Microsoft Edge already used disk caching; the storage-saving change was automatic compression of cached web content. Microsoft announced the feature for eligible Windows devices starting with Edge 102 in July 2022. Most users do not need to enable a setting or change anything.
What disk caching does in Edge
When you visit a website, Edge can keep local copies of reusable resources such as images, scripts and stylesheets. If a page needs a resource that remains in the cache, Edge may load it from local storage rather than download it again. That can make repeat visits faster and reduce network transfers.
A larger cache can keep more resources available, but it also uses more disk space. A cache that is too small can lead to more downloads and reduce the performance benefit. Cached material is temporary: Edge can discard it and download or recreate it when needed.

What Edge’s compression feature changes
Beginning with Edge 102 on Windows, Edge automatically compresses disk-cache content on devices that pass its eligibility checks. Microsoft says those checks are intended to identify cases where compression can save space without an unacceptable performance cost. The feature reduces the disk footprint of cached web resources; it does not remove the cache or compress every file associated with Edge.
This is not a new cache-location option, a switch for enabling disk caching, or a guarantee that Edge will stay below a particular storage amount. Microsoft’s announcement describes automatic behavior, not a consumer-facing toggle. It also does not establish that the same compression behavior applies to macOS, Linux, Android, iOS or WebView2.

What ordinary users need to do
Nothing in normal use: there is no need to install an extension, edit the Registry or look for an “Enable disk caching” setting. The feature is designed to run automatically on eligible Windows systems.

Compression is not a substitute for clearing browsing data if you need to reclaim space immediately. Clearing cached files can prompt sites to download resources again, so pages may temporarily use more network data or load less efficiently. Other data—such as downloads, site storage, profiles and extensions—can also contribute to Edge’s storage use.

What administrators should know about DiskCacheSize
For managed installations, Microsoft documents the DiskCacheSize policy, displayed as “Set disk cache size, in bytes.” It is a separate administrative control from automatic cache compression. Microsoft recommends relying on Edge’s automatic cache management unless an organization has a specific reason to set a custom value.
Supported platforms and scope
Microsoft’s current policy documentation lists support from Edge 77 onward on Windows and macOS. It marks the policy unsupported on Android and iOS. The policy is not per-profile, so administrators should not expect it to assign a separate cache size to each Edge profile.

Windows configuration
- In Group Policy, go to Administrative Templates → Microsoft Edge → Set disk cache size, in bytes and configure the policy as required.
- Alternatively, an administrator can create the
DiskCacheSizevalue underHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdge. Microsoft specifies the value type asREG_DWORD. - Restart Edge for the policy change to take effect; dynamic policy refresh is not supported for this setting.
The Microsoft policy documentation gives 335544320 as an example value, not a universal recommendation. It is approximately a 320 MiB-scale setting; the actual policy is a hint to cache subsystems, not a precise cap on total cache storage.

How to interpret the policy value
- It is not a hard limit. The value is a suggestion to multiple cache subsystems. Total disk use across caches can exceed it, though Microsoft says it should remain within the same general order of magnitude.
- Very small values may not be honored exactly. Values below a few megabytes may be rounded upward to a reasonable minimum.
- Zero does not disable caching. Microsoft says a value of
0restores the default cache size and prevents users from overriding it with the--disk-cache-sizecommand-line flag. - A smaller cache has costs. It can trigger more frequent eviction and repeated downloads, raising network use and reducing caching’s performance benefit.
Administrators should measure storage pressure and workload effects before applying a custom value. A tight cache setting may be a reasonable fleet-level trade-off where local storage is constrained and network capacity is sufficient, but choosing the smallest possible number is not a reliable way to improve browsing.

If Edge appears to be using an unusual amount of space, first distinguish the disk cache from other browser data rather than assuming compression has failed. Downloads, site data, multiple profiles, extensions, update files and diagnostic data may all contribute. The cache compression feature does not shrink Edge’s installed application, updater, WebView2 runtime or every file in a user-data directory.

- If you need space now, review browsing data and remove only the categories you intend to clear; cached files, cookies and site data are distinct categories with different effects.
- If the problem persists, identify which profile or data category is growing before changing a managed cache policy.
- Avoid deleting the entire Edge user-data directory as a first step. That can disrupt or remove profile data; back up and verify sync status before considering any broad reset.
