For most readers, C Programming: A Modern Approach, 2nd Edition by K. N. King is the best first C book. It explains the language more thoroughly than K&R while remaining focused on C. If you already program and want the current C23 standard, choose Modern C, 3rd Edition instead. K&R remains an excellent classic, but it should not be treated as a current C23 guide.
The right choice depends on whether you are learning programming from scratch, moving to C from another language, writing production code, or exploring C’s deeper implementation details.

1. C Programming: A Modern Approach, 2nd Edition — K. N. King
Best overall C programming book.
King’s book is the strongest default recommendation for readers who want to learn C thoroughly from one substantial textbook. It progresses from fundamentals to pointers, arrays, program design, memory, low-level programming, and practical C techniques, with exercises throughout. Its instructional approach is more expansive than K&R’s, making difficult concepts easier to study systematically.
Choose it if you are a beginner who wants a serious textbook, a student taking a C course, or an experienced programmer who prefers complete explanations over a quick tour. It is also a better first choice than K&R for someone who has never programmed.

2. Modern C, 3rd Edition — Jens Gustedt
Best for modern C and C23.
Published in August 2025, the third edition is the clearest choice for readers who specifically want current C. Manning says it covers the C23 standard along with portability, error handling, atomics and synchronization, type-generic programming, and other modern language concerns. C23 is the latest major C standard revision, following C89, C99, C11, and C17.
This is especially suitable for developers coming from Python, Java, JavaScript, or C++, and for engineers working in embedded, systems, or performance-sensitive software. It is less ideal as a first programming book because its pace and subject matter assume more technical maturity.
“C23 support” also needs a practical qualification: compiler, library, embedded-toolchain, and build-system support is not uniform. The book teaches what the standard provides; your environment may implement features at a different pace. See the official Manning page and its online preface.
3. The C Programming Language, 2nd Edition — Kernighan and Ritchie
Best concise classic and foundational companion.
Known as K&R, this book was written by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, one of C’s designers. It is compact, influential, and especially good at showing idiomatic C through small examples. It covers pointers and arrays, structures, input and output, the standard library, and the UNIX system interface.
It is not, however, the universal first C book. Pearson says it assumes familiarity with basic concepts such as variables, assignment, loops, and functions. Its second edition describes ANSI C, not C23, so it should be paired with a current source when learning contemporary C.
K&R is still worth reading for its concise explanations, exercises, historical importance, and insight into traditional C style. Think of it as a classic foundation and desk companion rather than complete modern documentation. Check the Pearson edition details carefully before buying; print and digital listings can have different ISBNs.

4. C Primer Plus, 6th Edition — Stephen Prata
Best gentle traditional beginner book.
C Primer Plus is a patient, broad tutorial for readers who want programming concepts explained alongside C syntax. It covers structured programming, top-down design, pointers, memory management, files, bit manipulation, the preprocessor, and the C library. Review questions and exercises make it suitable for self-study.
At 848 pages according to O’Reilly’s catalog, it is a substantial commitment. Choose it over King’s book if you prefer a slower, more traditional chapter-by-chapter pace. Choose King instead if you want a more streamlined but still comprehensive C textbook.
The sixth edition was updated for C11, not C23. That does not make its core lessons useless, but readers should supplement it with current documentation and modern guidance.

5. Effective C, 2nd Edition — Robert C. Seacord
Best for safer and more reliable professional C.
Effective C is aimed at readers who already understand basic syntax and want to write code that is more portable, maintainable, and resistant to common correctness problems. It is particularly relevant to undefined behavior, implementation differences, defensive programming, and the gap between code that merely compiles and code that behaves reliably across platforms.
The second edition includes an appendix covering C23, giving it more current-standard context than many older professional C books. Its detailed contents are available from No Starch Press.
Do not use it as your first programming textbook. It is a follow-up to a fundamentals book, and it cannot by itself guarantee secure software. Reliable C also requires warnings, testing, sanitizers, static analysis, review, and knowledge of the target platform.
6. Expert C Programming: Deep C Secrets — Peter van der Linden
Best advanced companion for C’s traps and implementation details.
Expert C Programming: Deep C Secrets is for readers who already know C and want to understand complex declarations, pointers, arrays, memory behavior, compilers, linkers, and the less obvious corners of the language. It is often more memorable and entertaining than a formal reference, making it useful when debugging or trying to build better intuition.

If you have never programmed
Start with C Programming: A Modern Approach for the strongest all-around course. Choose C Primer Plus if you want a gentler pace and extensive review material. Do not choose K&R solely because it is famous; its concise style and assumed background can make the beginning harder than necessary.
If you already know another language
Choose Modern C, 3rd Edition if C23 and current practice are priorities. Choose K&R for a compact foundational tour, or King if you want a more methodical treatment of pointers, memory, and the standard library.
If you write production C
Learn the fundamentals from King or Modern C, then add Effective C. That combination is more useful than treating any single book as a complete guide to reliable software engineering.

A practical path is King or Modern C for language fundamentals, K&R for concise idioms and UNIX history, and Effective C for portability and reliability. The correct combination depends on the compiler, operating system, hardware, and coding standards used by your project.

If you want a reference
K&R is the most compact classic reference. Modern C is the better choice for current C23-oriented material. Neither C Primer Plus nor King’s book is primarily a quick reference, and Expert C Programming is a troubleshooting companion rather than a formal standard.
Do you need more than one book?
No. Most readers should buy one book first and add another only when their needs change:
- One-book beginner path: C Programming: A Modern Approach.
- Gentle beginner path: C Primer Plus.
- Modern two-book path: Modern C plus Effective C.
- Classic two-book path: K&R plus King’s book.
- Advanced path: any fundamentals book, then Effective C or Expert C Programming.
Before buying, verify the author, edition, ISBN, format, and stated standard coverage. Older books can teach durable concepts, but examples should be compiled with warnings and checked against current compiler and library documentation.

For most people, buy C Programming: A Modern Approach, 2nd Edition. Choose Modern C, 3rd Edition when current C23 coverage matters more than beginner-friendly pacing. Keep K&R for its concise classic treatment, use C Primer Plus for a slower introduction, add Effective C for professional practice, and read Expert C Programming when you are ready to investigate C’s deeper behavior.
