AMD announced seven desktop processors on March 15, 2022, but they did not all reach stores on the same day. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D became available globally on April 20 at a $449 launch price, while the six lower-priced Ryzen processors were expected on April 4.

The 5800X3D was the gaming-focused flagship, using AMD’s new 3D V-Cache technology. The remaining chips expanded the older AM4 platform from eight-core mainstream systems down to inexpensive four-core options.

The launch timeline

  • January 2022: AMD previewed the Ryzen 7 5800X3D at CES.
  • March 15, 2022: AMD formally announced all seven processors.
  • April 4, 2022: The Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 5 5500, Ryzen 5 4600G, Ryzen 5 4500, and Ryzen 3 4100 were expected to become available.
  • April 20, 2022: Global retail availability began for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D.

Therefore, saying that all seven processors “launched April 20” is misleading. April 20 was specifically the 5800X3D’s retail launch date. AMD’s official announcement gives the launch timing and suggested prices.

The chip’s defining feature was 3D V-Cache: additional cache stacked onto the processor package to reduce the need to fetch data from slower system memory. AMD positioned the 5800X3D as a leading gaming processor, particularly at 1080p in selected titles and test configurations. That claim should not be read as a universal advantage in every game, resolution, application, or comparison.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 8-core, 16-Thread Desktop Processor with AMD 3D V-Cache Technology
  • The world's fastest gaming desktop processor and first gaming processor with 3D stacking technology
  • 8 Cores and 16 processing threads with AMD 3D V-Cache technology
  • 4.5 GHz Max Boost, 100 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
  • For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
  • Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended

Independent reviews found that the large cache could deliver substantial gaming gains, but the processor also had trade-offs. It lacked integrated graphics, cost more than ordinary Ryzen 7 models at launch, and did not support conventional CPU overclocking. AMD’s product page also states that no thermal solution was included and recommends liquid cooling for optimal operation.

The 5800X3D was most compelling for an existing AM4 owner with DDR4 memory, a compatible motherboard, and a capable discrete graphics card. Such a buyer could gain a major gaming upgrade without replacing the motherboard and memory.

How the six cheaper CPUs differed

Ryzen 7 5700X

The 5700X offered eight cores and 16 threads like the 5800X3D, but without 3D V-Cache. Its 65 W TDP was substantially lower than the 5800X3D’s 105 W rating. It was aimed at buyers who wanted strong general-purpose and multithreaded performance rather than the 5800X3D’s gaming-focused cache, and it still required a discrete graphics card.

  • AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included

Ryzen 5 5600

The six-core, 12-thread Ryzen 5 5600 was the most significant value-oriented addition. It combined Zen 3, PCIe 4.0, and 35 MB of cache at a $199 launch SEP. For many AM4 owners, it was the sensible upgrade when gaming and everyday performance mattered but the 5800X3D’s premium was difficult to justify.

Ryzen 5 5500

The 5500 looked similar to the 5600 by name and core count, but it was not simply a slower version of the same design. Its Cezanne-derived silicon had 19 MB of cache and PCIe 3.0, compared with 35 MB and PCIe 4.0 for the 5600. It also lacked integrated graphics, despite being derived from an APU design.

That cache and connectivity difference could matter in a gaming build or one using fast PCIe storage. The 5500 made sense only when its lower price outweighed those limitations.

Ryzen 5 4600G

The 4600G was the only one of these six mainstream additions with integrated Radeon graphics. It could run a basic desktop without a discrete graphics card, making it fundamentally different from the similarly priced Ryzen 5 4500 and Ryzen 5 5500.

It used Zen 2 and PCIe 3.0, so it was better suited to inexpensive office, home, and light-gaming systems than to a high-end discrete-GPU build.

Ryzen 5 4500

The 4500 provided six Zen 2 cores and 12 threads at a lower launch price, but had no integrated graphics and only PCIe 3.0. A discrete GPU was mandatory. Its value depended heavily on its actual street price relative to newer six-core processors.

Ryzen 3 4100

The entry-level 4100 had four Zen 2 cores and eight threads. It was intended for low-cost systems, but its lack of integrated graphics is easy to overlook. The total build therefore needs a discrete GPU, and the processor should be evaluated against the cost of the complete system rather than its $99 launch price alone.

Which processors included graphics?

Only the Ryzen 5 4600G included integrated Radeon graphics. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Ryzen 7 5700X, Ryzen 5 5600, Ryzen 5 5500, Ryzen 5 4500, and Ryzen 3 4100 all required a discrete graphics card.

AM4 compatibility and BIOS checks

All seven processors used AMD’s AM4 platform and DDR4 memory. The 5800X3D’s official support list includes X570, X470, B550, B450, and A520 platforms, but actual support depends on the motherboard manufacturer and BIOS version. AMD also announced expanded Ryzen 5000 support for selected X370, B350, and A320 boards through vendor BIOS updates.

That does not mean every AM4 board supports every processor. Before upgrading, check:

Which chip was right for each buyer?

Existing AM4 gaming PC

The 5800X3D was the premium upgrade when the system already had DDR4 memory, a compatible board, adequate cooling, and a sufficiently powerful GPU. Its biggest advantage was extending an existing platform without the cost of a new motherboard and memory kit.

Existing AM4 general-purpose system

The Ryzen 5 5600 was the strongest value-oriented choice among the new processors for many users. The Ryzen 7 5700X was more appropriate for heavier multithreaded workloads or buyers who wanted eight cores without paying for the 5800X3D’s gaming specialization.

New budget gaming build with a discrete GPU

Compare the 5600, 5500, 4500, and 4100 by total system cost. The 5600’s PCIe 4.0 support and larger cache made it more attractive than the 5500 when the price difference was modest. The 5500, 4500, or 4100 could work when the budget was extremely constrained and the system already included a discrete GPU.

Buying a new platform

The 5800X3D’s value was clearest as an upgrade, not as an automatic recommendation for a new build. A new buyer should compare the complete AM4 cost—including motherboard, DDR4 memory, cooling, and a required GPU—with newer platform options. The CPU’s historical gaming performance does not by itself make the older platform the best current purchase.

What the launch meant

The March 2022 announcement served two purposes. The 5800X3D showed how AMD could use 3D V-Cache to extend the gaming life of Zen 3, while the 5700X, 5600, 5500, 4600G, 4500, and 4100 filled price points across the established AM4 range.

The lineup was also more architecturally varied than the Ryzen branding suggested: the 5700X and 5600 were conventional Zen 3 desktop parts; the 5500 used Cezanne-derived Zen 3 silicon with less cache and PCIe 3.0; and the 4600G, 4500, and 4100 were Zen 2-based. Understanding those differences is more useful than comparing model numbers alone.
