Facebook login failure is not always a forgotten-password problem. The correct fix depends on what appears after you submit your login details: a rejected password, an unrecognized account, a missing security code, a two-factor authentication prompt, a hacked-account warning, an account restriction, or an app/browser error.
Start with the symptom below, preserve any device where Facebook is still open, and use Facebook’s official recovery pages rather than paying anyone who claims they can unlock your account.
Quick diagnosis: what happens when you try to log in?

Facebook’s labels and available recovery options can differ by device, country, account, and interface rollout. The menu names below are current examples, not guaranteed permanent labels.

Try these safe checks first
- Confirm the destination. Use the official Facebook app or type
facebook.comdirectly into the browser. Do not follow recovery links sent by strangers. - Re-enter the login detail manually. Try the complete phone number with its country code, or use an email address instead. If Facebook rejects the number’s format, remove extra spaces, symbols, or unnecessary leading zeros as instructed for your country.
- Check autofill. A password manager or browser may be inserting an old password or an email address belonging to another Facebook account.
- Compare app and browser access. Try a private/incognito window, another supported browser, or a mobile browser. Temporarily disable extensions that interfere with cookies, redirects, scripts, or login forms.
- Check the connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data. If the app is frozen, restart the device and check for app or operating-system updates.
- Protect an active session. If Facebook is still open on another phone, browser, or computer, do not log out, clear its cookies, uninstall the app, or erase app data until you have used it for recovery.
Avoid repeatedly submitting passwords or requesting codes in rapid succession. It can create confusion about which code is newest and may make the recovery process more difficult to follow.

If Facebook says your password is incorrect
Use Facebook’s account-identification page rather than guessing repeatedly:
- Open facebook.com/login/identify.
- Enter an email address or phone number associated with the account.
- Select the matching account and choose an available reset method.
- Enter the current verification code and create a new password.
- Log in, then review your security settings and logged-in devices.
If Facebook does not find the account, try another email address, phone number, your account name, or your username. A friend may be able to open your profile and provide the username shown in the profile URL. The account-identification process generally works best from a phone, computer, or browser you previously used for Facebook.
If Facebook cannot find your account
Do not assume that the display name is the account identifier. Search again using:
- Every email address you may have used.
- Old and current phone numbers, including the correct country code.
- Your Facebook username from the profile URL.
- The name shown on the profile.
Check that you have not selected another account with a similar name. If a friend can view your profile, ask them for the profile URL. Try the search from a familiar device and usual browser, because Facebook may use previous login context as part of its security checks.

If you no longer have the email address or phone number
A normal password reset may not work when both listed recovery channels are unavailable. Start at facebook.com/login/identify from a familiar device:
- Search with every likely email address, phone number, name, and username.
- Select the correct account.
- Choose “No longer have access to these?”, “Forgot account?”, “Recover”, or the equivalent option if it appears.
- Provide a new email address or phone number when Facebook requests one.
- Complete the account-ownership and security checks shown by Facebook.
Facebook may require the new contact information to be one that has not previously been used on that account. Recovery is not guaranteed, and the checks vary by account. Also try recovering the email account through its provider or restoring access to the phone number through the carrier. Facebook cannot substitute for access to an email inbox or mobile number that has been lost.
If the Facebook security or reset code never arrives
Follow this order:
- Check spam, junk, promotions, and filtered email folders.
- Confirm that the displayed email address or phone number actually belongs to the Facebook account.
- Check mobile signal and SMS reception.
- Wait several minutes before requesting another code.
- If several codes arrive, use only the newest one.
- Use an alternative email, phone, or authentication method if Facebook offers one.
- If the email account itself is locked or compromised, recover it with the email provider.
Do not share a Facebook code with anyone. Someone requesting it is trying to enter your account, even if they claim to be Facebook, Meta, a support agent, or a security employee.

If two-factor authentication is the problem
SMS codes are unavailable
Check reception, confirm that the number is still attached to the account, wait briefly, and try another available method. If Facebook is already open on another device, it may offer an approval notification there.

An authenticator-app code is rejected
Make sure the phone’s date and time are set automatically and that the code is being generated for the correct Facebook account. Reinstalling an authenticator app does not necessarily restore the original account secret, so do not remove the app unless you have another recovery method.
You are already logged in elsewhere
Keep that session active. Facebook may let you approve the login from another browser or device where the account is open. Use the active session to review security settings and create recovery codes before changing anything that could end the session.
Use recovery codes
Facebook says two-factor authentication can provide 10 single-use recovery codes. If you can access the account, the current desktop path is generally:
- Profile picture.
- Settings & privacy.
- Settings.
- Accounts Center.
- Password and security.
- Two-factor authentication.
- Select the relevant account.
- Additional methods.
- Recovery codes.
- Get new codes.
Facebook notes that features and labels are not identical for every user. Each recovery code is intended for one use.

When every two-factor method fails
At the two-factor prompt, select “Need another way to authenticate?”, then “Other Options”, and then “Get more help.” Follow the identity-confirmation instructions Facebook presents. The exact options may differ by account.

A failed password alone does not prove hacking. Warning signs include an unexpected password, email address, phone number, or profile-name change; unfamiliar posts or messages; unknown login alerts; an unfamiliar two-factor method; or devices and locations you do not recognize.
For suspected takeover, use facebook.com/hacked, preferably from a device previously used to access Facebook. Facebook says this route can also help when you are unsure whether the account was hacked.
If Facebook notified you that the email address changed, check the previous email inbox for a security message and a possible link to reverse the change. Availability and wording can vary, so use only links that clearly lead to an official Facebook domain.

After regaining access:
- Change the Facebook password.
- Change the associated email password if that inbox may be compromised.
- Remove unfamiliar email addresses and phone numbers.
- Review logged-in devices and sign out unknown sessions.
- Enable or reconfigure two-factor authentication.
- Check posts, messages, purchases, advertising activity, and Page changes for unauthorized activity.
If Facebook says the account is locked, suspended, or disabled
These states are different:
- Locked: Facebook may require an unlock step or security confirmation.
- Suspended or disabled: Facebook has restricted the account and may show a review or appeal process.
- Deactivated: You voluntarily deactivated the account and may be able to reactivate it by logging in.
- Hacked: Someone may have changed the account’s ownership or security information without permission.
Use the exact notice shown during login and the relevant route in Facebook’s Account Recovery hub. A password reset does not bypass an enforcement restriction. Do not rely on claims about universal appeal deadlines, guaranteed reinstatement, phone support, or a guaranteed human response; availability varies by account, region, and enforcement status.
If the Facebook app will not let you log in
If the website works but the app does not, Facebook recommends updating the app, deleting and reinstalling it, or trying a mobile browser such as Chrome or Safari.

- Update the browser and operating system.
- Clear Facebook site data or app cache.
- Confirm that cookies and JavaScript are enabled.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, aggressive privacy blocker, or network filter.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data.
- Try another device or a separate browser profile.
Clearing cookies or app data can remove saved sessions. Do not do it while an active Facebook session is your only realistic recovery opportunity unless you have first recorded the account details and used that session to set up another recovery method.
Messenger, Facebook Pages, and business assets
A Messenger login problem may originate with the underlying personal Facebook account. Likewise, inability to manage a Facebook Page may be a personal-account login or permissions problem rather than a separate Page password problem.
Recovering a personal account does not automatically restore every Page, business asset, advertising account, or administrator permission. Use the relevant Page or business recovery route after securing the personal account. Do not create a new Facebook account prematurely if the goal is to recover an existing identity, Page, or business asset.
What to do after you regain access
- Set a unique password that you do not reuse for email or other services.
- Secure the associated email account, especially if it may have been involved in the takeover.
- Review contact details and remove anything unfamiliar.
- Review logged-in devices and sign out unknown sessions.
- Enable two-factor authentication and save the recovery codes somewhere secure.
- Review recent posts, messages, payments, ads, and Page changes.
Avoid Facebook recovery scams
Do not pay an unofficial “Meta support” account, recovery service, or supposed employee. No legitimate helper needs your Facebook password, two-factor code, recovery code, remote access, or payment to bypass Facebook’s ownership checks. Use the official Facebook recovery pages linked in this guide and never send a login code to another person.
