The iPhone 17e did not receive the rumored iPhone 17-style Dynamic Island. Apple announced the iPhone 17e on March 2, 2026, and shipped it with a physical Face ID notch. The standard iPhone 17 uses a Dynamic Island instead. In other words, the iPhone 17e resembles the iPhone 17 in some hardware and software areas, but its front design remains visibly different.
The rumor: an iPhone 17e with Dynamic Island
Before launch, reports suggested that Apple might replace the iPhone 17e’s traditional notch with a Dynamic Island. That change would have made the lower-priced model look more like the standard iPhone 17 and the rest of the newer iPhone lineup.
The claim was never confirmed by Apple. Later reporting indicated that the iPhone 17e would retain the notch, possibly because reusing an older display design would help control component and manufacturing costs. What Apple actually released
Apple announced the iPhone 17e on March 2, 2026. Preorders opened March 4, with availability beginning March 11. The released phone has a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with a physical notch for Face ID and the front camera. (Apple Newsroom)

Notch versus Dynamic Island: what “notch-free” really means
The phrase “notch-free” is imprecise in this context. The iPhone 17 does not have a completely uninterrupted display. Instead, it replaces the older, wider notch with the pill-shaped Dynamic Island, which houses front-camera and Face ID hardware and can display system alerts and Live Activities.
So the accurate comparison is physical notch versus Dynamic Island, not cutout versus no cutout. If you specifically want to eliminate the traditional notch, the iPhone 17 does that. If you want a screen with no camera or sensor opening at all, neither of these phones qualifies.

Both phones use OLED technology and have the same quoted pixel density, but that does not make their displays equivalent. The iPhone 17’s 120Hz ProMotion panel should look noticeably smoother when scrolling, while its higher brightness is more useful outdoors. Its 6.3-inch screen also provides more viewing area. Where the iPhone 17e does resemble the iPhone 17
The rumor was not entirely unreasonable because Apple did carry several newer features down to the 17e. Both models share the A19 generation of processor, although the 17e is not identical in graphics hardware. Both start with 256GB of storage, support MagSafe, use aluminum construction, include Ceramic Shield 2, offer an Action button, and carry IP68 resistance.
The phones also share a broadly similar flat-sided design and compact overall footprint. These similarities make the iPhone 17e feel like part of the same family, even though the notch, thicker bezels, and smaller display make its front immediately distinguishable.
What Apple reserved for the iPhone 17
The Dynamic Island is only one of several differences separating the two models:

- Display: The iPhone 17 adds 120Hz ProMotion, Always-On functionality, a larger panel, thinner bezels, and substantially higher peak brightness.
- Cameras: The iPhone 17 has a dual rear-camera system with an ultrawide lens and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. The 17e uses one 48MP Fusion rear camera and a 12MP TrueDepth front camera.
- Controls: The standard model includes Camera Control, which the 17e does not.
- Connectivity and charging: The iPhone 17 adds wireless-networking hardware and offers different charging specifications; support for MagSafe alone does not prove identical charging speeds or accessory behavior.
- Battery claim: Apple’s quoted video-playback figures differ, with the iPhone 17 offering longer reported playback.
- Colors: The models have different finish options.
The 17e’s 48MP main camera can cover ordinary photography and offers a 2x crop, but that is not a replacement for a true ultrawide camera. Likewise, the A19 branding does not mean the two phones deliver identical feature or graphics capability.

Price and value
Comparison coverage reported U.S. starting prices of $599 for the iPhone 17e and $799 for the iPhone 17, a difference of about $200 at comparable storage tiers. Prices can vary by country, promotions, taxes, trade-in offers, and Apple’s current store listings, so treat those figures as U.S. launch-era comparison points rather than a universal global price. The 17e is not simply the same phone for $200 less. The lower price buys the same broad software ecosystem and a current A19-generation platform, but it also means accepting the notch, 60Hz display, lower brightness, simpler camera system, and missing features.
Which model should you buy?
Choose the iPhone 17e if:
- You want the lowest-cost current iPhone in the iPhone 17 family.
- You prefer a 6.1-inch phone.
- You are upgrading from a 60Hz iPhone and do not particularly value high-refresh-rate scrolling.
- You want 256GB starting storage, MagSafe, strong everyday performance, and Apple ecosystem integration.
- You mainly use the standard rear camera and do not need an ultrawide lens.
Choose the iPhone 17 if:
- You specifically dislike the traditional notch and want the Dynamic Island design.
- You are accustomed to a 120Hz Android phone or iPhone Pro; the 17e’s 60Hz panel may feel like a downgrade.
- You read, browse, game, or multitask extensively and will notice smoother motion.
- You regularly use your phone outdoors and benefit from higher brightness.
- You want an ultrawide camera, a better selfie system, Camera Control, or more headroom for long-term ownership.
Do not buy the iPhone 17e expecting a software update to replace its notch. The notch is part of the physical display and sensor design. Buyers for whom the front appearance is the main priority should choose the iPhone 17 or another model with a Dynamic Island.
