Short answer: Mojang’s rules do not authorize Minecraft servers to admit players who lack an authentic, paid copy of the game. That does not mean switching a server to offline mode is automatically a crime: legal consequences depend on what the operator and players do, where they are, and whether pirated clients, authentication-bypass tools, stolen accounts, or money are involved.
What is a cracked Minecraft server?
A “cracked” server usually means a Minecraft server configured to accept connections without the usual account authentication, often so people without a paid copy can join. It is also called an offline-mode, non-premium, or no-auth server. The terms are related but not identical: offline mode describes a technical configuration, while cracked server usually describes a server intended to admit unlicensed clients.
On an ordinary authenticated Java server, the server checks players through Minecraft’s account system. When that check is disabled, the server does not perform the normal authentication. That can make it harder to know that a connection really belongs to the named player, creating opportunities for impersonation and other security problems.
What do Minecraft’s rules say?
Mojang does permit multiplayer servers. The Minecraft EULA says buyers may install the Java Edition server version and host online play. Minecraft also promotes community servers on its official servers page. The issue is not that a server is private or independently run; it is whether its operation follows the applicable rules.

The Minecraft Usage Guidelines state that server access may be granted only to users with an “authentic, paid version” of Minecraft. In practical terms, Mojang’s rules do not authorize an operator to admit unlicensed clients, whether the server is free, invite-only, or funded by donations.
The EULA also distinguishes original mods from distributing modified versions of the game. It allows certain original mods under its conditions, but says not to distribute hacked or modded versions of the Minecraft client or server software. Having the official server files therefore does not grant permission to distribute the paid client or bypass its licensing and authentication.

Is it illegal, or just against the EULA?
Those are separate questions. A server can violate Mojang’s terms and risk account or service enforcement without every part of its operation automatically being a criminal offense. Conversely, conduct that goes beyond merely hosting an offline-mode server—such as distributing copied game files, selling access to a pirated client, trafficking in authentication-bypass tools, or using stolen credentials—can raise additional legal issues.
- Contract and platform rules: Mojang’s EULA and Usage Guidelines set conditions for using its software and hosting servers. Violations can lead to account or service consequences.
- Copyright: Copying or distributing Minecraft software without authorization can create copyright exposure. The EULA’s permission to host server software is not a license to redistribute the game client.
- Anti-circumvention: In the United States, the Copyright Office’s explanation of DMCA Section 1201 addresses circumvention of technological access controls and trafficking in circumvention technology or services. Whether it applies to a particular launcher or server depends on the facts; it is not accurate to say every offline-mode server necessarily violates that law.
- Other laws and policies: Stolen accounts, impersonation, payment fraud, misleading branding, privacy practices, and hosting-provider rules can create separate problems.
These outcomes are not interchangeable: a contract dispute, account suspension, civil copyright claim, and criminal prosecution are different things. Laws vary by country and, within the United States, can also vary by state. The available official sources do not establish that merely operating any cracked server is categorically a crime.

What are the risks for players and operators?

A player who simply connects to a server should not automatically be labeled a criminal. But playing through a pirated client is materially different from using a legitimate copy on an unofficial server. A server owner should not assume that a user’s ability to connect proves the user has a license.
What if every player owns Minecraft?
If every participant has a legitimate copy, that reduces the concern associated with providing access to unlicensed users. It does not create a blanket exception for disabling authentication or guarantee that every offline-mode arrangement complies with Mojang’s rules. The sources do not provide a universal safe harbor for such setups.

Some technical arrangements, such as isolated testing or proxy-based server networks, may have reasons to configure components differently. The important practical point is to use an authenticated, officially supported setup where possible. A network operator should ensure the public-facing layer verifies users appropriately and that backend systems cannot be reached in a way that lets outsiders impersonate players. If the architecture depends on disabling checks, consult current Mojang guidance and the relevant provider’s terms rather than assuming that owning a copy resolves every issue.

Mojang’s Usage Guidelines allow some forms of server monetization, subject to conditions on matters such as age-appropriate content and advertising, privacy disclosures, pricing, payment histories, and compliance with applicable law. But those monetization permissions do not cancel the requirement that server access be limited to players with an authentic, paid version of Minecraft. Selling ranks, cosmetics, or access—or accepting donations—does not make admitting unlicensed clients authorized.

Commercial operation can add practical exposure too: payment disputes, chargebacks, consumer-protection obligations, privacy duties if player data is collected, and scrutiny from hosting or payment services. Do not present a server as “official” or affiliated with Mojang or Microsoft unless that is true. Review the current Usage Guidelines and your provider’s acceptable-use policy before taking money.
Can Mojang or Microsoft take action?
The EULA reserves enforcement rights, including suspension or permanent bans for violations. Microsoft also describes procedures for copyright and trademark infringement notices. Depending on the circumstances, practical consequences could include account action, removal from official listings, requests to remove infringing files or links, or action by a hosting provider, domain registrar, payment processor, or advertising service.
That does not mean Mojang routinely sues every small server. The published rules and reporting procedures establish possible enforcement routes, not a prediction about what will happen in any particular case. A hosting company may separately prohibit piracy or authentication bypasses even where an operator believes local law is uncertain.

- For players: Use a legitimate Minecraft license and join servers that authenticate players. Download the game through official channels; do not give account credentials to server operators or unofficial verification pages.
- For a private group: Use an authenticated Java server or consider Minecraft Realms, an official managed option. Realms is not a way to admit unlicensed players.
- For operators: Use official server software, preserve normal authentication for ordinary public play, and check both Mojang’s current guidelines and the host’s acceptable-use policy.
- For modders: Distribute original plugins or mods separately and follow the EULA. Do not bundle a modified Minecraft client or redistribute Mojang’s game files.
Unofficial launchers and cracked-client downloads also create security risks. Some may bundle credential stealers, token theft, remote-access malware, or other unwanted software; that does not mean every third-party launcher is malicious. Be especially wary of requests for Microsoft login details outside a trusted sign-in flow.
