Check Windows before repairing MSI Afterburner. Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters. If your GPU is missing there, shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, or has a warning icon, the problem is usually the graphics driver, laptop graphics mode, BIOS, power, or hardware—not Afterburner itself.
If Windows lists the GPU normally but Afterburner is blank, focus on Afterburner’s installation, monitoring settings, driver compatibility, and conflicts with other tuning utilities. A missing in-game overlay is a separate issue usually involving RivaTuner Statistics Server (RTSS).
Identify your symptom first

1. Check whether Windows detects the GPU
- Press the Windows key, type Device Manager, and open it.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Record every adapter listed and note any warning icon.
- Select View → Show hidden devices, then check again.
- Open the GPU’s Properties and record its Device status and error code.
A normally named GPU means Windows has identified the hardware and the fault may be limited to Afterburner. Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is Windows’ generic fallback driver; install the proper driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer for full functionality. A Code 43 or similar error means the device driver has reported that the GPU is not functioning correctly. See Microsoft’s Basic Display Adapter guidance and Code 43 troubleshooting.
2. Restart the graphics driver
Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. Windows will reset the graphics driver, and the screen may briefly flicker or go black. This can recover a driver that failed to initialize, but it cannot repair a missing driver, disconnected card, or failed GPU. Restart Windows afterward.

3. Update, roll back, or reinstall the graphics driver
If the problem started immediately after a driver update, try:
- In Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the affected GPU and choose Properties → Driver.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the option is available.
- Restart Windows and test Afterburner.
If rollback is unavailable, use Update Driver. If the driver is corrupted, choose Uninstall Device, select the driver-removal option when Windows offers it, restart, and install a fresh package.
For an MSI laptop or prebuilt, start with the exact model’s driver from MSI Support. For a desktop graphics card, use the card or chip manufacturer’s official driver. NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel packages may be newer, but MSI notes that its model-specific laptop drivers are tested for its systems while every newer vendor package may not be.

Before installing or clean-installing a driver, close MSI Afterburner, RTSS, games, browsers, video players, and other 3D applications. NVIDIA specifically warns that monitoring and tuning utilities can interfere with driver installation.
4. Check MSI laptop graphics switching
On supported MSI notebooks, the selected graphics mode can affect which adapters Windows exposes. Open MSI Center → Features → General Settings → GPU Switch, choose MSHybrid Graphics Mode, and restart Windows.
This menu exists only on supported MSI models. Other laptop brands may use a different control center or BIOS setting. In hybrid mode, both integrated and discrete GPUs may appear, and the discrete GPU can remain inactive until a 3D application uses it. Select the correct adapter in Afterburner.

5. Repair MSI Afterburner after Windows detects the GPU
If Device Manager lists the correct GPU without an error, but Afterburner has an empty selector or blank controls:
- Exit Afterburner and RTSS.
- Restart Windows.
- Uninstall MSI Afterburner.
- Download it from MSI’s official Afterburner page.
- Reinstall it and restart Windows again.
MSI warns about fake Afterburner download sites. Avoid cracked, repacked, or ad-heavy installers. The official utility is intended to work with many non-MSI GPUs as well, although available controls vary by GPU, driver, laptop, and manufacturer.
Reinstalling Afterburner cannot make a GPU appear in Device Manager. Fix Windows detection and the driver first.

6. Fix missing readings or the in-game overlay
If the GPU name appears but temperature, usage, clocks, or other readings are missing, open Afterburner → Settings → Monitoring. Select the metrics you want, enable Show in On-Screen Display for each overlay metric, and apply the changes.
For an in-game overlay, confirm that RivaTuner Statistics Server was installed and is running. RTSS commonly provides the overlay display; it does not normally make a missing GPU appear in Device Manager. MSI explains the relationship in its Afterburner OSD guide.

7. Advanced Afterburner checks
After the driver and installation have been verified, temporarily close other GPU-tuning utilities and security software that may block hardware access. Reopen Afterburner after Windows has fully initialized the graphics driver.

Some community reports describe problems involving low-level I/O or hardware-access settings. These labels vary by Afterburner version, and MSI’s official guidance does not establish them as a universal Windows 11 fix. Treat any change as a reversible, advanced experiment: record the original setting, change only one option, and revert it if startup, stability, or security problems occur.

Desktop
- Shut down the PC and switch off the power supply before opening the case.
- Confirm the card is fully seated in the correct PCIe slot.
- Check every required PCIe power connector.
- Connect the monitor to the graphics card rather than the motherboard output when using a discrete GPU.
- Check whether the card appears in BIOS or UEFI hardware information.
Laptop
Do not apply desktop reseating instructions to a sealed laptop. Check the OEM graphics mode, model-specific driver, BIOS/firmware updates, and manufacturer diagnostics instead.
If the GPU remains absent from BIOS and Device Manager after the correct driver is installed, or another known-good system also fails to detect it, suspect power, firmware, or hardware failure. Contact the system or card manufacturer. Do not flash the GPU VBIOS or modify BIOS settings casually.

If normal uninstall and reinstall procedures fail, a complete driver-removal tool may be appropriate, but it should not be the first step. It can temporarily leave Windows using Microsoft Basic Display Adapter and adds recovery complexity. Follow the tool’s current documentation rather than using random command sequences. Intel provides background on complete graphics-driver removal in its driver cleanup guidance.
What not to do first
- Do not reinstall Windows before checking Device Manager and the driver.
- Do not increase voltage or overclock while detection is unreliable.
- Do not disable driver-signature enforcement or antivirus permanently.
- Do not edit the registry or download random DLL “fixes.”
- Do not flash GPU firmware to solve an ordinary Afterburner configuration problem.
Bottom line
Use this order: Device Manager → graphics driver → laptop graphics mode or desktop hardware → Afterburner installation → Monitoring settings and RTSS. If Windows identifies the GPU normally, the problem is usually recoverable without reinstalling Windows. If the adapter is missing even from BIOS or remains absent after a correct driver installation, stop treating it as an Afterburner problem and escalate it as a hardware or firmware issue.
