If VLSub is missing, freezes, or fails to find or download subtitles, first check which extension you have. The older vlsub.lua was built for OpenSubtitles.org and is obsolete for current use. Replace it with VLSub OpenSubtitles.com, a separate third-party extension that requires VLC 3.0 or newer and an OpenSubtitles.com account.
Why the old VLSub stopped working
There are two extensions commonly called “VLSub,” and confusing them leads to outdated fixes. The legacy vlsub.lua targets OpenSubtitles.org. OpenSubtitles says that extension became unreliable after February 26, 2017, following API deprecation and compatibility problems with newer VLC releases. That history explains familiar symptoms such as 401 Unauthorized, a search that hangs, or an extension that stops responding. It does not mean every current failure has the same cause: credentials, network access, file permissions, search metadata, and VLC packaging can also matter. OpenSubtitles’ explanation of the replacement describes the transition.
The replacement is named VLSub OpenSubtitles.com and uses the OpenSubtitles.com REST API. It is a third-party VLC Lua extension, not a built-in VLC feature. The project lists VLC 3.0 or newer and an OpenSubtitles.com account as requirements. Its releases page listed version 1.2.6 when checked on August 18, 2026; check the releases page for the version currently available.

Manual installation lets you see exactly which file is being added. Download vlsubcom.lua from the project’s Releases page. Put it in the extension folder for your operating system, creating the folders if necessary. Close all VLC windows and reopen VLC before checking the menu.

Windows
- Copy
vlsubcom.luato%APPDATA%vlcluaextensions. - If the folders do not exist, create
luaextensionsunder%APPDATA%vlc. - Exit VLC completely and reopen it.
- Choose
View → VLSub OpenSubtitles.com.
macOS
- Copy the file to
~/Library/Application Support/org.videolan.vlc/lua/extensions/. Create the folders if needed. - Restart VLC.
- Choose
VLC → Extensions → VLSub OpenSubtitles.com.
Linux
- Create the extension directory if needed:
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/. - Copy
vlsubcom.luainto~/.local/share/vlc/lua/extensions/. - Restart VLC and choose
View → VLSub OpenSubtitles.com.
Flatpak and Snap: these package formats are sandboxed and can use different VLC data directories. The standard Linux path above may not be the active path for your installation. Check the project’s installation notes and your package’s VLC data location rather than guessing.
Optional: use the project’s installer
The project also provides one-command installers. Review the script before running it; if you are not comfortable executing a remote script, use the manual steps above instead. Do not disable antivirus or other security protections, and avoid downloading extension files from untrusted software-download sites.

Configure your account and search
- Open the extension from VLC’s menu:
View → VLSub OpenSubtitles.comon Windows and Linux, orVLC → Extensions → VLSub OpenSubtitles.comon macOS. - Open Config, enter your OpenSubtitles.com username and password, and save the configuration. The extension requires an account; the project documentation says registration is free. A browser login session does not replace entering credentials in the extension.
- Open or restart the video, then try Search by Hash first if it is a complete local file. Hash search can find a closer match for the specific video file.
- If hash search finds nothing, try Search by Name. Correct the title and, where relevant, add the release year or the season and episode. For a TV episode, a filename such as
Show.Name.S01E01.mkvgives the name search useful identifying information. - Check that the desired language is selected. The project says the extension supports up to three preferred languages.
For the account and search details, see the project’s usage guide. A free account is a requirement, not a guarantee that every search will succeed or that the service has a subtitle for every release.

Fix the symptom you see

Check where the file is saved
If search works but downloading does not, inspect the extension’s configured working directory rather than assuming the subtitle will always be saved beside the video. Confirm that the directory exists and that your account can write to it. On Windows, avoid protected locations such as C:Program Files; on macOS and Linux, use a user-owned writable folder. Check available disk space and whether security software prevented VLC from writing. Do not run VLC permanently as administrator or root to work around a folder permission problem.
Use VLC messages for a more specific diagnosis
- In VLC, open
Tools → Messagesand reproduce the failure. - For more detail, open
Tools → Preferences, set Show settings to All, then go toAdvanced → Logger verbosityand choose 2 (Debug). - Restart VLC, reproduce the issue, and review
Tools → Messagesagain.
The project documents these steps in its usage guide. If seeking help, note your operating system and version, VLC version and installation source, extension version, the exact menu path and error text, whether search and download each work, whether manual subtitle loading works, and whether the problem affects one video or every video. Remove private credentials or tokens before sharing logs.

When manual subtitles are the better fallback
If you need a subtitle for one video and the extension remains unavailable, download a subtitle file from OpenSubtitles.com or another appropriate source, then load it with Subtitle → Add Subtitle File…. VLC can load local subtitle files even when its online-search extension is unavailable. This bypasses VLSub’s search and download integration, but VLC still has to read and display the subtitle file.
