TerraMaster TOS 7 looks like a substantial upgrade to the company’s NAS operating system, but it is not yet possible to treat every headline feature as confirmed or generally available. TerraMaster has described a redesigned interface, centralized file management, remote file mounting, automatic ISO mounting, a unified recycle bin and a rebuilt indexing system. It also claims up to 10-times-faster search retrieval and a 120% improvement in search accuracy compared with TOS 6.
Those figures are vendor claims, not independent benchmark results. The most important unanswered question is what TerraMaster means by “online editing”: the available announcement coverage does not identify supported file formats, collaboration features, required applications or whether an external service is involved.
What TerraMaster announced
TerraMaster unveiled TOS 7 in late October 2025. Coverage published on November 3 described the software as preparing for internal testing, rather than as a finalized stable release. The report says TOS 7 is based on Linux kernel 6.12 and includes more than 50 new functions and approximately 1,000 optimizations.
That status matters. Internal testing is not the same as a public beta, release candidate or automatic upgrade. TerraMaster’s current website, download area and community forum should be used to confirm availability, supported models, installation instructions and release notes before upgrading.

The headline features
Online editing remains poorly defined
“Online editing” is prominent in the announcement’s headline, but the accessible report does not explain the feature sufficiently to establish what users can do.
It does not say whether TOS 7 will edit Microsoft Office files, OpenDocument files, PDFs, images, video, text or code directly in a browser. It also does not establish whether editing is single-user or collaborative, whether comments and simultaneous editing are supported, or whether users need Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, OnlyOffice, Collabora or another third-party service.
Buyers should therefore avoid treating the feature as a built-in Google Docs or Microsoft 365 replacement. Before relying on it, verify supported formats, browser requirements, file permissions, version history, file locking, remote-access behavior and whether files remain entirely on the NAS.

Faster search and redesigned indexing
TerraMaster says TOS 7’s new indexing system can deliver search retrieval up to 10 times faster than TOS 6, with search accuracy improved by 120%.
These are difficult claims to interpret without a test methodology. “Up to 10 times faster” could refer to particular hardware, library sizes or query types rather than everyday performance. Likewise, a 120% accuracy improvement cannot be evaluated without knowing the baseline, test corpus, false-positive rate and definition of accuracy.
The announcement does not specify whether indexing covers only filenames or also document text, metadata, image contents, video metadata and tags. It also does not explain whether users can exclude folders, whether results respect per-user permissions, whether remote mounts are indexed or whether an upgrade from TOS 6 requires a complete reindex.
A large first-time index may temporarily increase CPU, memory and disk activity, especially on older or low-memory NAS systems. Search speed may also depend more on the NAS processor, storage configuration and library size than on the operating system alone.

My Files centralizes file management
TOS 7 introduces a section called My Files, which TerraMaster describes as a centralized file-management area. The available report does not establish whether it replaces File Manager, provides a personal view across existing shares or combines local files with mounted remote storage.
Its relationship with search, sharing, permissions, recycle-bin recovery and applications also remains unclear. Those details will determine whether My Files is a meaningful workflow improvement or mainly a new navigation layer.
Remote file mounting and automatic ISO mounting
Remote file mounting should make another storage location accessible within the NAS interface. Automatic ISO mounting could make disc-image contents available without repeatedly mounting them manually.
However, TerraMaster has not identified the supported protocols, credential-storage model or whether remote mounts work only on a local network. Users also need to know whether mounted files can be edited, indexed, shared or backed up; whether mounts survive a reboot; and whether administrator privileges are required.

For ISO files, the important unknowns include supported image formats, whether mounted contents are read-only and when automatic mounting occurs. These features may be useful for home-lab and technical users, but the announcement does not provide enough operational detail to judge them fully.
Unified recycle bin
A unified recycle bin could simplify recovery across shared folders and applications. Its practical value depends on whether it covers all shares, synchronized folders, Photos, Drive and other application data.
Retention periods, storage limits, automatic purging, per-share settings and user permissions are also unspecified. A recycle bin is not a backup: it will not reliably protect against disk failure, ransomware, destruction of the NAS or permanent deletion.

The interface changes
TerraMaster says TOS 7 includes new desktop wallpapers, a cleaner navigation bar, a reorganized message center, redesigned icons and the ability to drag desktop icons into different positions. It also describes changes to core interaction logic.
The company claims a 60% increase in operational efficiency, but the accessible coverage provides no task list, benchmark or definition for that number. It is best treated as a marketing claim rather than a measured expectation.
The distinction is important: redesigned icons and wallpapers are cosmetic; a reorganized navigation bar may improve usability; faster search and remote mounting are functional changes; and lower latency or reduced resource use would be performance improvements. The announcement does not independently validate the latter.
What Linux kernel 6.12 means
A Linux 6.12 foundation may provide newer hardware support, driver improvements, security fixes, filesystem changes and networking improvements. It also gives TerraMaster a newer base for its own applications.
It does not automatically guarantee faster NAS performance or broader compatibility. TerraMaster’s integration, maintenance policy, device drivers and application packages still determine what users experience on a particular system.

TOS 7 could be significant for owners with large document or media libraries, families sharing files, small offices, home-lab users working with ISO images and anyone who frequently needs to access remote storage. A unified file view and better search could address daily usability problems more directly than an isolated new application.
Existing TOS 6 users should be more cautious if their NAS is mission-critical, runs third-party packages, has limited memory or cannot tolerate indexing-related downtime. Buyers who primarily need mature, real-time collaborative document editing should wait for TerraMaster to document the feature or use a dedicated cloud office platform.

Compatibility is still the deciding issue
No model-by-model TOS 7 compatibility matrix was available in the supplied coverage. TerraMaster has not yet established which CPU architectures, TNAS generations, ARM systems, Intel or AMD models and memory configurations are supported.
It is also unclear whether all models receive identical features, whether applications require separate updates, how RAID and volume migration are handled, or whether TOS 6 settings and packages migrate automatically. Do not buy a TerraMaster NAS solely because it is advertised as TOS 7-ready until the exact model appears in official documentation.

- Confirm the exact TOS 7 build and official support for your NAS model.
- Make a separate, tested backup of irreplaceable data.
- Export configuration and application settings where supported.
- Check RAID, disk and volume health before starting.
- Verify that third-party packages have compatible versions.
- Schedule downtime and use stable power or a UPS.
- Allow time for a possible index rebuild.
- Test users, shares, permissions, remote access and applications after the upgrade.
- Confirm that backup jobs still run successfully.
- Do not assume rollback is available until TerraMaster documents the procedure.
How TOS 7 compares with alternatives
Synology DSM may be a better fit for buyers prioritizing a mature appliance experience, file synchronization and collaboration applications. QNAP QTS and QuTS hero are relevant for users who want broad hardware choices, advanced networking, virtualization and containers, although they can require more configuration.
TrueNAS and Unraid offer more hardware flexibility and home-lab control, but they also shift more responsibility for hardware selection, maintenance and software configuration to the user. None of these alternatives should be judged by feature counts alone. Compare the actual workflow: search, file permissions, collaboration, backup, remote access, upgrades and recovery.
Verdict
TOS 7 appears to be a meaningful TerraMaster software overhaul focused on file management, indexing, search and everyday navigation. The Linux kernel update and features such as remote mounting, ISO mounting and a unified recycle bin may make it attractive to home-lab users and larger file-library owners.
But the strongest claims remain unproven. TerraMaster has not supplied enough detail in the available coverage to confirm what online editing includes, how much faster search is in real workloads, which NAS models are supported or whether TOS 7 is a stable public release. Existing owners should wait for official compatibility and upgrade documentation, while new buyers should choose hardware for their current workload and backup needs—not for an unverified “10-times-faster” promise.
