On an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, you can lock Instagram with the iPhone’s built-in app-locking feature. On the Home Screen, touch and hold Instagram, choose Require Face ID, then authenticate. Instagram stays installed and visible, but opening it requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the iPhone passcode.
This protects Instagram on that particular iPhone—not your Instagram account on other devices—and it does not replace a strong password or two-factor authentication.
How to lock Instagram with Face ID
- Go to the iPhone’s Home Screen.
- Find the Instagram icon.
- Touch and hold the icon.
- Tap Require Face ID.
- Tap Require Face ID again if prompted.
- Authenticate with Face ID, or use the device passcode when the iPhone offers it.
These are Apple’s current instructions for locking a downloaded app. See Apple’s iPhone User Guide for the latest wording, which can vary by device, language, or future iOS version.
Instagram remains installed and normally visible. After you quit the app, it locks again, so the next attempt to open it requires authentication.

How to hide Instagram as well as lock it
Locking protects Instagram when someone opens it. Hiding also removes it from the ordinary Home Screen and places it in App Library’s Hidden folder.
- Touch and hold Instagram on the Home Screen.
- Tap Require Face ID.
- Tap Hide and Require Face ID.
- Authenticate with Face ID or the iPhone passcode.
- Tap Hide App.
To open it later, swipe left past your Home Screen pages to reach App Library, tap Hidden, authenticate, and tap Instagram. Apple documents this behavior in its Personal Safety User Guide.

Locking versus hiding Instagram

Hiding is not a stronger authentication method than locking. Both rely on the iPhone’s Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode system.

- It protects the app on that iPhone. The lock or hidden status does not sync through iCloud or automatically apply to another iPhone, iPad, Android device, or web browser.
- It does not change your Instagram password or log you out.
- It does not lock individual Instagram chats separately.
- It is not protection against someone who knows your device passcode. The iPhone may allow the passcode as an alternative to Face ID.
- It is not Instagram account security. Use Instagram’s own password and two-factor-authentication controls for protection against account takeover.
Apple says information from a locked app is suppressed in certain places, including notification previews, Search, Siri suggestions, applicable call-history views, and CarPlay. This does not mean every trace disappears. A hidden app’s name can still appear in areas such as Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps, Screen Time, battery-usage views, and App Store purchase history.

If notification content is particularly sensitive, review the iPhone’s notification-preview settings separately rather than assuming the app lock removes every notification trace.

- Touch and hold the Instagram icon.
- Tap Don’t Require Face ID, or the equivalent label mentioning Touch ID or passcode.
- Authenticate.
If Instagram was hidden, open the Hidden folder and authenticate first. Removing the lock returns the app to the normal Home Screen and App Library locations.
If “Require Face ID” is missing
- Check the iOS version: open Settings > General > Software Update. The built-in locking and hiding feature requires iOS 18 or later.
- Use the app icon: the option appears in Instagram’s Home Screen quick-actions menu, not normally inside Instagram’s settings.
- Confirm Instagram is installed: the feature is intended for downloaded apps. Some apps included with iOS cannot be locked, and Apple says apps installed with iOS cannot be hidden.
- Update iOS if an update is available, then restart the iPhone and try again.
- Check restrictions: device-management policies or parental controls may affect available options. Family and age-related rules can vary by country or region.
Screen Time can impose an app limit or Downtime restriction if the native option remains unavailable, but it is a different control and is not equivalent to the immediate native app lock. On iOS versions before iOS 18, there was no general built-in “Require Face ID” control for arbitrary apps; older Screen Time and Shortcuts workarounds may behave differently.

If Face ID does not work
When prompted, enter the iPhone passcode if that option is offered. If Face ID itself is failing:
- Look directly at the TrueDepth camera.
- Remove anything covering the Face ID sensors.
- Try without a mask or sunglasses that interfere with recognition.
- Check Settings > Face ID & Passcode to confirm Face ID is configured.
- Restart the iPhone and try again.
Resetting and re-enrolling Face ID should be a later step, not the first response. Remember that anyone who knows the iPhone passcode may be able to open the locked app.
Important limitations
Apple’s app-locking feature is not available for every Apple-installed app. Apple lists Calculator, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Find My, Maps, Shortcuts, and Settings among apps that cannot be locked. Instagram is normally a separately downloaded app and should use the standard Home Screen option on a supported iPhone.

The lock applies only to the device where you enable it. If you share access to Instagram on another device or browser, secure those sessions separately and log out where appropriate.
