To add and manage Discord roles, open Server Settings → Roles, create a role, give it only the permissions it needs, place it correctly in the hierarchy, assign it to members, and test the result. You must own the server or have Manage Roles; that permission still cannot control roles equal to or above your highest role.
What Discord roles do
A Discord role is a reusable bundle of permissions, channel-access rules, and display settings. A member can have multiple roles. Their effective access comes from @everyone, assigned roles, and channel-specific overrides.
Roles are different from permissions. A permission is an individual ability, such as sending messages or banning members. A role groups permissions and can also provide a name, color, member-list grouping, and position in the server hierarchy. Color is primarily visual: the highest-positioned colored role a member has determines the color Discord displays.

Before creating a role
- The server owner can manage server roles without assigning themselves a special role.
- Other users normally need Manage Roles.
- Manage Roles only applies to roles below the manager’s highest role.
- A bot also needs the required permission and must be positioned above every role it needs to assign.
- Avoid Administrator unless unrestricted control is genuinely necessary. Discord says it grants all permissions and bypasses channel restrictions.
Discord’s labels and controls can vary slightly between desktop, browser, iOS, Android, and staged interface rollouts. The stable destination is Server Settings → Roles.
How to create a Discord role on desktop or browser
- Open the server.
- Click the server name or dropdown in the upper-left corner.
- Select Server Settings.
- Open Roles.
- Select Create Role or the add-role control.
- Enter a name and configure the display settings.
- Open Permissions and enable only the permissions the role requires.
- Save the role.

Choose a clear name
Name a role for its purpose, such as Moderator, Verified, Event Host, Subscriber, Game: Minecraft, or Read-Only. Do not call a role Admin if it does not have administrative authority; misleading names make permission mistakes more likely.

Configure appearance
You can usually choose a color and, where available, display the role as a separate member-list group. These are presentation features, not extra authority. Optional role icons and enhanced styles should also be treated as visual features. Discord says Enhanced Role Styles, including gradient and holographic styles, require three Server Boosts and work on desktop and mobile; they are not required for normal role management.

Give a role only the permissions it needs
Use least privilege: start with no elevated permissions, add the smallest set required, and prefer channel-specific access over broad server-wide authority.

Changing a role changes the experience for every member who has it. Review copied roles carefully, especially for Administrator, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Ban Members, Kick Members, and other high-impact permissions.

How to assign a role to a member
From a member profile
- Open the member’s server profile, usually by selecting their avatar or name.
- Find the Roles section.
- Select the add-role or plus control.
- Choose the role.
- Close or save the panel if Discord prompts you.
From the Members page
On supported desktop and browser interfaces:
- Open Server Settings → User Management → Members for a non-Community server, or the server’s Members page where applicable.
- Locate the member.
- Hover over the Roles area and select the plus button.
- Check the role to add it.
Discord’s current documentation says the Members management page is available on browser and desktop, not as a universal mobile feature. See the Members page guide.

Remove a role
Open the member’s role list, then uncheck or remove the role. The role’s permissions and channel access are removed immediately unless the member receives the same access from another role or a direct channel override.
How to edit and reorder roles
To edit a role, go to Server Settings → Roles, select it, change its name, appearance, or permissions, and save. Test the result afterward because the change affects all members assigned to that role.
Roles are listed from highest to lowest. New roles start near the bottom, immediately above @everyone. Drag a role to move it. A user generally cannot edit, assign, moderate, or move a role equal to or above their highest role.

Do not place a bot above staff roles unless there is a deliberate security reason.

Use roles to control private channels
Server-wide permissions do not automatically guarantee access to every channel. Category and channel overrides can change the result.
To create a role-exclusive channel:
- Right-click the channel and choose Edit Channel → Permissions.
- Enable the private-channel option, or remove View Channel from
@everyone. - Add the permitted role.
- Grant View Channel and any required text or voice permissions.
- Save the changes.
Category permissions can be inherited by channels. A synced channel follows category permission changes; a channel with custom overrides becomes unsynced and may not receive later category changes. Discord describes this behavior in its permissions setup FAQ.
Test a role before relying on it
Use View Server As Role where available:
- Open the server menu.
- Go to Server Settings → Roles.
- Select the role.
- Choose View Server As Role from the role controls or display area.
- Check the channels and categories the role can see, plus the management options it exposes.
- Exit the preview when finished.
Discord says this feature is available to server owners and members with Administrator. It does not model every user-specific voice restriction, such as suppression or priority speaker. Test both expected access and expected denial, ideally in a private test channel and with a non-administrator test account. More details are available in Discord’s View Server As Role guide.
Managing roles on mobile
Mobile apps may provide controls for editing roles and assigning them through member profiles, but the exact layout depends on the current iOS or Android version and Discord’s interface rollout. Do not assume the desktop Members-page workflow is available on mobile. For reliable bulk member management, use Discord in a browser or on desktop.

Automated roles with bots, apps, and Linked Roles
Bots and apps
Apps can automate self-assignable interest roles, verification roles, button or reaction roles, subscriber roles, temporary roles, and integration-based assignments. Review the authorization screen carefully, grant only the permissions required, and put the app’s role above only the roles it must manage.
Review installed apps at Server Settings → Integrations → Bots and Apps. Remove unused apps and periodically inspect their permissions. Discord’s documentation covers app permissions and the Server Integrations page. Bot commands are vendor-specific; use the selected bot’s official documentation rather than assuming a command such as /role will work.
Linked Roles
Linked Roles are a separate feature for gating access based on connected accounts or app conditions. The documented setup path is Server Settings → Roles → Create new role → Links. Configure the connection requirements, then add the Linked Role to the relevant channel permissions. Members must meet all configured requirements. Discord’s administrator FAQ says Linked Roles cannot currently be set up on mobile.
Common Discord role problems and fixes

| Role suddenly has too much power | Administrator or another broad permission was enabled | Disable dangerous permissions, review role assignments and audit history, and check Integrations. |
| Mobile option is missing | The feature is desktop-only or the interface differs by rollout | Use a browser or desktop, particularly for the Members page and Linked Role setup. |
When diagnosing access, check in this order: confirm the member has the intended role; check the manager’s or bot’s highest role; inspect the target role’s permissions; inspect category and channel overrides; then use View Server As Role or a test account.
