Yes—SerenityOS can deliver a convincing 1990s-inspired desktop experience, but it is not Windows 95, classic Mac OS, or a historical emulator. It is a modern, open-source operating-system project with a custom kernel, Unix-like tools, a graphical desktop, and a deliberately retro visual language. The usual way to try it is to build it from source and launch it in QEMU, which makes the installation part of the experience.

That distinction matters. Choose SerenityOS for the atmosphere, the coherent desktop, and the opportunity to explore a living operating-system project. Choose historical PC emulation or an actual Windows 95-compatible environment if your goal is authentic period software and hardware behavior.

SerenityOS is an alternate-history desktop, not a time machine

SerenityOS describes itself as a “love letter” to 1990s user interfaces. Its desktop uses the visual vocabulary many people associate with that era: compact windows, raised and recessed controls, dense title bars, menus, small icons, dialog boxes, bitmap-like presentation, and applications that expose their controls instead of hiding them behind minimalist interfaces.

Underneath, however, it is not a 1990s operating system. SerenityOS is built from scratch by an open-source community and combines a custom kernel and userland with modern operating-system engineering. Its project includes a GUI toolkit, filesystem tools, networking, development utilities, a browser engine, security mechanisms, and applications such as a file manager, terminal, editor, media tools, games, calculator, spreadsheet, and image tools. The repository is continuously developed rather than distributed through a conventional consumer release cycle.

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro - a powerful, secure, compatible and more manageable operating system that helps you better manage and protect your devices and data for greater productivity and security.

The result feels like a desktop from an alternate timeline: familiar enough to evoke late-1990s productivity software, but technically and conceptually much newer.

SerenityOS’s project site explains the design philosophy, while the source repository documents the operating system’s architecture and included software.

What kind of 1990s experience does it provide?

“1990s interface” can mean several different things. SerenityOS is strongest at reproducing the visual atmosphere and direct mouse-and-menu interaction of the period. It is not intended to reproduce the exact rules of Windows 95, Windows 98, classic Mac OS, or any particular commercial desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Experience How closely SerenityOS matches
Raised controls, compact windows, menus, icons, and dialogs Strong
A cohesive desktop with built-in utilities Strong
Mouse-driven desktop interaction Strong, although modern shortcuts are also available
Exact Windows 95 or classic Mac OS behavior Limited
Original commercial applications and games No
Period hardware limitations and networking No
Modern operating-system and browser technology Yes

That blend is deliberate. The project preserves the density and discoverability of older graphical interfaces while adding features a real 1990s desktop would not have had, including JavaScript and WebAssembly support, a multiprocess browser architecture, and security concepts such as pledge, unveil, W^X, and KASLR.

What it feels like after booting

The desktop and windows

The first impression comes from the system-wide visual consistency. Window borders, title bars, menus, toolbars, icons, and dialog boxes belong to the same design language. It feels less like applying a retro theme to a modern Linux desktop and more like entering a self-contained operating system designed around one aesthetic.

Windows can be opened, moved, resized, minimized, maximized, tiled, and cycled through. The interface also supports multiple workspaces and keyboard-oriented navigation. Those capabilities are a useful reminder that SerenityOS is not attempting strict historical simulation: it keeps the period’s visual vocabulary while providing conveniences and workflows that suit a modern power user.

The SerenityOS user guide documents shortcuts for window management, file operations, application commands, workspaces, themes, fonts, and display settings. Exact labels and shortcuts may change as the project evolves.

File Manager

The File Manager is one of the best places to judge whether the retro design works as an everyday interaction model. Try creating a directory, renaming a file, copying and moving items, opening a file in its associated application, and navigating through the filesystem.

Unlike a screenshot, these actions reveal the relationship between the desktop and the underlying Unix-like system. The interface encourages traditional desktop file management, while paths, permissions, and the rest of the operating system retain a developer-oriented character.

Text Editor and Terminal

SerenityOS’s dual identity is clearest when the Text Editor and Terminal are open side by side. The editor looks and behaves like a traditional graphical application, with visible menus and compact controls. The terminal exposes a shell, pseudoterminals, standard Unix utilities, and development tools.

This is not the limited command environment of an old home computer. It is a desktop for people who enjoy both direct manipulation and shell-based workflows. The project describes its userland as offering POSIX compatibility alongside its own graphical applications and system tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That combination makes SerenityOS particularly interesting to Linux, BSD, and operating-system enthusiasts: the interface suggests the late 1990s, but the underlying workflow is much closer to a contemporary hobbyist Unix-like system.

Games and demonstrations

Bundled games and visual demonstrations reinforce the alternate-history character. Examples documented by the project include Solitaire, Minesweeper, 2048, Chess, Conway’s Game of Life, Starfield, and Eyes.

These are not a replacement for a library of original Windows 95 games. They are small, self-contained examples of the kind of software that makes the desktop feel like a complete personal computer rather than a bare technical demo.

Settings, themes, and fonts

Settings allow you to adjust elements such as themes, fonts, display size, keyboard mappings, time and clock behavior, browser preferences, and virtual workspaces. The available options are tied to the revision you build, so do not assume that every screenshot or menu documented elsewhere will match your checkout.

The browser: modern engineering in a retro frame

The browser is the most revealing contrast in the system. Its interface fits the retro desktop, but SerenityOS is not simply launching an old browser. The project has built its own browser and web infrastructure, with support for JavaScript, WebAssembly, multiple document and image formats, and a multiprocess design with sandboxing.

That should not be interpreted as universal modern-web compatibility. A development operating system with an evolving browser engine will not necessarily handle complex web applications, video services, demanding JavaScript frameworks, or every modern CSS feature like Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

A sensible exploration sequence is:

  1. Open a simple static HTML page.
  2. Try a text-heavy documentation page.
  3. Test an image-heavy page.
  4. Visit a page that uses JavaScript.
  5. Try a page that relies on modern CSS.
  6. Use caution with video and complex web applications.

The browser feature documentation provides more detail on the project’s web stack. Treat compatibility as revision-dependent rather than as a promise that the entire modern web will work.

How to run SerenityOS in QEMU

For most readers, QEMU is the best starting point. It is the project’s natural default because the documented run command builds the system and launches it there. The path below is aimed at a Debian- or Ubuntu-based Linux host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements

  • A reasonably modern 64-bit host computer.
  • A supported host operating system. The project documents Linux, macOS, and Windows builds through WSL2.
  • Enough storage for the repository, cross-compilation toolchain, build output, and disk image.
  • A modern compiler toolchain. The current build documentation calls for GCC 14 or Clang 17 and newer toolchains, with tested versions extending beyond those minimums.
  • CMake 3.25 or later.
  • QEMU 6.2 or later.
  • Hardware virtualization where available. Software emulation can work but may be considerably slower.

These are requirements for the cited development documentation, not permanent guarantees. Check the project’s current build instructions before starting.

1. Clone the repository

git clone https://github.com/SerenityOS/serenity.git
cd serenity
git rev-parse HEAD

Recording the revision is important. Menus, applications, shortcuts, build behavior, and browser features can change between checkouts.

2. Install Linux dependencies

On Debian or Ubuntu, the current documentation lists packages including the following:

  • UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 PLUS has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.

Package names differ among distributions. Do not copy this Debian list unchanged to Arch, Fedora, macOS, or WSL2; use the platform-specific instructions in the project repository.

3. Check the host tools

gcc --version
clang --version
cmake --version
qemu-system-x86_64 --version

If the compiler or CMake version is too old, fix that before beginning the build. An apparently mysterious compilation failure is often a host-tool mismatch.

4. Build the cross-compilation toolchain

Meta/serenity.sh rebuild-toolchain

The project’s getting-started documentation gives an approximate 30–60-minute estimate for this step, but actual time depends on the processor, memory, storage, network connection, and existing build artifacts. The first toolchain build is usually the most time-consuming part and normally does not need to be repeated for every run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Build and launch the desktop

Meta/serenity.sh run

The documented command compiles SerenityOS, creates the required image, and launches it in QEMU. A successful run should produce a QEMU guest window, boot the kernel, and bring up the graphical desktop with the bundled applications.

On subsequent attempts, the same command generally reuses existing artifacts unless the source or build configuration requires more work. Keep the terminal open while troubleshooting so that you can read the build and QEMU output.

6. Shut down safely

Use the desktop’s normal shutdown action when possible. Because labels and shutdown behavior can change between revisions, follow the controls visible in the build you are running rather than relying on a screenshot from another release or checkout.

If the guest becomes unresponsive, close or stop the QEMU instance using the controls provided by your host and QEMU frontend. A virtual machine is preferable to bare-metal installation for a first experiment because it makes recovery and rollback much easier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VirtualBox, VMware, and other routes

The project’s advanced build documentation describes VirtualBox and VMware as alternatives to QEMU. They are not necessarily identical in compatibility, performance, display behavior, or setup.

Route Best suited to Trade-off
QEMU The official source-build path and Linux users comfortable with the terminal More command-line work and more host configuration to troubleshoot
VirtualBox Readers who prefer a graphical VM manager The generated image may require additional configuration or conversion, and guest integration can differ
VMware Users already familiar with VMware products Compatibility varies across products and host platforms
Bare metal Advanced experimentation on suitable hardware Less convenient recovery, greater hardware risk, and no easy snapshot rollback

If you use VirtualBox, consult the official VirtualBox 7.2 manual for VM configuration. Do not assume that settings designed for another operating system are optimal for SerenityOS.

Troubleshooting common problems

The script cannot be executed or is not found

Confirm that you are in the repository root:

pwd
ls Meta/serenity.sh
git status

If Meta/serenity.sh is missing, you are probably in the wrong directory or the checkout is incomplete.

A package or command is missing

Return to the current platform-specific dependency list. Names differ across Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, macOS, and WSL2. Installing a similarly named package is not always enough if the build expects a particular development library or QEMU frontend.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The compiler is too old

Check both common compiler families:

gcc --version
clang --version

Upgrade the host toolchain or follow the project’s documented alternative for your platform. Do not assume that a compiler capable of building ordinary Linux software meets SerenityOS’s current requirements.

CMake reports stale-cache problems

After changing CMake versions, older cache files can cause confusing configuration errors. The build documentation gives this cleanup command:

rm Build/*/CMakeCache.txt

Then rerun the build. Be careful when adapting cleanup commands: remove only the cache files you intend to discard.

QEMU does not start

First verify the executable and version:

qemu-system-x86_64 --version

Confirm that the required QEMU system and graphical packages are installed. If the build succeeds but no guest window appears, investigate the host display backend and the QEMU packages rather than rebuilding the entire operating system immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The build is extremely slow

Common causes include the first-time toolchain build, software rather than hardware virtualization, slow storage, insufficient memory, repeated clean builds, and filesystem scanning by security software.

Windows users building through WSL2 should pay particular attention to where the source tree and generated images are stored. The advanced documentation warns about filesystem-performance and path-access problems when native Windows QEMU interacts with files inside the WSL2 filesystem. It describes copying the kernel and disk image to a native Windows path as one possible workaround. Start with the project’s current Windows guide rather than applying Linux instructions unchanged.

The desktop does not match screenshots

Check the commit hash. A menu, shortcut, icon, theme, application, or browser feature may have changed between revisions. This is normal for a continuously developed operating system and is why any serious walkthrough should state its date, commit, host system, compiler, QEMU version, and virtualization status.

Is SerenityOS historically accurate?

Visually, often yes. Historically, no.

SerenityOS captures several things people remember about late-1990s desktops: visible controls, compact layouts, window borders, menu-heavy applications, small icons, and a sense that the desktop itself is the product. It also provides a more coherent and intentional retro environment than simply installing a theme on a modern desktop.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

But historical authenticity would require more than appearance. A genuine period recreation would involve original operating-system behavior, application binaries, APIs, hardware assumptions, performance limitations, drivers, networking, and software distribution. SerenityOS does not attempt that. It offers an original operating system inspired by the era.

It also departs from strict 1990s interaction patterns through features such as modern keyboard shortcuts, command-oriented tools, multiple workspaces, and contemporary security and browser architecture. Those departures are not flaws if your goal is an enjoyable retro-inspired system rather than archival preservation.

Which tool matches your real goal?

Your goal Better fit
A new operating system with a late-1990s-inspired interface SerenityOS
Learning about a from-scratch kernel, GUI, and userland SerenityOS
Running original Windows 95 or Windows 98 software A compatible virtual machine or emulator for that operating system
Recreating period PC hardware and games 86Box or comparable historical PC emulation
Recreating classic Mac OS software and behavior A classic Mac OS emulator and legally obtained system software
A familiar current operating system with retro styling A themed Linux desktop
An alternative desktop OS without compiling the entire system Consider projects such as Haiku, depending on your goals

These are different categories, not interchangeable competitors. SerenityOS should not be judged as a Windows 95 compatibility layer, and an emulator should not be judged as a from-scratch operating-system project.

Who should use SerenityOS?

SerenityOS is a good fit if you:

  • Enjoy retro-computing aesthetics but want a living modern project.
  • Want to study operating-system internals, GUI toolkits, browser development, or userland design.
  • Prefer a cohesive desktop rather than a collection of unrelated themes and extensions.
  • Are comfortable with Git, compilers, build dependencies, and virtual machines.
  • Want an experimental environment that combines a graphical desktop with Unix-like tools.
  • Find the installation and source build interesting rather than merely inconvenient.

It is a poor fit if you need:

  • A reliable daily-driver operating system.
  • Broad commercial hardware support.
  • Long-term security maintenance through a conventional stable-release channel.
  • Commercial productivity applications.
  • Guaranteed compatibility with contemporary websites.
  • A simple installer and a prebuilt consumer image.
  • Exact Windows 95, Windows 98, or classic Mac OS compatibility.

What to preserve if you want a reproducible experience

Because SerenityOS changes continuously, preserve more than a screenshot if you want to recreate the same environment later. Save:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The Git commit shown by git rev-parse HEAD.
  • The generated disk image.
  • The build configuration and relevant command history.
  • The host operating-system version.
  • Compiler, CMake, and QEMU versions.
  • Whether hardware virtualization was enabled.
  • Screenshots of the desktop, settings, and applications you evaluated.

That record turns a moving development snapshot into a reproducible experiment. Without it, a later checkout may legitimately look and behave differently.

Final verdict

SerenityOS is one of the most compelling ways to explore a 1990s-inspired desktop without pretending that the 1990s never ended. Its menus, windows, icons, controls, utilities, games, and typography evoke the period, while its custom kernel, Unix-like tools, browser stack, and security architecture belong to a modern development project.

Run it in QEMU if you want a safe, reversible introduction. Expect to compile from source, record your revision, and tolerate unfinished or changing parts. If you want the original applications, exact APIs, or authentic hardware constraints of the era, use historical emulation instead.
