The Philips Hue Secure wired camera is a convenient security add-on for homes already using Hue lights—but it is 1080p, not 2K. Its strongest reason to buy is the ability to have motion trigger Hue lighting from the Hue ecosystem. At a US list price of $129.99 for the white wall-mount model, it makes most sense for Hue owners who are comfortable with cloud video and do not need higher resolution or local recording.
What the Philips Hue Secure wired camera is
This is an outlet-powered camera designed for indoor or outdoor use. The standard white model is intended for wall mounting; Philips also sells a black version with a desktop stand for freestanding indoor placement. The camera has a 141.2-degree field of view, infrared night vision, a microphone and speaker for two-way talk, and a sound alarm rated at 78 dB. Philips lists Wi-Fi on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, along with Zigbee and Bluetooth connectivity.
Its defining feature is not a standout camera specification. It is the way motion alerts and selected Hue lights can be brought together in the Hue app. A camera-triggered light can make an entrance easier to see or act as a deterrent, but it is not a guarantee against crime or a replacement for monitored security.

Philips lists the Secure wired camera’s maximum video resolution as 1080p. Do not buy it expecting 1440p, QHD or 2K footage. The likely source of the confusion is Philips Hue’s separate wired video doorbell, which the company lists as 2K QHD with a 1:1, 1984 × 1984 image. That doorbell is a different product and form factor.

Philips’s US product specifications are the relevant reference for the camera’s resolution: Hue Secure wired camera. The doorbell’s resolution is listed on its own product page.

These are listed specifications, not a substitute for hands-on image testing. Resolution alone cannot establish how clearly the camera captures a face at a particular distance, handles backlighting or renders motion at night. If identifying detail is the priority, confirm that 1080p suits your intended viewing distance rather than relying on a misleading 2K description.
Hue lighting is the main reason to consider it
The camera can trigger selected Hue lights when it detects motion. That can be useful at a doorway, side path or backyard if you already have Hue bulbs or outdoor fixtures positioned to illuminate the area. You can also use camera and lighting controls together in the Hue app. The value grows with an existing Hue setup; if you have no Hue lights, the camera’s distinctive ecosystem benefit is much smaller.

Keep the two benefits separate: a light reacting to motion does not change the camera’s 1080p sensor or guarantee a clearer recording. Whether extra light improves an image depends on its position, brightness, reflections and the scene. Motion detection can also be inconvenient when a view includes roads, sidewalks, moving foliage, reflective glass, shadows, flags, insects or headlights. Philips lists activity zones among paid-plan features, so check the current plan details if you need to limit the monitored area.
Power, placement and outdoor use
Wired power avoids charging batteries, but it ties installation to a suitable outlet and a safe route for the cable. That can make placement awkward in a garage, detached building or far corner of a yard. The camera is rated IP65, while its power supply is listed as IP20; do not treat the power supply as weatherproof simply because the camera has an outdoor rating. Plan how to keep the supply and connections protected, and consider mounting under an eave where practical.
Before installation, check that the camera can cover the intended entrance without unnecessarily recording a neighbor’s property or public space. Strong backlighting, headlights, rain, spider webs and growing foliage can affect a view or generate unwanted activity. Philips lists a 141.2-degree field of view, but the useful coverage depends on mounting position and the scene, not just the number.

The camera connects over Wi-Fi. Philips lists voice-assistant compatibility with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Samsung SmartThings when used with a Hue Bridge. Its product page also names broader smart-home compatibility categories, but that should not be read as a promise that every platform provides live video, two-way talk, clips, arming, activity zones or Hue-light triggers. Check the exact functions you need for your platform and configuration before buying; use the Hue app as the primary control point for camera features.

What you get without a paid plan
A paid Secure subscription is not required for core use. Philips says the free tier includes live streaming, instant notifications, light and sound alarms, and 24-hour video history. That short history may be enough to check recent activity, but it is a meaningful limitation if you want to retrieve footage days or weeks after an incident.
Philips describes paid plans as adding longer video history and features such as activity zones, clips and smarter alerts. Its plans page refers to 30-day history for Basic and also mentions 60-day history and camera limits in footnotes; the displayed information does not clearly map every limit to every named plan. Plan availability, retention, camera limits and prices can vary by country and change. Check the current details in the Hue app under Settings → Security → Plans before calculating long-term cost.

For a fair ownership comparison, include hardware plus any plan you would actually need. The camera can be used without paying monthly, but the free 24-hour history may not meet the needs of someone buying a camera primarily to preserve evidence.

Philips lists end-to-end encryption as a video feature, and its Secure service uses cloud video. The official product information cited here does not list local microSD or NVR recording, so do not assume that footage is stored locally. Philips says paid-plan footage can be exported to a mobile device; check the current plan terms for the applicable export and retention details.

As with any connected camera, decide who can access the Hue account, how long footage is retained and whether the camera should be disabled or covered at times when monitoring is not appropriate. Review available account-security settings, including two-factor authentication if offered for your account. Also consider what you need the camera to do if Wi-Fi, internet access, power, the Hue account or the Hue Bridge is unavailable. The cited product and plan pages do not establish exactly how every feature behaves in each outage, so do not rely on historical footage, alerts or automations during a disruption without confirming the behavior for your setup.

US price and alternatives within Hue
Philips’s US list price checked on August 18, 2026 was $129.99 for the white wired camera. The black model with desktop stand was listed at $144.99. A three-camera wired bundle was listed at $389.97; promotions and prices can change, so check the current product listing before purchase. These are US prices, not a global price guide.
- Need 2K at the front door? Consider the Hue wired video doorbell, which Philips lists as 2K QHD. It is a doorbell, not a general-purpose camera, and requires compatible doorbell wiring.
- Need flexible placement without a nearby outlet? Hue’s Secure battery camera avoids the wired model’s outlet constraint, but brings battery maintenance. Confirm the exact model and current price in Philips’s camera catalog.
- Need a camera with integrated exterior lighting? Hue’s Secure floodlight camera is aimed at that use and was listed at $309.99 in the US catalog check. It is a substantially more expensive option for buyers who specifically want the combined fixture.
- Need local recording, a battery option or camera-first analytics? Compare dedicated security-camera systems by their exact model, storage method, subscription requirements and supported features. Those details vary, and current model-by-model terms are not established here.
Verdict: a Hue accessory first, a camera second
The Philips Hue Secure wired camera is easiest to recommend to someone who already owns Hue lights, has a convenient power source and wants motion-triggered lighting plus basic camera functions in one ecosystem. Its 1080p resolution, 24-hour free history and cloud-centered service are important limits, not footnotes. Choose another product if 2K, local recording, battery placement or a lower ongoing cost is essential. For a Hue household that accepts those trade-offs, its appeal is the way security and lighting work together—not a resolution advantage.
