For two Windows installations, the best choice is usually Windows Boot Manager with Microsoft’s built-in bcdboot tool. For Windows and Linux, choose Grub2Win if you want a Windows-based graphical setup, or use your Linux distribution’s GRUB or systemd-boot. For advanced UEFI multiboot systems, rEFInd is the stronger option. EasyBCD is best treated as a convenient Windows BCD editor rather than a universal bootloader.

These tools operate at different layers. A boot manager presents choices and starts an operating-system bootloader. A bootloader loads the operating system. Windows Boot Manager uses the Windows Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store; GRUB and rEFInd are independent boot environments. Microsoft documents the relationship between UEFI firmware, Windows Boot Manager and BCD in its BCD and UEFI documentation.
Do you need third-party software?
Windows plus Windows
Usually not. After installing the second Windows version on another partition or drive, Windows Boot Manager can display both installations. If one is missing, open an elevated Command Prompt and identify the Windows volume:
diskpart
list volume
exitThen add the installation, replacing D: with the correct drive letter:

bcdboot D:WindowsDrive letters can change in Windows Recovery Environment, so do not assume the second installation is always D:. Microsoft’s documented dual-boot repair procedure explains this process.
Use bcdedit /enum to list BCD entries. For basic graphical changes to the default system and timeout, run msconfig. BCDEdit requires administrator privileges and boot-option changes can interact with BitLocker and Secure Boot.
Windows plus Linux
You can use Grub2Win or another Windows-side tool, but the Linux installer’s native GRUB or systemd-boot is often the better-integrated solution. A third-party manager is useful when you specifically want to configure the menu from Windows, combine several boot environments, or use a particular layout.

Check firmware mode before choosing a tool
Press Win + R, enter msinfo32, and check BIOS Mode. The result is normally UEFI or Legacy.
- UEFI systems normally use GPT disks and EFI boot files.
- Legacy BIOS systems normally use MBR boot code.
“BIOS” is commonly used as a generic term for PC firmware, but UEFI and legacy BIOS are technically different. Install both operating systems in the same mode where possible. Installing one in UEFI mode and the other in legacy mode can prevent the expected boot menu from appearing.
Grub2Win’s official site claims support for Windows 7 through Windows 11 and both UEFI and traditional BIOS/MBR systems; those are vendor compatibility claims, not a guarantee for every distribution or hardware configuration. See its official site and supported operating-system list.

1. Windows Boot Manager: best for Windows-to-Windows dual boot
Windows Boot Manager is the lowest-risk choice for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7 installations that share a PC. It is included with Windows, uses the native BCD store, and can be repaired from Windows installation media or Windows Recovery Environment.

It is also possible for a firmware change, Windows repair, or another operating-system installation to alter which boot entry starts first.
Verdict: Use it by default for two Windows versions. Installing third-party software adds complexity without solving a problem you have not got.
2. Grub2Win: best Windows-based choice for Windows and Linux
Grub2Win provides a Windows-based graphical workflow for installing and configuring GRUB. Its official documentation says it supports Windows 7 through Windows 11, UEFI and BIOS systems, and booting Windows, Linux and other operating systems.
It is more appropriate than EasyBCD when Linux is a central part of the setup. However, encrypted disks, unusual filesystems, separate EFI System Partitions, kernel changes and Secure Boot can still require manual troubleshooting. Vendor compatibility claims should not be interpreted as independent testing of every distribution.
Verdict: The best fit for Windows-first users who want a graphical GRUB configuration tool.

3. EasyBCD: best graphical BCD editor
EasyBCD, from NeoSmart Technologies, provides a GUI for viewing, adding, renaming, reordering and deleting Windows boot entries. It can change the default entry and timeout, and its documentation covers BCD backup and restoration, Windows versions, Linux and BSD scenarios, UEFI and legacy configurations.
It is primarily a Windows BCD administration tool. Linux entries may depend on chainloading or additional bootloader configuration, so EasyBCD should not be presented as equivalent to a Linux distribution’s native bootloader or to rEFInd’s independent UEFI menu. Consult the official documentation and product page for current capabilities and licensing.
Verdict: A convenient choice for straightforward BCD editing, especially if you prefer a GUI to bcdedit.
4. rEFInd: best advanced UEFI boot manager
rEFInd is designed for UEFI systems and can automatically detect EFI bootloaders and Linux kernels. That can reduce the need to rewrite a central menu after every kernel update. Its graphical, icon-based menu is especially useful on systems with several Linux distributions, Windows installations, recovery environments or separate drives.
rEFInd is not intended for legacy BIOS systems. Secure Boot may require a signed shim, PreLoader, locally signed binaries or enrolled keys. Its Secure Boot documentation explains the alternatives. Automatic detection can also create duplicate or unwanted entries that need to be hidden through configuration.
Verdict: Excellent for technically confident users with UEFI multiboot systems; unnecessarily complex for a basic Windows dual boot.

5. Native GRUB or systemd-boot: best Linux-integrated option
For a conventional Windows-and-Linux installation, let the Linux distribution install and manage its own bootloader. GRUB commonly detects Windows during installation, while systemd-boot can provide a clean UEFI-native setup on distributions that support it.
This approach usually fits Linux kernel updates and distribution-managed Secure Boot better than an extra Windows-side utility. Windows updates or repairs can still change the firmware boot order, and encrypted or unusual layouts may require distribution-specific repair steps.
6. BootIt Bare Metal: advanced paid alternative
BootIt Bare Metal combines boot management with partition-management functions and supports detailed boot-item configuration. It may suit technicians managing complex partitions and multiple drives, but it is overkill for ordinary dual boot. Because partition mistakes can cause data loss, create a verified backup and recovery plan before using it. Its official manual documents its boot and BCD capabilities.
Prepare before installing or changing a boot manager
- Back up important files and verify that the backup can be restored.
- Create or test Windows recovery media or installation USB.
- Save the BitLocker recovery key somewhere accessible.
- Check BIOS Mode in
msinfo32. - Install both operating systems in the same firmware mode where possible.
- Use unallocated space, a separate partition or a separate physical drive; never install two systems into the same Windows partition.
- Suspend BitLocker before major boot, firmware or partition changes, then resume it after testing both systems.
- Disable Windows Fast Startup if Linux will access Windows NTFS volumes. Fully shut Windows down rather than relying on hibernation.
- Download installers and recovery utilities from official sources.
Windows Recovery Environment provides Startup Repair, firmware-settings access and other recovery tools. Microsoft’s Windows Recovery Environment guidance also covers BitLocker recovery.

Secure Boot allows only trusted, digitally signed startup software to run. A third-party EFI binary that is unsigned or not trusted by the firmware may fail to start while Secure Boot is enabled. Some Linux distributions use a signed shim; other configurations require signing binaries or enrolling a custom key. Microsoft’s overview of Windows 11 and Secure Boot explains the security model.

Changing EFI boot files, firmware settings or the boot chain can cause BitLocker to request its recovery key. This is a protection mechanism, not necessarily evidence that Windows is damaged. Confirm that the recovery key is available and suspend protection before significant changes. Do not delete EFI partitions or disable security features permanently just to make a boot menu work.

Microsoft has also announced Secure Boot certificate changes beginning in 2026. For long-term installations, verify that the firmware, Linux distribution and boot manager use a current trusted signing path; see Microsoft’s certificate guidance.
Repair a missing boot option
- Open the firmware’s one-time boot menu and try selecting Windows Boot Manager or the Linux boot entry directly.
- If Windows starts, inspect the boot configuration with
bcdedit /enum. - If a Windows installation is missing, use
diskpart,list volumeandbcdboot D:Windowswith the correct Windows volume. - If Windows will not start, boot Windows installation media, press Shift + F10 for Command Prompt, and use the same identification and repair process.
- Try Startup Repair in Windows Recovery Environment.
- Restore the intended firmware boot order only after identifying which EFI System Partition contains the required loader.
Do not randomly delete EFI partitions or run legacy bootrec commands without first determining whether the system uses UEFI/GPT or legacy BIOS/MBR. Repairing the Windows BCD is different from repairing a Linux GRUB installation or merely changing firmware boot order.
Common problems
Windows starts instead of Linux
The Linux installation may still be present. Check the UEFI boot order and the firmware’s one-time boot menu before reinstalling GRUB or deleting anything. A firmware or Windows repair operation may simply have placed Windows Boot Manager first.

Linux was installed after Windows but does not appear
Confirm that both systems use the same firmware mode. If Linux was installed in UEFI mode and Windows in legacy mode, or vice versa, one bootloader may not detect the other. Also check whether the Linux installer used the expected EFI System Partition.
Several duplicate entries appear
Automatic detection can display multiple Windows Boot Manager entries, recovery loaders, fallback kernels or loaders from different drives. Hide unwanted menu entries through the manager’s configuration; do not delete the underlying operating system or EFI partition unless you have positively identified it.
Windows 7 or Windows 8 is involved
A software page claiming support for Windows 7 or Windows 8 means the application may technically run; it does not mean those operating systems remain secure, supported by Microsoft or compatible with modern hardware. Windows 7 and 8 may also lack drivers for newer storage controllers, firmware and graphics hardware. Grub2Win and EasyBCD document support for older Windows versions, but those claims should be separated from operating-system support status.
Windows 10 reached end of free security support on October 14, 2025. In 2026, dual-booting Windows 10 may be technically possible, but readers should understand the security implications. See Microsoft’s recovery and support guidance.
When dual boot is the wrong solution
- Virtual machine: Best when you need occasional access to another operating system without rebooting.
- Windows Subsystem for Linux: Convenient for Linux command-line tools and development, but not a replacement for Linux hardware access or every desktop workload.
- Separate SSDs: Simplifies partitioning and makes physical replacement easier, although firmware boot order still matters.
- Live USB: Useful for testing or occasional recovery without installing an operating system.
- Another computer or remote access: Preferable when the second OS needs dedicated hardware or you cannot risk altering the primary machine.
Which one should you choose?
- Two Windows versions: Windows Boot Manager and
bcdboot. - Windows plus Linux and you want a Windows GUI: Grub2Win.
- Basic BCD editing: EasyBCD.
- Several UEFI operating systems: rEFInd.
- Linux-first installation: The distribution’s GRUB or systemd-boot.
- Complex partition and boot administration: BootIt Bare Metal.
The safest choice is the smallest tool that solves the actual problem. Preserve Windows recovery media, keep the BitLocker key available, and treat firmware mode, Secure Boot and the EFI System Partition as part of the setup—not as optional details.
