Yes—Google Maps was reported to support Android 16’s Live Updates during the beta, but only in a specific early configuration. A March 6, 2025 report observed the feature on a Pixel running Android 16 Beta 2.1 with Google Maps version 25.09.02 or newer. It did not work in Beta 2, and the status-bar pill appeared only when Maps picture-in-picture was off. This was evidence of an early beta implementation, not proof of universal or unchanged support in stable Android 16.
What Google Maps’ Live Updates looked like
Live Updates let an active Maps navigation session appear outside the full-screen app as a system-level status-bar pill and ongoing notification. Tapping the pill could reveal more trip information, which remained accessible while the user switched to another app. It was an at-a-glance companion to navigation—not a replacement for the full map, route view, voice guidance or controls.
The specific Maps behavior was reported by 9to5Google on March 6, 2025. The report described an observed beta implementation; Google’s official material separately describes the Android platform feature and its notification framework.

Requirements in the original report
- Device: a Pixel running the relevant Android 16 beta.
- Android build: Beta 2.1. The report said the feature did not work on Beta 2.
- Maps version: 25.09.02 or newer.
- Activity: active turn-by-turn navigation.
- Picture-in-picture: off. The pill was observed only when Maps PiP was disabled.
Those version numbers describe the March 2025 beta report; they are not current installation requirements for stable Android 16. The report also noted a “Live Info” option in Maps’ app-info screen. Treat that as a label seen in the beta, not a guarantee that every Android build uses the same setting name or path.

How it differs from other Maps features
Android 16 Live Updates changed how an ongoing activity could be surfaced by the operating system. It did not create live navigation data or change how Maps calculates routes.
- Real-time traffic and rerouting provide road conditions and route adjustments inside Maps. These predate Android 16 Live Updates.
- Glanceable directions offer useful route details such as ETA or the next turn without keeping the full navigation screen open.
- Picture-in-picture keeps a floating Maps window on screen, typically showing a visual portion of the map.
- Live Updates present progress through an Android notification surface, such as a status-bar pill and notification.
Google describes existing navigation and glanceable-direction capabilities in its Maps help documentation. The beta report’s PiP limitation suggests the two persistent views acted as alternatives in that implementation. The source documented the behavior, but did not provide Google’s formal explanation for why they could not appear together.

Why Android added Live Updates
Android introduced Live Updates as a notification format for ongoing, user-started, time-sensitive activities that people may want to monitor without repeatedly opening an app. Navigation, rideshare progress and food delivery are examples. Android’s developer announcement describes the underlying ProgressStyle notification template and the intended progress-centric use cases in its Android 16 Beta announcement.
The idea is comparable at a high level to Apple’s Live Activities: both keep an active task visible beyond its app. Android’s implementation is its own platform feature, using Android notification and system surfaces; it is not simply Apple’s interface copied onto Android. Live Updates are meant for meaningful ongoing progress, not ordinary alerts, promotional messages or unrelated ambient information.

Why the beta result may not match your phone
Android 16 Beta 2.1 was unfinished software. Google’s Android 16 release notes warned that beta builds could have compatibility problems, including with Google apps, and were not CTS-approved. A behavior visible in one beta could change, disappear or vary in a later build.
If you are trying to understand or reproduce the historical report, check that the tested setup has the stated beta build and Maps version, that navigation is active, and that picture-in-picture is off. Also check Maps’ notification permissions and any available Live Updates or Live Info control. If the pill still does not appear, that does not establish that the report was false: a different build, device interface, app version or beta behavior could account for the difference. The specific report does not establish identical availability across manufacturers or regions.

For privacy, remember that an ongoing notification can make trip information more prominent on notification surfaces and potentially the lock screen. Review your lock-screen and notification settings if you do not want route details visible to someone else.

Android 16 reached its stable release on June 10, 2025, with Google initially rolling it out to supported Pixel devices. That release does not retroactively turn the March beta observation into a guarantee that every Android 16 phone or Maps installation has the same pill and behavior. Google described Live Updates as an expanding capability, and later demonstrations showed examples involving Maps, Waymo One and Uber Eats, with availability expected to reach devices over time. In short, the report was genuine and specific: it showed early Maps support for Android 16 Live Updates on Beta 2.1 with Maps 25.09.02 or later, while Beta 2 failed and PiP had to be off. It documented a promising system-level way to keep navigation progress handy—not a new Maps navigation mode or a guarantee of universal stable-release availability.
