“Protected View has stopped working” can describe two different problems: Word or Excel may crash, or Office may fail to open a particular file in Protected View. Start by identifying which one you have. Update Office, test in Safe Mode, and repair the installation before changing security settings. Use Unblock only for an individual file you trust; turning off Protected View for every file is not a safe general fix.
First, identify the problem
Microsoft does not appear to use “Protected View Has Stopped Working” as one standard error message. The words may refer to an application crash, a file-opening failure, or normal Protected View behavior. The distinction determines what to try next.
- Word or Excel crashes, freezes, or closes—even with a blank document: follow the app-crash steps below, starting with updates and Safe Mode.
- A file fails to open in Protected View—often a download, Outlook attachment, or file from a network location: test whether the issue affects one file or a whole category, then check file blocking, Office repair, security software, and policy.
- The file opens read-only with an Enable Editing button: that is usually expected behavior, not a malfunction. Office uses Protected View for files from the Internet, email attachments, potentially unsafe locations, and files that fail validation. Only leave this mode if you trust the file and expected it.

Use the results of a few quick tests
Try a newly created local Word or Excel document, the problem file, and—if relevant—a file from another source. Note whether it came from a web download, Outlook, a network share, OneDrive or SharePoint, USB drive, or another computer.

1. Restart Windows and update Office
Save your work and close Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Office apps. Restart Windows, then try again. A restart can clear a stuck Office process or let a pending update finish.
For Microsoft 365 or Click-to-Run Office, open Word or Excel and select File > Account > Update Options > Update Now. If you see Enable Updates instead, select that first, then check for updates. Restart Office when the update completes. Install pending Windows updates as well, especially if the problem started after a Windows update or affects several Office apps.
Microsoft’s Office stopped-working guidance recommends updating before proceeding with other troubleshooting. Menu availability can differ by Office edition, installation type, and organization policy.
2. Test in Safe Mode and isolate add-ins
Safe Mode helps establish whether an add-in, startup customization, or extension is contributing to a crash. Press Windows key + R, enter the command for the app, and press Enter:

If the app works in Safe Mode but fails in normal mode, disable add-ins to find the conflict:
- Open the app normally and select File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear the add-ins and restart the app normally.
- If the problem is gone, re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting between tests, until the issue returns. Leave the problematic add-in disabled and check with its vendor for an update.
Safe Mode is a diagnostic, not a repair: it bypasses some features and add-in categories. Excel users should also consider Excel add-ins, startup folders, custom templates, and document-management software. See Microsoft’s guidance for Excel hangs, freezes, and stops working.
3. Repair Office
If updates and add-in isolation do not resolve the issue, run Quick Repair. On Windows 11, right-click Start, select Installed apps, find Microsoft 365 or your Office product, select its three-dot menu, then choose Modify > Quick Repair. On Windows 10, go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select the Office product, then choose Modify > Quick Repair. Follow the prompts and restart if requested. Labels can vary slightly by Windows and Office version.

4. If one file fails, check whether it is blocked
For a file whose source and contents you trust, close Office, then in File Explorer right-click the file and select Properties. On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox or button. If it is present, select it, choose Apply, then OK, and reopen the file.
Unblock is a per-file action, not a general repair for Protected View. Do not use it for an unexpected attachment or a file from an unknown source. The control may be absent if the file does not have the relevant Windows security marker, is on a network or cloud path, has already been copied or repackaged, or is controlled by organization policy. 5. Review Protected View settings without leaving protection off
In Word or Excel, open File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Protected View. The main controls cover files originating from the Internet, files in potentially unsafe locations, and Outlook attachments.
If you have a verified backup and understand the risk, you can temporarily clear one relevant option and test with a known-safe file. If the file then opens, that identifies the Protected View path as relevant; it does not prove the underlying cause is fixed. Restore the setting and investigate Office repair, endpoint security, policy, or a build issue. Do not permanently clear all three controls to make opening files easier. Protected View exists to reduce the risk from potentially harmful documents.

Microsoft advises consulting an administrator before changing these controls because policy may manage them. Review its Protected View information and administrator policy guidance.
6. Consider antivirus and endpoint security
Security software may inspect Office files as they open. A conflict can appear after an Office, Windows, antivirus, or endpoint-security update, and may be more common on managed devices. Check whether the security product recently updated, whether it reports blocked Office activity, and whether the failure is limited to attachments or downloaded files.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or create broad exclusions to test this. On a work or school device, ask IT or the security product’s support team to review logs and perform any controlled test. Microsoft includes antivirus conflicts among possible causes of Excel hangs and failures in its Excel troubleshooting guidance.

7. If this is a work or school computer, check policy with IT
Protected View controls that are greyed out, reset after sign-in, or behave differently between users may be enforced by Group Policy, Microsoft 365 cloud policy, or endpoint-security configuration. Microsoft confirms that administrators can manage Protected View settings. Do not try to override the restriction with registry edits; contact IT and provide the exact error, affected files and sources, Office version/build, Windows version, and the time the problem began.

8. If it began right after an update, verify the build before blaming it
An Office update regression is possible, particularly when the issue began immediately after an update, affects more than one Office app or many users, and persists after repair. But timing alone does not prove the update caused it. In Word or Excel, open File > Account and record the product, version, build, and update channel shown. Also note your Windows version and build.
Check Microsoft’s current known-issues pages and, for an organization, Microsoft 365 admin-center advisories. Compare with another device on the same Office channel if available. Microsoft has documented update-related crashes in particular environments—for example, certain Microsoft 365 application builds on Windows Server 2016—with a later build identified as fixed. That example does not establish that a current Protected View failure has the same cause. Do not use a rollback command or install a specific build unless Microsoft’s current guidance applies to your edition, channel, and system.
If a problem remains after repair, test another known-safe file and, if practical, another Windows user profile or device. If the file opens on another device, that narrows the issue to the original device’s profile, policy, security software, or Office installation; it does not identify which one by itself. If it fails everywhere, investigate the file or its source. Escalate persistent managed-device issues to IT; for an unmanaged PC, contact Microsoft Support with the version/build and test results. Reinstalling Office is a later option, not a guarantee, and will not necessarily resolve a build regression, policy, endpoint security conflict, Windows-profile issue, or damaged document.
Why not just turn Protected View off?
Disabling Protected View can bypass the path that is failing, but it removes a security boundary for files Office considers higher risk—such as downloads, attachments, and documents from unsafe locations. A file opening after that change is a clue, not a diagnosis. Prefer updating and repairing Office, isolating add-ins, checking one trusted file’s block status, and asking IT to review policy or security software. Re-enable any option you temporarily changed once the test is complete.
