Reverse wireless charging turns a compatible phone into a small wireless charging pad. Instead of receiving power through its charging coil, the phone uses its own battery and coil to send power inductively to another compatible device placed on its back.
It can be useful for topping up Qi-compatible earbuds, watches, or another phone in an emergency. However, it is usually slower and less efficient than a cable or power bank, and wireless charging support does not automatically mean a phone can share power.
How reverse wireless charging works
In ordinary wireless charging, a pad sends power to a phone. Reverse wireless charging reverses that direction: the phone becomes the transmitter and the other device becomes the receiver.

Because the coils must be close and properly aligned, thick cases, metal plates, magnetic accessories, camera bumps, and movement can interfere. The phone is not creating extra energy: it is transferring part of its own battery, with losses during conversion and transmission.
Qi is an open wireless-charging standard developed by the Wireless Power Consortium. A receiver being Qi-compatible does not prove that a phone can transmit power; the phone must also support reverse charging.
What devices can it charge?
A compatible phone may charge:
- Another Qi-compatible smartphone.
- A wireless-earbud case that supports Qi reception.
- Some Qi-compatible watches, bands, and other accessories.
The key word is compatible. Many smartwatches use a proprietary charger or a specially shaped magnetic puck rather than ordinary Qi charging. An Apple Watch, for example, should not be assumed to charge from an Android phone’s rear coil. Samsung’s compatibility information also excludes some newer watch models from Wireless PowerShare while listing selected older models.

Samsung’s Wireless PowerShare support page is a useful example of why accessory compatibility must be checked by model.
Which phones support reverse wireless charging?
Support varies by model, phone family, region, and software version. A phone that can receive power from a Qi pad may not be able to transmit it.
Samsung Galaxy: Wireless PowerShare
Samsung calls the feature Wireless PowerShare. On supported Galaxy phones, Samsung’s documented procedure is:
- Charge the phone to at least 30%.
- Open Quick Settings and tap Wireless PowerShare. If the tile is missing, add it to Quick Settings.
- Place the devices back-to-back, with the receiver centered over the phone’s charging area.
- Separate the devices when you have enough power.
PowerShare turns off after 60 seconds when it does not detect another device. Samsung also says that some phones can remain connected to a wired charger while sharing power, but this should not be assumed for every brand or model. Samsung’s Galaxy A series, XCover series, and Galaxy Tab series are not generally compatible with wireless charging and should not be presented as universal PowerShare devices.

Google Pixel: Battery Share
Google calls its feature Battery Share. The cited Google support page lists Pixel 5, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL among supported families. Google’s list and feature availability can change, so check the current support page and the exact model.
Battery Share requires a Qi-compatible receiver. Google warns that metallic or magnetic attachments—including some MagSafe accessories, PopSockets, and ring holders—can interfere. It also notes that poor placement, thick cases, and other obstructions can slow or stop charging. Do not confuse ordinary wireless-charging reception, which Google documents for more Pixel models, with Battery Share transmission.
Huawei: Wireless reverse charging
Huawei calls the feature Wireless reverse charging. Huawei documentation says supported phones can charge compatible Qi devices such as phones, tablets, watches, and bands. The cited support pages use a 20% battery threshold on supported devices, with behavior varying by model and charging state; some documentation says reverse charging becomes unavailable or disables below that level when the phone is not itself charging.
iPhone
Apple’s cited documentation explains how iPhones receive power from Qi-certified and MagSafe chargers and how compatible AirPods cases can charge on wireless chargers. It does not document a general user-facing procedure for using an iPhone as a wireless charging pad for another phone or accessory.

Verify any particular model against a current Apple support document rather than relying on a rumor or accessory listing.
How to use reverse wireless charging
- Confirm that the transmitting phone officially supports reverse wireless charging.
- Confirm that the receiving device supports Qi reception or the manufacturer’s specified compatible system.
- Charge the transmitting phone above its required battery threshold.
- Remove thick cases, metal plates, magnetic wallets, cards, ring holders, and other obstructions.
- Enable Wireless PowerShare, Battery Share, or the equivalent feature.
- Place the receiver directly against the phone’s back and move it slowly until its charging indicator appears.
- Keep both devices still and monitor temperature.
- Stop when the receiver has enough power or the transmitting phone reaches its battery-protection limit.
Menu names and paths vary by Android skin and software version. Use the exact feature name shown by the phone instead of following an old universal Android menu path.
Why is reverse wireless charging slow?
Reverse charging is generally slower than wired charging and often slower than using a dedicated wireless charging pad. The exact rate depends on the phone pair, receiver, alignment, case, temperature, battery level, and software.

- Wireless power transfer has conversion and coupling losses.
- The receiver may negotiate a lower rate than the host phone’s normal incoming wireless-charging rate.
- Heat can cause the phone to reduce or stop power transfer.
- A small receiver coil is harder to align than a full-size charging pad.
- The host phone may reserve battery power for itself.
The wattage advertised for a phone’s incoming wireless charging is not automatically the wattage available for reverse charging. Samsung says speed and power vary by device, while Google describes Battery Share as potentially slower. In practical terms, reverse charging is good for restoring enough power to make a call, unlock a device, or extend earbud use—not for quickly filling a second phone.

The receiver is not Qi-compatible
A proprietary watch or accessory may not accept ordinary Qi power. Check the receiver’s manual or specifications rather than assuming that every wearable supports Qi.
The phone supports receiving but not transmitting
Wireless charging is not a single two-way feature. Look for Wireless PowerShare, Battery Share, Wireless reverse charging, or explicit manufacturer support for the exact model.
The coils are misaligned
Move the receiver slowly around the back of the phone until charging begins. Small watch and earbud-case coils may not sit over the phone’s optimal charging area.
A case or accessory is interfering
Remove thick cases, metal-backed cases, magnetic wallets, cards, coins, PopSockets, ring holders, and MagSafe-style attachments. Google and Samsung both warn that these can interfere with charging.

Samsung’s documented PowerShare procedure requires at least 30%. Huawei documentation cites 20% on supported models. These are manufacturer-specific safeguards, not universal Android rules.
The devices are too hot
Wireless power transfer produces heat. Charging may throttle or stop in a hot car, direct sunlight, or under an insulating case. Stop if either device becomes unusually hot, let it cool, and try again.

The receiver moved
Stabilize both devices. A watch or earbud case can slide away from the charging zone easily, especially when the phone has a raised camera module.
Is reverse wireless charging safe?
It is designed for supported phones and compatible receivers, but it is not sensible to describe it as risk-free in every setup. Use the manufacturer-supported feature, keep metal objects and cards away from the interface, and stop if either device becomes unusually hot. Automatic throttling or shutoff can occur when the phone detects poor coupling, excessive temperature, or a low battery.
Samsung warns that metal or magnetic materials can reduce efficiency or cause damage during wireless charging. Apple likewise explains that charging can pause when temperatures become unsuitable. Do not cover the phone with thick insulating material while it is sharing power.
Reverse wireless charging versus the alternatives

For charging a second phone, a short USB-C cable or power bank is normally the better choice. For earbuds in a pocket or a compatible watch while travelling, reverse wireless charging can be more convenient because it avoids carrying another cable.
Reverse wireless charging, MagSafe, and Qi2 are not the same
MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging and accessory system. Qi2 is a wireless-charging standard and ecosystem that can include magnetic alignment. Reverse wireless charging describes the direction of power transfer from a phone to another device.
A phone with Qi2 is not automatically a reverse charger, and a phone with reverse charging is not automatically Qi2-compatible. Magnetic attachment can improve alignment with a compatible charger, but magnets do not by themselves make a phone transmit power.
Is reverse wireless charging worth using?
- For earbuds: Often yes, if the case supports Qi and the phone has enough battery.
- For a watch: Only if the exact watch model supports the host phone’s charging system.
- For another phone: Useful in an emergency, but a cable or power bank is normally faster and more efficient.
- For daily charging: No. It is better treated as a convenience or backup feature.
- When buying a phone: Consider it a bonus, not a primary reason to choose the device unless you regularly need cable-free emergency charging.
Before buying, check three things: whether the exact phone model supports transmission, whether your accessory uses Qi rather than a proprietary charger, and whether a cable or power bank would solve the same problem more reliably.
