For a Java project, start with Eclipse’s built-in Java Development Tools (JDT) compiler diagnostics: tune warnings and errors under Window > Preferences > Java > Compiler > Errors/Warnings, then use the Problems view to review findings. Add Checkstyle for coding-standard rules or SpotBugs for potential bug patterns; each plug-in needs project-level configuration. Eclipse plug-in developers have a separate API compatibility workflow through PDE.
Choose the kind of analysis you need
“Code analysis” can mean several different checks. Eclipse’s available results depend on the language support, project type, installed plug-ins, and their configuration. For Java, these are the main options:

If your project is not Java, do not assume JDT, Checkstyle, or SpotBugs will analyze it. Use the Eclipse editor and plug-ins that support that language.

Set workspace defaults
- Open Window > Preferences > Java > Compiler > Errors/Warnings.
- Expand the relevant category, such as code style, potential programming problems, resource leaks, unused code, or null analysis.
- Set each applicable item to Warning, Error, or Ignore, then apply the changes.
For example, you might make unused imports a warning, or raise a particular rule to an error if your team treats it as a build-blocking issue. The available categories and their defaults vary by setting, Eclipse-based product, and project configuration. Annotation-based null analysis also depends on the project’s null annotations and related settings; it is not automatically enabled for every project. Override settings for one project
To configure a project independently, select it and open Project > Properties > Java Compiler. Enable project-specific settings if needed, then adjust its compiler options. Workspace preferences provide defaults; project settings let a project use different severities or Java compiler behavior. The Java compiler preferences also include compliance and class-file generation settings, so avoid changing those simply to silence a diagnostic. See Eclipse’s Java compiler preferences.
Find and act on diagnostics
Eclipse collects issues from builders in the Problems view. If it is not visible, open Window > Show View > Other… > General > Problems. Findings are grouped by severity, and the view can be filtered. Editor annotations can mark affected source lines; double-click a Problems entry to navigate to its location. When Eclipse offers a Quick Fix, use it to inspect a suggested change before applying it.

A blank or unexpectedly short list does not necessarily mean the project has no findings: a Problems view filter can hide markers. Review the active filters if an analyzer reports results but you cannot see them. Eclipse documents the view’s navigation and filtering in its Problems view guide.
Add Checkstyle for coding-standard rules
- Install the Eclipse Checkstyle plug-in through Eclipse Marketplace or the plug-in’s official site.
- Associate or activate a Checkstyle configuration for the Java project. If the project already has a shared ruleset, use that rather than creating a conflicting local one.
- If starting from scratch, agree on the rules before enabling a large set of checks. Checkstyle uses an XML configuration, which can be shared across projects; see its configuration documentation.
The plug-in reports configured rule violations as editor annotations and Problems entries. Its project builder checks changed files on save when Eclipse Auto-Build is enabled; installation alone does not choose a ruleset or guarantee that checks run. The plug-in site currently lists release 13.9.0 and says it is for Eclipse 2025-03 or higher. Those are the site’s stated compatibility details, not a guarantee for every customized installation; check the Eclipse Checkstyle plug-in page when installing. The plug-in release and Checkstyle engine are separately versioned, so verify compatibility if a shared configuration uses newer checks.

Add SpotBugs for potential bug patterns
- Install the SpotBugs Eclipse plug-in through Eclipse Marketplace or the official release update site. The guide lists Eclipse Neon (4.6) or later as a requirement and provides release, candidate, and latest update-site options; for routine use, choose the official release channel rather than a candidate or development build.
- In Package Explorer, right-click a Java project and choose Spot Bugs to run an analysis.
- To tune the project, open its properties and select the SpotBugs page. Configure whether analysis runs automatically, the minimum warning priority, bug categories, and detectors.
Results appear as source markers and in Problems. A finding identifies a possible bug pattern; inspect the code and context before deciding whether it is a real defect. Automatic runs can be configured to follow Java class modifications, but they may add background work. For installation and project options, consult the SpotBugs Eclipse plug-in guide.
Choose automatic or on-demand checks
- Use on-demand runs when a project is large, analysis is noisy, or background work affects responsiveness. Run the analyzer when you are ready to review its results.
- Use automatic checks when early feedback is valuable and the project remains responsive. Checkstyle’s on-save behavior depends on Auto-Build; SpotBugs automatic analysis is a project option.
- Set team thresholds deliberately. Agree which severities block work and how exceptions are documented. Do not broadly suppress warnings just to empty the Problems view.
For consistent results across a team, keep rule configurations under version control and, where practical, align IDE checks with the build or CI workflow. Checkstyle also supports command-line, Maven, Gradle, and Ant workflows, as described on the Checkstyle project site.

For Eclipse plug-in developers: configure PDE API Tooling
Plug-in projects have an additional concern: whether code uses APIs appropriately and remains compatible with a previous plug-in version. PDE provides API Tooling for this purpose; it is not a replacement for ordinary application code analysis. In an existing plug-in project, use PDE Tools > API Tooling Setup…, then configure an API baseline for compatibility analysis. The baseline supplies the prior version against which compatibility is assessed. See the PDE overview and the PDE User Guide.

Troubleshoot missing, noisy, or slow results
- No findings appear: Confirm the analyzer is installed, enabled for the project, and configured; rebuild if needed, then check Problems view filters.
- There are too many findings: Verify the selected ruleset and severities, then adjust specific rules or use documented suppressions. Avoid disabling broad categories without team agreement.
- Analysis slows Eclipse: Check whether automatic runs are enabled and consider on-demand analysis or narrower checks, especially for a large project. There is no single performance setting that suits every project.
- A plug-in will not install: Check its stated Eclipse compatibility and use its official installation channel. Also verify that the plug-in version supports the analyzer configuration you intend to use.
- SpotBugs reports an out-of-memory error: Its guide describes increasing Eclipse’s JVM heap in
eclipse.ini;-Xmx1000mis an example, not a universal recommendation. Keep arguments from-vmargsonward at the end of the file, one argument per line.
