If an external microphone isn’t working with your iPhone or iPad, first find out whether the problem is the mic, its connection, or one app. Record a short clip in Voice Memos with the external mic connected, then disconnect it and repeat the test using the device’s built-in microphone. If the external mic works in Voice Memos but not in another app, focus on that app’s permission and audio-input settings. If it fails everywhere, check the connector, adapter, power, and compatibility before assuming the iPhone or iPad is faulty.
Start with two quick tests
“Not working” can mean the iPhone or iPad doesn’t detect the mic, records silence, uses its built-in mic instead, or captures very quiet or distorted sound. It can also work in one app but fail in another. The tests below help separate those cases.
- Test the external mic: Connect or pair it, open Voice Memos, record while speaking close to the mic, and play the recording back. Look for waveform or sound-level activity while recording. Voice Memos is a useful first check, but a successful test there does not guarantee every other app supports the same input.
- Test the internal mic: Disconnect the external mic and make another Voice Memos recording. If this recording works but the external one doesn’t, the built-in mic is at least working in this test; investigate the accessory, connection, power, or routing.
- Compare apps: If Voice Memos works with the external mic, test the app where you noticed the problem. You can also record a short video with the front and rear cameras. Results can vary by app and recording mode.
- Try another compatible device, if available: If the mic fails there too, suspect the mic, receiver, cable, or battery. If it works elsewhere, the issue may be this device, its adapter or port, or the app.
These tests are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular fault. A microphone may work in one app and still be unsupported or routed differently in another.

Check what kind of microphone you have
Before changing settings or replacing anything, identify how the microphone connects:

- Lightning: A Lightning mic or wireless receiver must fit the device’s port and be designed for that connection.
- USB-C: A USB-C mic or receiver may connect directly, but some devices need more power than the iPhone, iPad, or adapter can provide. Compatibility can also depend on the app.
- 3.5-mm analog: Connector wiring matters. A phone-oriented TRRS mic and a camera-oriented TRS mic are not necessarily interchangeable. A plug-shape adapter may not convert the signal or wiring correctly. Use an adapter specified for your microphone and device, and check the microphone maker’s compatibility guidance.
- Bluetooth: A headset that plays audio over Bluetooth may have a call microphone, but that does not mean every recording app will use it or provide the quality you expect.
- Wireless system with a receiver: Confirm that the receiver is the right Lightning or USB-C version, or that its adapter is suitable for both the receiver and device.
Not every accessory described as a “phone mic” will work with every iPhone, iPad, adapter, and app. Compatibility depends on the connector, electrical signal, power needs, and software support.
Fix a wired microphone
- Reconnect it firmly. Disconnect the mic, then reconnect it. Remove the case if it stops the plug or receiver from seating completely.
- Remove intermediate equipment. If possible, connect the mic directly rather than through a hub, extension, or extra adapter. Each additional connection is another possible point of failure.
- Inspect the cable and connectors. Check for bends, fraying, looseness, or visible damage. If the cable is detachable, try another known-good cable; if you can, test another suitable adapter or microphone.
- Check the port carefully. Debris can prevent a connector from making contact. Apple’s accessory connection troubleshooting recommends checking for debris, connecting accessories directly, and trying another cable or accessory. Power down where practical and use a soft, dry brush or another method approved by the device manufacturer. Don’t use metal tools, force, or liquids in the port. If it looks damaged, seek service rather than probing it.
- Consider power needs. Some USB microphones and audio interfaces draw more power than the device or adapter supplies. Check the accessory maker’s requirements. If external power is needed, use an adapter or hub designed to support data and external power—not a charge-only adapter. A powered hub can add bulk and another connection to troubleshoot.
- Check analog compatibility. If a 3.5-mm mic works on a computer or camera but not the iPhone or iPad, verify whether it is TRS or TRRS and whether the adapter is intended for that mic type. An adapter that only changes plug size may not convert the input correctly.
A native Lightning or USB-C mic can avoid some adapter problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix if the app, port, or accessory itself is at fault.

Fix a Bluetooth microphone
- Charge the microphone or headset and make sure it is powered on.
- Disconnect it from other nearby devices that may be holding the Bluetooth connection.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then test again.
- If it still fails, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the accessory, and choose Forget This Device. Put the microphone into pairing mode and pair it again.
- Retest in Voice Memos and then in the app you actually want to use.
Bluetooth devices can behave differently when an app activates the microphone: a headset may switch audio modes, with changes to sound quality or behavior. Bluetooth input also varies by accessory and app. If a Bluetooth mic works for calls but not a particular recording app, check that app’s support and input controls before replacing the mic.

When the external mic works in Voice Memos, the connection can pass audio in at least one app. Check the app-specific causes first:

- Allow microphone access: Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and enable the affected app. Menu wording can vary with iOS or iPadOS version. Close and reopen the app after changing access.
- Check the app’s input selector. If the app offers an audio-input or microphone selector, confirm it is using the external mic. Some apps expose input controls only during a call or recording, and routing options vary by app and version.
- Test with the built-in mic. If the app also fails with the internal mic, its permission, account/session, or app behavior may be involved rather than the external accessory alone.
- Restart and update the app. Force-close and reopen it, then check the App Store for an update. For a browser-based meeting, microphone permission may be needed both in iOS/iPadOS and in the browser or website session.
- Try connecting after the activity starts. Disconnect the mic, open the app and begin the recording, call, or live session, then connect the mic and test. This is a reported app-specific workaround, not a universal iOS fix.
- Consider restrictions. On a managed device, Screen Time or device-management restrictions may affect access. If the app still has no microphone access or input option, contact the app developer or device administrator.
If the app never appears in the Microphone privacy list, reinstalling it may prompt a fresh access request, but treat that as a later step. Reinstallation can remove app-specific data, so check the app’s backup or sign-in requirements first.
Restart and update iPhone or iPad
A restart can clear a temporary connection or software issue. Use the button sequence for your specific device; Apple’s restart instructions cover current iPhone models and link to model-specific guidance. iPad button combinations vary by model, so use Apple’s instructions for your iPad rather than assuming one sequence applies to every generation.

Also check Settings > General > Software Update and install an available update if appropriate. Updating is a sensible troubleshooting step, but it is not evidence that a particular iOS or iPadOS release fixes your microphone problem.
Use Reset All Settings only as a late step
If the mic fails across apps after you have checked compatibility, connection, permission, restart, and updates, you can consider Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings. Exact wording may vary by software version.

This option is not the same as erasing all content: it normally does not delete photos or apps. It resets system preferences and settings, including items such as network settings, privacy permissions, and customized preferences. You may need to restore Wi-Fi passwords, VPN settings, Bluetooth pairings, and other preferences. Back up first, and don’t expect a settings reset to repair damaged hardware or make an incompatible mic work.

When to contact support
- Contact Apple or a qualified service provider if the internal mic also fails across recording apps, the port is loose or damaged, the device has liquid or impact damage, or several known-good external mics and adapters fail on the device. Apple advises seeking service when accessory connection problems persist after basic connection, cable, restart, and software checks in its accessory troubleshooting guidance.
- Contact the microphone manufacturer if the accessory fails on other compatible devices, its receiver will not pair, or you need to confirm connector, adapter, or power requirements.
- Contact the app developer if the mic works in Voice Memos and other apps but not in that app, even after checking permission and input selection.
