If Face ID fails only in WhatsApp, check WhatsApp’s lock setting and its iPhone permission before changing Face ID itself. If Face ID also fails to unlock your iPhone or work in other apps, troubleshoot the iPhone’s Face ID system instead. Start with the non-destructive checks below; don’t delete WhatsApp before confirming your chats are backed up.
First, identify what is failing
WhatsApp can be protected in three different ways: WhatsApp’s own Screen Lock, iOS’s optional Home Screen app lock, and the iPhone’s general Face ID system. The fix depends on which one is involved.

To make the key distinction, lock your iPhone and try Face ID. If available, test it in another protected app too. Apple says supported apps receive only the result of authentication—not your enrolled face data. Face ID processing is local to the device; an internet connection is not generally required for biometric authentication. Apple explains how Face ID data is handled.

Try these quick fixes without risking your chats
- Enter the passcode after restarting. Restart the iPhone, unlock it once with your device passcode, then open WhatsApp and test Face ID. A passcode request after a restart or another security-related event does not, by itself, mean Face ID is broken.
- Clean and uncover the front camera area. Wipe the notch or Dynamic Island area with a clean, soft cloth. Temporarily remove a case or screen protector if it might cover the TrueDepth camera. Look for dirt, cracks, or damage. Apple notes that smudges and accessories can obstruct the camera.
- Adjust your position. Make sure your eyes, nose, and mouth are visible, look toward the camera, and hold the iPhone about 10–20 inches from your face. Try without sunglasses that may block infrared light. Face ID with a mask has requirements: Apple supports it on iPhone 12 and later with iOS 15.4 or later, in portrait orientation.
- Try portrait orientation. Face ID in landscape is supported on iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later. On earlier Face ID models, test in portrait.
- Force-close and reopen WhatsApp. Open the App Switcher, swipe WhatsApp away, then launch it again. This can clear a stuck app state, though it will not correct a disabled permission or a hardware problem.

Check WhatsApp’s own Screen Lock
WhatsApp’s built-in lock is separate from the iPhone’s general Face ID settings and iOS’s Home Screen app lock. In WhatsApp, look for Settings → Account or Privacy → Screen Lock (on some versions it may be called App Lock or use slightly different labels), then check Require Face ID. A commonly documented route is Settings → Account → Privacy → Screen Lock → Require Face ID, but menus can vary by WhatsApp release or region.
If the setting is already on but authentication is not working:
- Turn Require Face ID off.
- Close WhatsApp and reopen it to check that the lock state has changed.
- Turn the setting back on and test again.
- If WhatsApp offers a lock delay, choose the shortest option, such as Immediately, while testing. A longer delay can make the absence of an immediate prompt seem like a failure.

Check WhatsApp’s iPhone Face ID permission
iOS may show a separate permission for apps to use Face ID. Depending on your iOS version, check one of these locations:
- Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Other Apps → WhatsApp
- Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Face ID
If you see WhatsApp, make sure Face ID access is allowed. You can switch it off and on again, then relaunch WhatsApp. If WhatsApp is not listed, enable its own Screen Lock first and try to use it; the app may not appear until it has requested access.
Check iOS’s Home Screen app lock separately
On supported recent iOS versions, you can lock an app from the Home Screen by touching and holding its icon and choosing Require Face ID. This iOS app lock is not WhatsApp’s internal Screen Lock. If you used it for WhatsApp, open the icon’s menu again and, if offered, choose the option to stop requiring Face ID. Test the app, then re-enable the lock if you want to use it. The control is version-dependent, so it may not appear on every iPhone.

Update WhatsApp and iOS
An update can address a software or compatibility issue, but an outdated app is only one possible cause—not a diagnosis. Check for iOS updates at Settings → General → Software Update. To update WhatsApp, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, and check for available updates. Updating may also change menu labels or behavior.
Reset Face ID only if broader checks point to the iPhone
If Face ID is unreliable across the iPhone—not just in WhatsApp—and cleaning, positioning, restarting, and checking settings have not helped, you can re-enroll it: Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Reset Face ID → Set Up Face ID. You will need the iPhone passcode and will scan your face again. This removes the existing Face ID enrollment; it does not delete WhatsApp chats or reset the iPhone. It will not repair a damaged TrueDepth camera.
If your appearance has changed substantially or varies in a way that affects recognition, iOS offers Set Up an Alternate Appearance. Use it for your own appearance, not as a casual way to enroll another person: Face ID may then recognize that person, which has security implications.

If WhatsApp crashes after Face ID
A crash or return to the Home Screen after a scan does not automatically mean the Face ID sensor is faulty. Force-close and reopen WhatsApp, restart the iPhone, then update WhatsApp and iOS. If the crash continues, consider reinstalling only after checking your chat backup and account access.
Before deleting WhatsApp, open its settings and confirm a recent chat backup, and make sure you can receive the verification code for the phone number linked to your account. Reinstallation can put chats or media at risk if a usable backup is missing. It is not a first-line fix for a Face ID problem.

Contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider if the iPhone says Face ID is unavailable, you cannot complete Face ID setup, the front camera or sensor area appears damaged, or Face ID fails system-wide after the basic checks. Back up the iPhone and note the exact error. Mention any recent screen, front-camera, water, drop, or logic-board repair. Apple warns that improper repairs or nongenuine components affecting the TrueDepth laser system can impair Face ID and create safety risks; use trained service providers rather than attempting an unofficial repair.

A factory reset is not a sensible early step: it is disruptive, can complicate backup and sign-in, and will not fix an obstruction or damaged hardware. If software restoration is being considered after all other checks, back up first and consult Apple Support.

Why does WhatsApp ask for my passcode instead of Face ID?
A passcode request can be normal after an iPhone restart or another security-related event. Enter the device passcode once and try WhatsApp again. If the request continues, check WhatsApp’s lock setting and its iOS Face ID permission.
Why does Face ID work on the Lock Screen but not in WhatsApp?
The iPhone may be working normally while WhatsApp’s Screen Lock is off, its Face ID permission is disabled, or the app is stuck or outdated. Check WhatsApp’s lock setting and the version-appropriate iOS app permission.

Resetting Face ID removes the iPhone’s existing facial enrollment; it does not erase WhatsApp chats. Reinstalling WhatsApp is different and can risk chats or media if you do not have a usable backup.
Can a screen protector stop Face ID?
It can if it covers or obstructs the TrueDepth camera area. Temporarily remove a protector or case that overlaps the notch or Dynamic Island and test again.
Why does Face ID fail when I hold my iPhone sideways?
Landscape Face ID is supported on iPhone 13 and later with iOS 16 or later. Test in portrait on earlier Face ID iPhones. Face ID with a mask is also limited to portrait orientation.
