A driverless Waymo vehicle was filmed traveling against traffic on an Interstate 35 frontage road in Austin, Texas, on December 15, 2025. The video appears to show the vehicle moving toward oncoming motorists before turning into a nearby gas station. No injury or collision was reported in the available coverage, and Waymo has not publicly identified a technical cause.
What the video shows
The short clip, recorded by the wife of Reddit user @holafromaustin, appears to show a driverless Waymo approaching on the opposing side of a one-way frontage road. Other motorists slow or stop as the vehicle comes toward them.
According to Futurism’s description of the footage, the Waymo briefly displayed emergency lights, then activated a turn signal before turning into a gas station. Because the circulating video is short, it does not establish what happened immediately beforehand or why the vehicle entered the opposing side of the road.

When and where did it happen?
The incident occurred on Monday, December 15, 2025, on an I-35 frontage road near downtown Austin. Local reporting placed it near the Valero station at 900 N. I-35, close to East Ninth Street.

Calling it an I-35 frontage-road incident is important. Frontage roads can have unusual access points, ramps, turn lanes and temporary traffic patterns, so the clip should not be treated as a complete view of the surrounding road layout.
Was the Waymo actually driving the wrong way?
Yes, the available reporting supports describing the vehicle as traveling against normal traffic on a one-way frontage road. The most precise wording is that the video appeared to show a driverless Waymo traveling against traffic.

That does not, by itself, prove that the vehicle malfunctioned, was hacked, intentionally took an illegal shortcut or made a specific legal violation under Texas law. The public footage shows the apparent road position and direction, not the vehicle’s internal decision-making.

The statement did not explain whether the event involved mapping, routing, road markings, an obstruction, perception or another factor. The available coverage also does not establish whether Waymo reviewed vehicle logs or made a software or operational change in response.
Was anyone hurt?
No injury or collision connected to this specific wrong-way episode was reported in the available accounts. Austin police and the city’s Transportation and Public Works Department told MySA they had received no report concerning the incident.

The absence of a reported collision or official complaint does not mean the situation was harmless. It only describes what was documented in the cited coverage.

MySA reported that Austin’s autonomous-vehicle dashboard listed 118 reported Waymo incidents during 2025 as of December 16. The categories included 43 safety concerns, 20 reports of blocking traffic, 20 reports of passing school buses with active stop signs, 17 nuisances, 10 reports of allegedly ignoring Austin police directions, five near misses and three collisions.

Those figures are reports, not automatically confirmed violations or proof that every event was caused by the autonomous-driving system. They were also a time-specific count and should not be treated as a current fleet total.
Separate Austin reporting discussed alleged school-bus violations and later federal scrutiny. Those incidents should not be used to explain the December 15 wrong-way episode; they involve different events.
What remains unknown
- Why the vehicle entered the opposing side of the frontage road.
- Whether an obstruction, emergency scene, road marking or temporary traffic condition contributed.
- Whether the vehicle was attempting a particular maneuver before reaching the gas station.
- Whether Waymo’s internal review found a software, mapping, routing or operational issue.
Bottom line
The video documents an apparent wrong-way episode involving a driverless Waymo on an Austin I-35 frontage road. It is a serious safety incident, but the clip and public statements do not establish its technical cause or demonstrate a fleet-wide defect.
