.where.exe javaandwhere.exe javacpoint to the intended installation.JAVA_HOMEconfigured if required.Pathincludes%JAVA_HOME%binwhen necessary.
