Clockify is the best starting point for most people who want a capable free time tracker; Toggl Track is a better fit if you value a simpler interface, while specialist tools suit invoicing, attendance, automatic tracking, or project-management integrations. No one app is best for every kind of time tracking.

Toggl Track is a strong choice for someone who wants to start a timer quickly and review time across web, desktop or mobile. Its free plan includes browser-extension integrations, Google and Outlook Calendar integrations, and productivity reports, according to its pricing page.
Who it suits: solo freelancers and very small teams that value a clean tracking workflow more than a large free feature checklist.
Important limits: the official page describes free users as limited but does not clearly state the number in the supplied research; five users is commonly reported elsewhere, so confirm the current cap before inviting a team. Harvest can be the better specialist choice if invoicing is central. If you only need a free timer or many free users, compare its restrictions carefully with Clockify or Toggl Track.

6. Jibble: best for attendance and field teams

A timer records intervals; a project tracker organizes them; an invoice tool turns eligible work into client charges; an attendance system records clock-in/out. Payroll workflows may additionally require approvals, locked entries, audit history, breaks, overtime rules and payroll integrations. A free time tracker should not be called payroll-ready without those controls.
Test the forgotten-timer workflow
Before a team depends on a tool, check how users can add a missed entry, edit a time range, split time between projects and review idle periods. If entries require approval, find out whether approved records can be corrected and whether the change is recorded. Automatic tracking can help reconstruct a day, but people still need a clear correction process.
Check reports and portability
Find out whether reports can be grouped by client, project, task and person, and whether they distinguish billable from non-billable time. Confirm the report-history window and export formats.
