You can personalize Chrome with a built-in background, a photo from your computer or phone, browser colors, a rotating theme collection, or a complete Chrome Web Store theme. These changes mainly affect Chrome’s New Tab page and browser interface—not every website you visit.
For most desktop users, open a new tab and select Customize Chrome. On Android, open a new tab, tap More, and choose Customize new tab page.
Choose the right Chrome customization

A Chrome background is not the same as the appearance of the Google Search homepage. Changing Chrome’s New Tab page does not automatically change Google.com, Gmail, YouTube, or other websites.
Change the Chrome background on a computer
- Open Chrome and open a new tab.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner.
- Under Appearance, select Change theme.
- Choose a built-in theme, Upload an image, or a color option.
- If Chrome automatically selects a matching browser color, choose another color under Appearance if you prefer.
With an uploaded image, select a photo stored locally on your computer. A high-contrast image usually works best because very bright or busy artwork can make shortcut labels and other New Tab elements harder to read.

To rotate artwork, choose a theme collection and turn on Refresh daily. Depending on the Chrome release and available controls, the Appearance panel may also offer Light, Dark, or Device appearance choices.

Install a complete Chrome theme from the Web Store
Use a Chrome Web Store theme when you want more than a New Tab wallpaper. A full theme can change the browser frame, including the area around the tabs and the toolbar.

- Go to Settings.
- Under Appearance, select Themes.
- Preview a theme in the Chrome Web Store.
- Select Add to Chrome.
The theme is applied immediately. If you have just installed it, select Undo when that option appears to reverse the change. You can also remove it later through More > Settings > Appearance > Reset to default.
Check the theme publisher and requested permissions before installing third-party themes. Built-in Chrome artwork is the simpler choice if you only want a background or a coordinated Google-provided design. See Google’s Chrome Web Store theme instructions for the installation and removal process.

Change the Chrome background on Android
- Open Chrome and open a new tab.
- Tap the three-dot More menu.
- Select Customize new tab page.
- Open Appearance.
- Choose Chrome default, Upload an image, Chrome colors, or Theme collections.
For a rotating color or theme, enable Refresh daily when the option is available. Google documents these Android controls, but the exact choices can vary by device, Chrome release, account, region, or staged feature availability.
If an uploaded image will not save or Chrome does not return to the New Tab page, Google recommends restarting the app or refreshing the page. You can also try a locally accessible image, check Chrome’s photo or file permissions, use a smaller standard image file, or test a built-in color to determine whether the problem is specific to the image.

Turn Chrome dark or light
Dark mode is separate from uploading a background or selecting a theme. On Android, open More > Settings > Theme, then choose System Default, Dark, or Light.
On desktop, use the appearance controls in the Customize Chrome panel when those choices are shown. Dark appearance changes Chrome’s interface and supported Chrome pages; it does not guarantee that every website will switch to a dark design.

Create a Chrome theme with AI
Some users may see Create with AI under Customize Chrome > Change theme. Google’s documented requirements include being in the United States, being at least 18 years old, and being signed in to a Google Account in Chrome. The tool can use a selected subject, style, mood, and color to generate a theme.
This is an optional feature, not a universal Chrome control. Availability may depend on geography, age, account status, rollout, and Chrome version. See Google’s AI theme instructions.
Reset Chrome’s background or theme
Reset the built-in New Tab appearance
Open a new tab, select Customize Chrome, and choose Reset to Default Chrome. This restores Chrome’s standard appearance.
Remove a Web Store theme
Open More > Settings > Appearance, then select Reset to default.

Why “Customize Chrome” is missing
Try these checks in order:
- Open a fresh New Tab directly in Chrome rather than a page supplied by an extension.
- Check that Google is the default search engine. Google’s documented desktop New Tab customization also requires signing in to a Google Account. This requirement applies to that customization experience, not necessarily to every Web Store theme.
- Temporarily disable extensions that replace the New Tab page.
- Check whether Chrome is managed by a school, employer, or other organization.
- Update Chrome through its normal built-in update mechanism and restart it.
The extension, update, and rollout explanations are troubleshooting possibilities rather than guaranteed causes. The missing control may also reflect account, device, or regional availability.
Work, school, and Chromebook restrictions
Administrators can control whether users may customize the New Tab background. A policy can disable customization and may permanently remove existing custom backgrounds. If the control is missing, disabled, or repeatedly replaced by an organization-selected appearance, contact the administrator instead of trying to bypass the policy.
This is especially relevant if a background disappears after signing in with a work or school account. Google describes these restrictions in its Chrome enterprise policy documentation.
Profiles, sync, and inconsistent appearances
Chrome profiles can have different themes. A theme applied in one profile will not necessarily change another profile’s appearance. Chrome Web Store themes are associated with the user’s Google Account and may appear on other computers when the user signs in to Chrome, but local profile state, synchronization, and organization policies can still make devices look different.

Android custom shortcuts are a separate feature and do not sync to other devices; that limitation should not be confused with New Tab background settings.
