This was a historical warning about SpaceX’s Starship Flight 9, not a current pending launch. On May 22, 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration authorized the mission and expanded its temporary aircraft hazard area to approximately 1,600 nautical miles east of Starbase, Texas. Flight 9 launched on May 27, 2025, and later triggered a mishap investigation.
The FAA was not telling airlines to avoid the entire Caribbean or declaring the region generally unsafe. It was requiring aircraft to stay clear of a defined corridor during the launch window because rocket debris could threaten aircraft if the vehicle failed.
What the FAA approved
The FAA’s May 22, 2025 decision did three important things:
- It made a return-to-flight determination for Starship after the Flight 8 mishap.
- It authorized Starship Flight 9 under SpaceX’s launch license.
- It modified the license to allow up to 25 Starship/Super Heavy launches per year at Boca Chica, up from five.
The approval also updated the aircraft and maritime hazard areas and required SpaceX to maintain $500 million in liability insurance for the mission. Authorization did not mean Starship had been certified as routine, fully reliable, or risk-free. It meant the FAA judged the identified corrective actions and safety requirements sufficient for this particular test flight.

What an Aircraft Hazard Area means
An Aircraft Hazard Area, or AHA, is a modeled region where a launch vehicle, stage, or debris could endanger aircraft if the mission deviates from its planned path. FAA materials describe flight hazard areas as land, sea, or airspace that may need to be surveyed, publicized, controlled, or evacuated to meet commercial-spaceflight safety requirements.
The AHA is not a permanent circular exclusion zone. It is tied to the launch window and managed through aviation procedures, including air-traffic-control coordination and Notices to Air Missions, commonly called NOTAMs.

Why Flight 9’s zone was so much larger
For Flight 9, the FAA described an aircraft hazard area extending approximately 1,600 nautical miles east of Starbase. The previous Flight 8 area was approximately 885 nautical miles.
The enlarged area incorporated updated safety analysis based on earlier Starship flights, including the probability of vehicle failure, population exposure, and the possible propagation and behavior of debris. SpaceX also planned to fly a previously used Super Heavy booster for the first time. Reusing the booster changed the assumptions for the boost-back and landing portions of the mission.
A larger AHA did not mean the FAA expected Flight 9 to fail. It meant that the modeled consequences and uncertainty justified protecting a larger corridor. Regulators balance two competing risks: a smaller area creates more exposure to debris, while a larger area disrupts more aviation and maritime traffic.
Which airspace and regions were involved?
The corridor extended eastward from South Texas through the Gulf of Mexico and the Straits of Florida, including portions of the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. Because the planned trajectory and hazard area reached beyond U.S. territory, the FAA said it coordinated with the United Kingdom, Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Cuba.

This did not close all airspace over those countries. Restrictions applied only to defined areas and only during the relevant launch-related time windows. The approximately 1,600-nautical-mile figure should also not be interpreted as a precise radius around the launchpad. It described an elongated hazard corridor associated with the trajectory and potential debris paths.
How passengers could be affected
The FAA required the launch window to avoid peak transit periods. Even so, it estimated that more than 175 flights could be affected by the Flight 9 hazard area. The agency estimated an average delay of about 40 minutes, with some delays potentially reaching two hours.
Those were scenario estimates, not a guarantee that exactly 175 flights would be delayed. Actual effects depended on the launch time, traffic levels, how long the area remained protected, and whether the launch was scrubbed.

Possible operational effects included:
- Rerouting around the hazard corridor.
- Departure holds at airports.
- Airborne holding while traffic managers waited for the area to clear.
- Longer flight times and missed connections.
- Diversions if an aircraft could not safely continue along its planned route.
A flight could be affected even if it was nowhere near Texas. International routes crossing the Gulf, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, or nearby Atlantic corridors could intersect the protected area.

Why rockets create an aviation hazard
A failed rocket can produce large fragments, smaller debris, propellant-related hazards, and an unpredictable breakup path. Debris may fall across a broad corridor rather than directly beneath the launch site. Aircraft also travel at high speed, leaving little time to react if a dangerous object suddenly appears in their path.
For that reason, airspace authorities protect a modeled region before and during the launch rather than waiting to see whether the vehicle fails. The system is designed to prevent aircraft from entering the area when risk is highest.
What had happened before Flight 9?
The two previous upgraded Block 2 Starship flights had ended prematurely. Flight 7 launched on January 16, 2025, and Flight 8 launched on March 6, 2025.

SpaceX identified corrective actions, and the FAA verified their implementation before authorizing Flight 9.

This process illustrates an important distinction: a return-to-flight determination is not the same as declaring the vehicle reliable. A later mishap can still require a separate investigation and additional corrective action.

Flight 9 was planned as another long-duration developmental test:
- Liftoff from Starbase.
- Separation of the Super Heavy booster and an attempted return.
- Starship upper-stage flight across much of the planet.
- Reentry over the Indian Ocean.
- A controlled splashdown northwest of Australia.
Its objectives included evaluating the redesigned Block 2 vehicle, improved heat-shield materials, redesigned flaps, larger propellant tanks, reconfigured propellant feed lines, and the first reuse of a previously flown Super Heavy booster. These were test objectives, not guaranteed outcomes.
What happened after the warning?
- May 15, 2025: The FAA approved Flight 9 license modifications but said launch could not proceed until the Flight 8 review was resolved or a return-to-flight determination was made.
- May 22, 2025: The FAA authorized Flight 9 and expanded the hazard areas.
- May 27, 2025: Flight 9 launched.
- May 30, 2025: The FAA required a mishap investigation into the loss of the Starship vehicle.
- June 12, 2025: The FAA closed the Flight 8 investigation and said corrective actions had been verified before Flight 9.
- August 15, 2025: The FAA closed the Flight 9 investigation and allowed Flight 10 operations to proceed under the existing license.
- May 22, 2026: Flight 12 experienced an anomaly.
- May 27, 2026: The FAA required a mishap investigation into Flight 12.
As of August 2026, the original “next Starship launch” headline is therefore historical. It referred specifically to Flight 9, not to the next Starship mission now awaiting launch.
The regulatory trade-off
The FAA’s approach reflects a trade-off between public safety and disruption. A larger hazard area provides more protection when debris behavior is uncertain, but it can affect more flights and international airspace users. Scheduling launches during non-peak periods reduces the number of aircraft exposed to rerouting or delay.
If Starship develops a stronger record of successful and predictable operations, the FAA has indicated that future hazard areas could become smaller. Conversely, an anomaly can lead to a Debris Response Area, a mishap investigation, and additional return-to-flight requirements.
The central point is that the FAA was managing a modeled debris risk—not issuing a blanket warning against flying anywhere near Starbase. Aircraft operators followed defined restrictions and air-traffic procedures during the applicable launch window.
