Mumble has two separate parts: the client application you install on your computer and the server that hosts channels and conversations. To join an existing group, install only the client and obtain the server address from its owner. To create your own private voice-chat space, you also need a self-hosted or paid Mumble server.
This guide covers installing Mumble on Windows, macOS, and Linux, configuring your microphone and push-to-talk key, connecting to a server, preserving your certificate-based identity, and troubleshooting common problems.
Before installing Mumble
Mumble is free, open-source, low-latency voice-chat software. It does not require a central Mumble account: you normally connect to a particular public, private, or self-hosted server.
- Client: the desktop application used to connect and talk.
- Server: the service that provides channels and carries conversations. It may also be called mumble-server or, traditionally, Murmur.
You need only the client if a friend, gaming community, workplace, or organization already operates a server. You need a server as well if you want to host your own private channels.

Have a microphone or headset ready. If you are joining an existing server, ask for its hostname or IP address, port, username requirements, and password if one is required.
Download Mumble safely
Download the client from the official project website at mumble.info/downloads. Do not treat mumble.com as the official open-source project site; it is a separate commercial hosting provider.
At the time of the latest check on August 18, 2026, the latest stable release listed by the project was Mumble 1.5.915, released July 18, 2026. The final precompiled macOS build in the 1.5 series is listed as 1.5.901, because new precompiled macOS binaries are not currently available for that series. Versions and operating-system availability can change, so check the official downloads page immediately before installing.

Its development builds are not the same as stable releases.
If you are upgrading from Mumble 1.3.x or earlier, manually uninstall the old version before installing 1.5. The project warns that this older upgrade path is irreparably broken.
Install Mumble on Windows
- Open the official downloads page.
- Download Windows client (x64).
- Run the downloaded installer. If Windows SmartScreen appears, verify that the file came from the official Mumble domain or the project’s official release source before continuing.
- Accept the license, choose the installation location if required, and complete the installation.
- Launch Mumble from the Windows Start menu.
Windows normally creates a Mumble entry in the Start menu. If the microphone does not work, open Windows microphone privacy settings and make sure desktop applications are allowed to access it. Also check the physical mute switch, headset controls, and the input device selected in Windows.
Install Mumble on macOS
- Download the macOS client from the official downloads page.
- Open the downloaded disk image.
- Drag Mumble into
/Applications. - Open Mumble from Applications.
- Approve microphone access when macOS asks.
Global push-to-talk shortcuts require Accessibility permission. In current macOS versions, look under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility, then allow Mumble. Menu names can vary slightly between macOS releases.

Install Mumble on Linux
The Mumble project recommends using the package supplied by your distribution. Package names and availability vary, so treat these as examples rather than universal commands.

Distribution packages

Flatpak and Snap
Flatpak and Snap packages are listed by the project but maintained by their respective communities. See the Flathub Mumble package or the Snap package for current installation instructions.
Linux audio may be routed through PipeWire, PulseAudio, JACK, or another distribution-specific system. Wayland and the desktop compositor can also limit global shortcuts. Event-driven shortcuts may require access to /dev/input/event*. Some systems document adding your user to the input group, but this gives applications running as that user access to input-device data and has security implications.
Do not permanently use sudo chmod a+r /dev/input/event* as a shortcut fix. The documented workaround is broad, temporary, and may not survive a reboot.
Complete Mumble’s first-run setup
Start Mumble and follow its setup wizard. Wording and screens can vary slightly by operating system and release, but the process normally includes:
- Selecting the microphone or other audio input device.
- Selecting speakers or a headset for output.
- Choosing a transmission mode.
- Selecting or creating a client certificate.
- Testing your audio.
The three transmission choices are:
- Push To Talk: Mumble transmits only while you hold an assigned key. This is the best starting point for gaming, noisy rooms, mechanical keyboards, and shared spaces.
- Voice Activity: Mumble detects sound and transmits automatically. It is convenient in a quiet room, but requires threshold calibration to avoid sending keyboard noise, fans, breathing, or game audio.
- Continuous: Mumble continuously transmits the input. Avoid it unless you have a specific reason; it can send unintended background or speaker audio.
You can revisit these settings through Configure → Settings. The Audio Input and Audio Output sections contain device, transmission, processing, compression, jitter-buffer, volume, attenuation, and positional-audio controls.
Configure your microphone and speakers
Start with a stable baseline instead of changing every advanced control:
- Use a headset where possible to reduce echo.
- Begin with the operating system’s default input and output devices.
- Use push-to-talk until your microphone level is confirmed.
- Leave exclusive mode disabled initially. Exclusive access can prevent other applications from using the device.
- Enable moderate noise suppression only if background noise is a problem.
- Use echo cancellation when using speakers; it is less important with a well-isolated headset.
On Windows, the system/interface is typically WASAPI. Linux systems may use PulseAudio, PipeWire, JACK, or another audio interface. If you change headsets or USB devices while Mumble is running, reopen its audio settings or restart Mumble so the device list refreshes.
If incoming speech is choppy, increasing the jitter buffer may help at the cost of some delay. Lower output-delay values can reduce latency but may make unstable audio worse. Change one setting at a time and retest. Positional audio is useful only with supported games and compatible setups.

Configure push-to-talk
- Open Configure → Settings.
- Open the audio or shortcut controls.
- Set transmission to Push To Talk.
- Assign a convenient keyboard or mouse button.
- Test the key while another application or game is focused.
Mumble also supports an optional double-press mode that keeps transmission active until canceled. Use it carefully in shared channels because it is easier to forget that the microphone is open.

On Windows, an Xbox controller button may be intercepted by the Game Bar before Mumble receives it.
Test your audio
Mumble provides two useful loopback tests in its audio settings:
- Local loopback plays back the audio that would be transmitted. It tests the microphone and local output path.
- Server loopback sends audio through the server and back. It tests the connection and server handling as well as the local devices.
Use them in this order:
- If Local loopback fails, check the operating-system microphone permission, selected device, mute switch, input level, and headset connection.
- If Local works but Server loopback fails, check the server address, port, firewall, network, VPN, and server permissions.
- If both work but another person cannot hear you, ask them to check their output device and consider whether a channel or server ACL prevents speaking.
Connect to a Mumble server
Open Mumble’s server browser or add a server manually. You will typically enter:
- Label: a name for the saved connection.
- Address: the server hostname or IP address.
- Port: the port supplied by the server owner. It is configurable, so do not assume one universal port.
- Username: your display name or server-required name.
- Password: only if the server requires one.
You can connect to a public listing, a private server supplied by a friend or organization, a locally hosted server, or a paid hosted server. After connecting, select a channel and test push-to-talk. A server administrator may restrict which channels you can enter or whether you can speak.

Protect your Mumble certificate and identity
Mumble’s certificate is not the same as a conventional username-and-password account. A server administrator can register your certificate to a user and assign permissions to that identity. Changing your display name does not necessarily create a new identity.
On first launch, Mumble can generate a self-signed certificate automatically. If the server does not require a stronger identity process, keeping that certificate is normally sufficient. Use Mumble’s Certificate Wizard in the configuration menu to manage or replace certificates.
Back up the certificate after setup and keep the backup private. If you reinstall Mumble or move to another computer without restoring the certificate, you may appear to have lost your server identity, groups, or privileges. Never casually share a certificate file.
Mumble also stores server lists, favorites, certificates, friends, access tokens, and comments in a client database. The documented locations are:

Close Mumble before copying its database or settings files, and store backups somewhere private.
Troubleshoot common Mumble problems
No one can hear me
- Confirm that Mumble selected the correct microphone.
- Check physical and operating-system mute controls.
- Run Local loopback.
- Check that the speaking indicator appears when you use push-to-talk.
- Confirm that the shortcut is assigned to the key you are actually pressing.
- Run Server loopback.
- Ask the server administrator whether a channel or ACL denies speaking.
- Have the other person check their output device.
The microphone works elsewhere but not in Mumble
Mumble may have selected an unavailable device, lost access after a headset change, or been blocked by operating-system privacy controls. Check the selected interface and device, disable exclusive mode during testing, and restart Mumble after changing the system default. Sample-rate or driver conflicts can also affect a particular audio interface.
I can hear myself locally, but Server loopback fails
Check the hostname, configurable server port, firewall, VPN, corporate network restrictions, server availability, and server-side permissions. Local loopback does not test the network path.
Push-to-talk does not work globally
On macOS, grant Mumble Accessibility permission. On Linux, check Wayland and compositor limitations as well as input-device permissions. On Windows, test for conflicts with Game Bar, game overlays, or controller mappings. First test the shortcut outside the game so you know whether the problem is Mumble or the game.

The server starts, but nobody can connect
Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the intended interface and configured port. Check the local firewall, router port forwarding when hosting behind NAT, DNS or hostname resolution, server password, and ACL settings. The port is configurable and may differ between virtual servers.
My identity or permissions disappeared
This usually means the old certificate or client database was not restored, or a new certificate was generated. Ask the server administrator whether permissions were registered to the previous certificate rather than merely to your username.

Most readers should complete the client setup first. A server is needed only when you want to host channels for your own group. You can use the Windows server download, a static macOS server, a Linux distribution package, the official Mumble Docker image, or a paid hosting provider.
Start the server
Depending on the operating system and package, the executable may be called mumble-server or Murmur. The project documents these commands:
mumble-servermumble-server --set-su-pw <password>mumble-server --ini <inifile>mumble-server --foregroundmumble-server --verbose--set-su-pw writes the SuperUser password to the database and exits. Until a password is set, the SuperUser account is disabled. Depending on the installation path, the first-start password may instead be generated and shown in the server log.

The initial administrative connection normally uses the username SuperUser and the configured or generated password. After connecting, join the root channel, right-click it, open the channel edit dialog, create channels, and configure groups and permissions.
Configure channels and ACLs
Mumble permissions are ACL-based, can inherit through the channel tree, and are evaluated from top to bottom. Create groups such as members, moderators, and administrators, then test permissions with a second client or account before inviting everyone.
Server configuration uses one key=value setting per line. The current template and explanations are in the project’s server configuration documentation. Settings include the database location, port, server password, bandwidth, TLS certificates, registration details, and ICE administration options.
Do not expose the ICE administration interface publicly without appropriate secrets and firewall protection. The official documentation warns that an exposed ICE interface can grant administrative access to every virtual server in the process. Protect SuperUser credentials, update the server and operating system, and back up the database and certificates.
Self-hosting or paid hosting?
- Self-hosting: gives you maximum control and can work well on a local network, home server, or VPS, but you must handle updates, firewall rules, port forwarding, backups, and uptime.
- Hosted Mumble: is easier if you do not want to administer infrastructure. Mumble.com is a separate commercial provider advertising hosted servers and related management tools; check its current terms and pricing directly.
A paid server is not mandatory for using the Mumble client, and hosting costs are separate from the free, open-source software.
Mobile availability
The official downloads page currently says there is no official Android client. Third-party clients are available, including projects listed by the Mumble community, but their support and maintenance vary. The listed iOS app is described as unmaintained and was last updated in 2017. Treat mobile clients as third-party options rather than equivalent official releases.
Security basics
Mumble uses encrypted communication and certificate-based identity, but those features do not make every server automatically private or correctly configured. Use a server password or restrictive ACLs for private communities, protect your certificate and SuperUser credentials, avoid exposing ICE, and keep both client and server software updated.
