You can add Quick Note access to an iPhone or iPad Lock Screen, but Apple Notes is not normally a full, editable note widget displayed directly on the Lock Screen. Quick Note opens a fast capture screen; for a persistent memo that remains visible, you need a compatible third-party widget or a static wallpaper.
Add Quick Note to the iPhone Lock Screen
- Wake your iPhone and go to the Lock Screen.
- Touch and hold the Lock Screen, then tap Customize.
- Choose Lock Screen.
- Tap one of the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen.
- Remove an existing control if both spaces are occupied.
- Tap Add a Control, search for Quick Note, and select it.
- Tap Done.
To use it, wake the iPhone and tap the Quick Note control. Depending on your device and privacy settings, you may be asked to authenticate. Enter text, use dictation, or add other supported content, then tap Save or Done.
Apple’s Lock Screen control guide notes that the available controls can vary by iPhone model, software version, region, and configuration. Search the complete control gallery rather than expecting Quick Note to appear immediately.
Find the note afterward
Open Notes and look for the Quick Notes folder. Quick Notes can contain text, links, images, tags, and mentions. They can also sync between iPhone, iPad, and Mac when iCloud Notes and the relevant Notes account are configured correctly, as described in Apple’s Quick Notes documentation.

If you move a Quick Note to another folder, it becomes a regular note and no longer appears in Quick Notes. A Quick Note cannot be locked while it remains in the Quick Notes folder; move it first, then use Notes’ locking option.
Add Quick Note to Control Center
Control Center is the most useful fallback if Quick Note is not available in the Lock Screen control gallery.
On iPhone
- Open Control Center by swiping down from the top-right corner on Face ID models, or swiping up from the bottom edge on iPhones with a Home button.
- Tap the Add button if it appears.
- Tap Add a Control.
- Select Quick Note.

On iPad
- Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap the Add button, if shown.
- Choose Add a Control.
- Select Quick Note.

Use Notes from the iPad Lock Screen
iPad has a setting that controls what happens when you invoke Notes from the Lock Screen:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Notes.
- Tap Access Notes from Lock Screen.
- Choose Always Create New Note, Resume Last Note, or turn the feature off.
Resume Last Note is useful if you regularly return to one ongoing note. Always Create New Note is safer when each Lock Screen capture should remain separate. This setting controls Lock Screen note access; it does not expose your entire Notes library while the iPad is locked. Apple’s current instructions are available in its iPad Notes settings guide.

Write with Apple Pencil on a locked iPad
On compatible iPad models and configurations, wake the iPad and tap or touch the Lock Screen with Apple Pencil to start a Quick Note. Begin writing or drawing, then save or finish the note as prompted.
This is particularly useful for sketches, classroom notes, signatures, diagrams, and handwritten reminders. It is a Quick Note capture route—not a permanent Apple Notes page embedded in the Lock Screen. iPad also supports Quick Note through Control Center, supported app share sheets, and the Globe-Q shortcut with an external keyboard, subject to Apple’s compatibility requirements.
Can you display an existing Apple Note on the Lock Screen?
Not through Apple’s standard Notes workflow as a conventional full-length, editable Lock Screen note. Quick Note is designed for rapid capture, while Apple’s Lock Screen widgets are glanceable app-provided surfaces rather than unrestricted access to any chosen Notes document. Choose the solution that matches your goal:
- Quick Note: Best for capturing a thought immediately and keeping it in Apple Notes.
- Reminders: Better for actionable checklists and tasks that you want to see or interact with quickly.
- Third-party memo widget: Best for a selected memo, sticky note, large text, or checklist that remains visible between unlocks.
- Text wallpaper: Works without another app, but is static, inconvenient to update, and unsuitable for confidential information.
Third-party Lock Screen note widgets
If persistent visibility matters more than native Apple Notes integration, App Store apps such as Sticky Notes – Widget Memo Pad, StickyNote: Home Screen Notes, Sticky Notes Widget, and Widget Notes Home Lock Screen advertise Lock Screen memo or photo widgets. Features, compatibility, subscriptions, and prices can change, so check the current listing before installing.

Troubleshoot missing or inaccessible Quick Note
Quick Note is missing from the Lock Screen gallery
- Confirm that you are editing the active Lock Screen, not another saved Lock Screen.
- Remove an existing bottom control and search the full gallery again.
- Add Quick Note to Control Center instead.
- Check Settings > General > Software Update.
- Restart the iPhone or iPad if the control gallery appears incomplete.
Older software, device differences, managed-device restrictions, and regional availability can affect which controls appear. Do not assume every iPhone exposes the same Lock Screen controls.

That can be expected. Lock Screen access is convenient, but it can also expose information. Review the available Lock Screen access permissions under Settings > Face ID & Passcode or Settings > Touch ID & Passcode, depending on your iPhone. Apple explains these privacy controls in its Lock Screen access guide.
The note is not in the usual Notes folder
Check the Quick Notes folder, Recently Deleted, your default Notes account, iCloud Notes, and other enabled accounts such as Gmail or Exchange. The iPad Notes settings page explains how Notes accounts and the default account are managed.

You want one permanent ongoing note
On iPad, try Settings > Apps > Notes > Access Notes from Lock Screen > Resume Last Note. Once the note becomes a long-term document, move it to a regular folder. On iPhone, do not assume every Quick Note invocation appends to one fixed document; behavior and available settings can vary. A Shortcuts workflow that opens or appends to a chosen note is possible, but it requires separate setup.
Privacy reminder
Anything displayed on a Lock Screen can potentially be seen by someone nearby, including third-party widget content and text in a wallpaper. Avoid placing passwords, financial information, private addresses, or sensitive work notes there. For sensitive material, use Quick Note capture and keep the note protected inside Notes rather than displaying it persistently.
