Do not permanently disable your router’s firewall unless another device is protecting the network. For most problems, use a port-forwarding rule, UPnP, an application exception, bridge mode, or access-point mode instead. If you need to test whether the firewall is responsible, turn off only the relevant control briefly, test from outside your network, and restore protection immediately.

Before disabling the firewall

“Router firewall” can mean several different controls. A router’s stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall filters traffic crossing between the internet and your local network. NAT filtering controls how unsolicited inbound IPv4 traffic is handled. Separate settings may control IPv6 traffic, denial-of-service protection, access rules, or service filtering.

These controls are different from Windows Defender Firewall, which protects one Windows computer. If only one application is failing, disabling the router firewall may have no effect because the local computer firewall, the application, or the service itself may be responsible.

Disabling filtering can increase exposure to unsolicited traffic. The exact risk depends on NAT behavior, IPv4 and IPv6 settings, port-forwarding rules, ISP filtering, and whether another firewall is present. A router firewall also does not protect against a compromised device already inside the network or an attacker who has obtained Wi-Fi access.

Choose the fix for the actual problem

Symptom Try first
Game or console reports strict or moderate NAT Check UPnP, port forwarding, double NAT, IPv6, and ISP CGNAT. Do not disable the firewall just to obtain Open NAT.
Port forwarding does not work Confirm the internal device IP, service port and protocol, local firewall rules, double NAT, and whether the ISP uses CGNAT.
Hosting a server, camera, NAS, or VPN Create a narrow port-forwarding rule to the correct device and secure the service.
VPN or VoIP problem Enable only the required VPN passthrough or application setting and check the provider’s required ports.
Two routers are connected Use bridge or passthrough mode on the upstream gateway, or put the downstream router into access-point mode.
Testing whether the router blocks traffic Disable the relevant firewall control temporarily, run the minimum test, then restore it.

Safer fixes to try first

  1. Update the router firmware. Use the vendor’s administration page or app. Firmware menus and security behavior vary by model and revision.
  2. Check the device’s local IP address. A port-forwarding rule aimed at an old DHCP address will fail. Reserve the address or configure a suitable DHCP reservation.
  3. Forward only the required port. Port forwarding maps specified inbound TCP or UDP traffic to one internal device; it does not disable the entire firewall.
  4. Allow the application through the device firewall. Check Windows Defender Firewall or the equivalent firewall on the host device.
  5. Check UPnP. Some games and applications use it to request port mappings automatically. It is application-dependent and should not be enabled solely as a guess.
  6. Remove obsolete rules. Conflicting port-forwarding, port-triggering, DMZ, or UPnP mappings can cause unexpected behavior.
  7. Check for double NAT. If two devices are routing and performing NAT, configure one as a bridge/passthrough gateway or make the downstream device an access point.
  8. Check for CGNAT. If the router’s WAN address is private or does not match the public address shown by an external service, the ISP may be sharing one public IPv4 address. Disabling the local firewall cannot overcome that.

How to turn off a router firewall

Labels differ by manufacturer, firmware, region, hardware revision, and operating mode. The following is a representative procedure, not a universal menu path.

  1. Connect to the router, preferably over Ethernet.
  2. Find its management address. Common addresses are 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1. Some vendors use names such as routerlogin.net, tplinkwifi.net, or asusrouter.com.
  3. Open that address in a browser or launch the vendor’s management app.
  4. Sign in with the router administrator account. Back up the configuration first if the interface provides that option.
  5. Open Advanced, Security, Firewall, WAN, NAT, or Firewall Rules.
  6. Look for Enable Firewall, SPI Firewall, IPv4 Firewall, NAT Filtering, or a similar control.
  7. Turn off only the relevant setting, select Save or Apply, and reboot only if requested.
  8. Run the shortest possible test. Do not browse normally or leave exposed services running while protection is disabled.
  9. Turn the firewall back on immediately after the test.

If the router has separate IPv4 and IPv6 firewall controls, changing one may not change the other. Do not assume that disabling IPv4 filtering disables IPv6 protection.

Representative brand instructions

ASUS

  1. Open asusrouter.com or the router’s LAN address.
  2. Sign in and select Advanced Settings > Firewall.
  3. Set Enable Firewall to No, apply the change, and perform the brief test.
  4. Restore the setting to Yes afterward.

ASUS routers may also show separate IPv6 firewall, URL filtering, network-services filtering, and DoS protection settings. ASUS documents firewall protection as enabled by default and recommends firewall protection on both the router and connected devices. See ASUS firewall guidance.

TP-Link

On some older interfaces, open tplinkwifi.net, sign in, then choose Security > Basic Security and disable Firewall or SPI Firewall. Newer interfaces may use Advanced > Security > Firewall. TP-Link recommends keeping default protection settings unless there is a specific reason to change them. See the TP-Link firewall documentation.

NETGEAR

Depending on the model, relevant controls may appear under Security > Firewall Rules, NAT Filtering, Disable IPv4 Firewall Protection, or Port Scan and DoS Protection. NETGEAR describes Open NAT as less secure than Secured NAT and warns that a default DMZ server reduces firewall security. See NETGEAR firewall rules and its NAT and WAN guidance.

Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi

Google’s mesh products generally focus on port forwarding or port opening rather than a universal firewall-off switch. Use bridge mode only for an appropriate double-NAT design. Google says bridge mode is available only for a single Wifi device, not a multi-device mesh arrangement, and recommends enabling bridge mode on the ISP modem/router when possible. See Google’s port-forwarding instructions and bridge-mode guidance.

Router firewall versus bridge mode, access-point mode, and DMZ

Change What it generally does Best use
Disable firewall Stops or reduces packet filtering on that device Short diagnostic test or controlled design with another firewall
Open NAT Uses a less restrictive NAT-filtering behavior Specific compatibility issue, with reduced protection
Port forwarding Maps selected inbound traffic to one internal device Servers, cameras, games, and remote services
DMZ host Sends most unsolicited inbound traffic to one device Last-resort compatibility or a downstream firewall; not a harmless substitute for forwarding
Bridge or passthrough mode Generally removes routing, NAT, and firewall duties from one gateway Allowing another router or firewall to become the security boundary
Access-point mode Turns a router into a network extension; routing, NAT, and firewall are generally disabled Using an ISP gateway or other router as the primary router

Bridge mode is not simply a firewall-off switch. It changes which device performs routing, DHCP, NAT, and security. Exact behavior depends on the ISP gateway. ASUS documents that access-point mode disables firewall, IP sharing, and NAT by default, while CISA recommends enabling router firewalls, using NAT, and avoiding unnecessary bridging. See CISA’s home-router guidance.

If the router is behind an ISP gateway

First identify which device receives the public WAN address. Then decide which device should handle routing, DHCP, NAT, port forwarding, and firewalling.

  1. Put the ISP gateway into bridge, passthrough, IP passthrough, modem mode, or equivalent mode if supported.
  2. Connect the downstream router’s WAN port to the gateway.
  3. Confirm that the downstream router receives the public address or intended passthrough address.
  4. Disable the gateway’s Wi-Fi if it is no longer needed.
  5. Configure port forwarding and security only on the remaining primary router.
  6. Test internet access, IPv4, IPv6, television or voice services, and remote access.

Alternatively, leave the ISP gateway as the router and set the downstream device to access-point mode. Simply disabling the gateway firewall while both devices continue routing and performing NAT does not create a clean single-router setup.

How to verify the change

Do not rely only on the router’s status page. Test the application or service from an external network, such as mobile data or another internet connection. An inbound test from inside the same LAN may fail because the router lacks NAT loopback or hairpin support even when external access works.

  • Confirm the service is running and listening on the expected TCP or UDP port.
  • Check that the internal IP address has not changed.
  • Review router and device firewall logs.
  • Test IPv4 and IPv6 separately where relevant.
  • Check for another router, ISP gateway, or CGNAT between the service and the internet.
  • Confirm unrelated devices still have internet access.

Restore protection after testing

  1. Set the router firewall back to On or Enable.
  2. Restore Secured NAT where available.
  3. Remove temporary DMZ, port-forwarding, and port-trigger rules.
  4. Disable UPnP if it was enabled only for the test.
  5. Re-enable DoS and IPv6 protection if you changed them.
  6. Reboot if the router requires it.
  7. Confirm the application still works using a narrow exception rather than full firewall deactivation.

When disabling the firewall did not help

The port is still closed

Check the local service, protocol, device IP, Windows Firewall, double NAT, CGNAT, and ISP restrictions. TP-Link lists private or CGNAT WAN addresses and Windows Firewall among common port-forwarding failure causes; see its port-forwarding troubleshooting guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find a firewall switch

The model may not expose a full disable option. Look under WAN, Security, NAT, or Advanced Settings. The ISP may have locked the setting, or the device may be operating as an access point, bridge, repeater, or managed mesh node.

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

The internet stopped working

Restore the firewall, then check the WAN connection type, DHCP, PPPoE credentials, VLAN settings, operating mode, cable placement, and whether the gateway was accidentally placed into bridge mode. Also check for two active DHCP servers.

There is still a double-NAT warning

Disabling a firewall does not necessarily disable routing or NAT. Put the upstream gateway into bridge or passthrough mode, or configure the downstream router as an access point. If neither is possible, forwarding may need to be configured on both routers, although accepting double NAT is less convenient.

Bottom line

Turning off a router firewall should be a short diagnostic step, not the normal solution to gaming, port-forwarding, VPN, camera, or server problems. Use the narrowest fix—an application exception, UPnP, a specific port mapping, or a corrected router architecture—and keep one properly configured device responsible for routing and firewall protection.
