Yes—the GeForce RTX 5080 is generally slower than the RTX 4090 in raw rendering performance. The older 4090 usually leads in native 4K gaming and pulls further ahead in demanding ray-traced workloads. However, the 5080 is not a failed upgrade: it is newer, more power-efficient, supports DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation, and may be the more practical purchase when priced near its $999 launch MSRP.

The important distinction is between frames the GPU actually renders and additional frames generated by AI. DLSS 4 can make the RTX 5080 report a much higher displayed frame rate in supported games, but that does not change the underlying hardware performance hierarchy.

RTX 5080 vs. RTX 4090: the short answer

The RTX 4090 remains the faster graphics card in most serious apples-to-apples comparisons. Reviews from Ars Technica, Tom’s Hardware, GamersNexus and other outlets generally placed the RTX 5080 near, but below, the previous-generation flagship.

In 4K rasterized games, the cards can be close and some results may look effectively tied. With native rendering and demanding ray tracing, the RTX 4090 more consistently leads. The gap varies with the game, resolution, driver, settings, CPU and whether DLSS or frame generation is enabled, so there is no honest single percentage that describes every result.

Performance by workload

Workload Likely result
Native 4K rasterization Close, but the RTX 4090 often leads
4K ray tracing The RTX 4090 generally has a clearer advantage
DLSS Super Resolution The 5080 may narrow the gap, but the 4090 often remains faster
Conventional Frame Generation Both cards support it; compare base FPS and latency separately
DLSS Multi Frame Generation The 5080 can show much higher displayed FPS in supported games
VRAM-heavy workloads The 4090’s 24GB provides more headroom than the 5080’s 16GB

Digital Trends found the RTX 5080 could match the 4090 in some 4K rasterized tests but fell behind more clearly with ray tracing. TechRadar similarly reported a larger deficit in native 4K ray tracing, with DLSS reducing—but not necessarily eliminating—the difference.

Why the newer RTX 5080 loses to the older flagship

The RTX 4090 was the top-end card of the Ada Lovelace generation. The RTX 5080 is a high-end Blackwell card positioned below the RTX 5090. A newer architecture does not automatically make a lower-tier product faster than the previous generation’s flagship.

Specification RTX 5080 RTX 4090
Architecture Blackwell Ada Lovelace
CUDA cores 10,752 16,384
Video memory 16GB GDDR7 24GB GDDR6X
Memory interface 256-bit 384-bit
Memory bandwidth Approximately 960GB/s Approximately 1,008GB/s
Total graphics power 360W 450W
Recommended system power 850W 850W
Upscaling and frame generation DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation DLSS 3.5 and Frame Generation

These specifications come from Nvidia’s official RTX 5080 and RTX 4090 product pages. The 4090 has substantially more conventional shader capacity, a wider memory bus, more VRAM and a higher power ceiling. The 5080 counters with newer RT and Tensor cores, faster GDDR7 memory, newer media and display capabilities, and lower rated power consumption.

DLSS 4 does not make the 5080 a faster raw GPU

Nvidia’s DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation can insert multiple AI-generated frames between traditionally rendered frames. That can substantially increase the number shown by an FPS counter, but it should not be confused with equivalent native rendering performance.

  • Quad-fan design boosts air flow and pressure by up to 20%. Compatibility: 357mm (14.1") length, 3.8 slots, 6.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
  • Patented vapor chamber with milled heatspreader for lower GPU temperatures OC mode: 2790 MHz/ Default mode: 2760 MHz (Boost Clock)
  • Phase-change GPU thermal pad ensures optimal heat transfer, lowering GPU temperatures for enhanced performance and reliability
  • 3.8-slot design: massive heatsink and fin array optimized for airflow from the four Axial-tech fans
  • Rendered FPS: Frames produced through conventional game rendering.
  • Upscaled FPS: Rendered frames reconstructed to a higher output resolution.
  • Generated FPS: Additional frames synthesized by AI.
  • Latency: How quickly the game responds to input.
  • Image quality: Whether motion, UI elements and fine detail remain clean.

A fair comparison tests both cards with the same native or DLSS Super Resolution settings, then evaluates Multi Frame Generation separately. Generated frames can improve smoothness, but they do not provide the same responsiveness as additional conventionally rendered frames and can introduce artifacts or latency trade-offs. Support is also game-dependent.

VRAM may matter more than a small average-FPS gap

The RTX 4090 has 24GB of VRAM, while the RTX 5080 has 16GB. Sixteen gigabytes remains adequate for many current games, including many 4K setups, but the 4090 has more long-term headroom for high-resolution textures, mods, heavy ray tracing and demanding creator applications.

Tom’s Hardware highlighted titles such as The Last of Us Part I and Stalker 2 as examples where VRAM pressure can become relevant. The difference is also important for local AI image-generation workloads, large 3D scenes and projects that exceed 16GB. It does not mean that every 4K game currently requires 24GB.

Power, cooling and compatibility

Nvidia rates the RTX 5080 at 360W total graphics power and the RTX 4090 at 450W. Both reference specifications recommend an 850W system power supply. Actual requirements depend on the processor, drives, overclocking and the specific add-in-board model.

  • Powered by GeForce RTX 5080

  • PCIe 5.0
  • WINDFORCE cooling system

Partner cards can be substantially larger than reference designs, so check the exact card’s length, thickness, slot usage, power connector clearance and case support. A newer ATX 3.x power supply with suitable PCIe support is a sensible consideration for either card, particularly in a high-end system.

Price changes the recommendation

The RTX 5080 launched at $999, with availability announced for January 30, 2025, while the RTX 4090 launched at $1,599 in 2022. Those are historical launch prices, not reliable September 2026 street prices.

As a price signal, PC Gamer reported a PNY RTX 5080 listed at $1,289.99 at Best Buy on August 14, 2026. That was a retailer listing rather than a guaranteed current checkout price. A 4090’s current price also needs to be checked live because older high-end cards can be scarce, used, or unusually expensive. Compare the actual price, warranty, condition and return policy before deciding.

Who should buy which card?

Choose the RTX 5080 when:

  • You are building a new system and find it near its $999 launch MSRP.
  • You want DLSS 4 and Multi Frame Generation in supported games.
  • You value lower rated power consumption and a newer warranty.
  • You mainly play games where DLSS 4 is well supported.
  • You do not need more than 16GB of VRAM.

Choose or keep the RTX 4090 when:

  • You want the highest native or ray-traced 4K performance between these two cards.
  • You need 24GB of VRAM for games, AI, rendering or creator work.
  • The 4090 and 5080 are similarly priced.
  • You already own the 4090 and are considering the 5080 as an upgrade.
  • You prefer not to depend on generated frames for performance.

Existing RTX 4090 owners

The RTX 5080 is usually not a worthwhile performance upgrade from a 4090. Moving to it would primarily provide newer features, lower rated power use and a new product warranty, while raw performance could remain similar or regress. A 4090 owner seeking a clear performance jump should compare higher-tier current-generation options instead.

Creators, AI users and professionals

Do not assume gaming benchmarks predict professional results. CUDA applications, Blender, video encoding, local AI models and other creator workloads can respond differently to architecture, VRAM capacity and software support. For these users, the 4090’s 24GB capacity may be more important than the 5080’s newer gaming features.

How to read RTX 5080 versus RTX 4090 benchmarks

Trust comparisons that disclose the resolution, game settings, driver version, CPU, memory, graphics card model and whether DLSS or frame generation was enabled. Be cautious when a review:

  • Uses DLSS on one card but not the other.
  • Compares Multi Frame Generation with native output.
  • Reports only average FPS without frame times or 1% lows.
  • Tests mostly at 1080p, where CPU limits can hide GPU differences.
  • Mixes ray-traced and rasterized results into one average.
  • Uses different partner-card power limits without explaining them.

The most useful question is not simply “Which card has the higher FPS?” It is “Which card produces the better combination of rendered performance, latency, image quality, VRAM capacity, power use and price for my games?”
