Install Google Chrome on Ubuntu by downloading the official Debian/Ubuntu .deb package from Google’s Chrome download page, then opening it with Ubuntu’s software installer. You can also install the same package from Terminal with apt. Both routes require a compatible system and administrator access.
Before you install Chrome
Google’s consumer requirements list 64-bit Ubuntu 18.04 or newer and an Intel Pentium 4-or-newer processor with SSE3. Requirements and package availability can change; check Google’s current Chrome system requirements if your computer is unusual or older.
Most Ubuntu installation guides target Intel/AMD 64-bit systems. Check yours in Terminal:

lsb_release -aIf uname -m returns x86_64, the usual amd64 Chrome package is the relevant one. If it returns aarch64 or arm64, do not install an amd64 package: confirm that Google’s download page offers a package for your architecture. Google’s documentation does not establish compatible package availability for every ARM64 Ubuntu device.

You will need an internet connection, an existing browser such as Firefox to download the package, and an administrator password. The official package is Google Chrome, not Chromium: Chromium is a separate open-source browser distributed through other channels.
Install Chrome with Ubuntu’s software installer
- Open Firefox or another browser and go to google.com/chrome.
- Choose the 64-bit .deb (For Debian/Ubuntu) download, if it is listed as compatible with your computer.
- Accept Google’s terms and download the file.
- Open the downloaded
.debfrom your Downloads folder. Ubuntu should open it in its software installer. - Select Install, Install Package, or the equivalent action shown in your Ubuntu version.
- Enter your administrator password when prompted and wait for installation to finish.
- Open the application menu and search for Google Chrome.
Button names and the package-opening experience vary by Ubuntu release and desktop environment. If double-clicking the file opens an archive or another application, right-click it and choose Open With Software Install (or the closest equivalent), or use the Terminal method below.
Install Chrome from Terminal
Download the official Debian/Ubuntu package from Google first. Then open Terminal and run:
cd ~/Downloads
ls
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ./google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.debThe filename in the command is the common one, but it can differ if Google changes it or you renamed the download. Use the exact name shown by ls, including its extension. For example:
sudo apt install ./your-downloaded-file.debThe ./ before the filename tells apt to install a local package from the current folder. Without it, apt may treat the name as a repository package instead. Confirm the installation if prompted and enter your administrator password. The password characters may not appear as you type.
When installation finishes, launch Chrome from the application menu, or try google-chrome in Terminal. To verify the installed version, run:

google-chrome --versionThe Terminal route is an alternative, not a requirement. Ubuntu supports both .deb packages and Snap packages; Google’s standard Chrome download for Debian/Ubuntu is a .deb. See Ubuntu’s explanation of Snap and deb packages.

Set Chrome as your default browser and bring in your data
Chrome may offer to become the default browser the first time you open it. You can also open Ubuntu Settings, choose Default Applications, and select Google Chrome for Web or Browser. The section and labels can differ between releases and desktop environments.
Signing in to a Google account is optional. If you choose to sign in, you can enable Chrome Sync for supported items such as bookmarks and settings. Chrome also offers an option to import bookmarks and other settings from browsers such as Firefox; follow the prompts during setup or look in Chrome’s settings.
How Chrome updates on Ubuntu
Google says its Linux installation adds Chrome to the software manager so the browser can receive updates, and directs Linux users to update through their package manager. In practice, updates are applied through Ubuntu’s package-management workflow; they are not necessarily installed the instant Google releases them.
To refresh package information and install available system package updates, run:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgradeThis can update other packages as well as Chrome. To check Chrome specifically, open it and go to Menu (three dots) > Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome checks its version there and may ask you to select Relaunch to finish an update. Details are in Google’s Chrome update guidance.

Troubleshooting installation problems
The package will not open in the software installer
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Open With Software Install or an equivalent option. If that is unavailable, install it from Terminal using sudo apt install ./filename.deb from the folder containing the file.
apt says the file cannot be found
Check that you are in the right folder with pwd, list the files with ls, and copy the package’s exact name into the command. If it is not in ~/Downloads, change to the folder where it was saved.
Dependency or package errors appear
First run sudo apt update and retry the local-package installation. If the download may be incomplete or corrupt, delete it, download a fresh copy from Google’s official page, and try again. Google also recommends checking system requirements and provides Chrome installation troubleshooting. Avoid random PPAs or third-party Chrome downloads: repositories outside Ubuntu’s own sources carry a trust and maintenance decision. The computer is ARM64
Do not force the amd64 package onto ARM64. Check Google’s official download page for an explicitly compatible package. If one is not offered for your system, consider Chromium or another browser packaged for your architecture instead.
You do not have an administrator password
The normal system installation requires administrator privileges. Ask the system administrator to install Chrome rather than trying to bypass that restriction.
Chrome installs but does not appear in the menu
Search the application menu for Google Chrome and try google-chrome in Terminal. If the command is unavailable, check whether installation completed and retry the package installation so any errors are visible.

A display or window behavior is wrong
Current Chrome for Linux supports both Wayland and X11, though some window placement, tab dragging, or input behaviors can differ. If you encounter a display-specific issue, Google documents Wayland troubleshooting and the chrome://flags option #ozone-platform-hint. As a diagnostic, you can try launching Chrome with either display backend:
google-chrome --ozone-platform=x11

Uninstall Chrome
To remove the installed Chrome package while keeping your browser profile separate, run:
sudo apt remove google-chrome-stableIf that package name is not found, check installed Chrome-related packages with dpkg -l | grep -i chrome. Removing the application package is not the same as deleting your local Chrome profile; do not remove profile data unless you intend to erase it.
Chrome or Chromium?
Use Google’s official .deb when you specifically want Google Chrome and its official package/update route. Chromium is a separate open-source browser, and installing a package named chromium does not install Google Chrome. Chromium may be a better fit if you prefer an open-source browser or your system architecture is not offered by Google. Ubuntu-managed or community packaging can vary by release, so confirm the package source before installing.
