Windows 10’s emoji panel has evolved across builds, and the “new” panel you’re seeing isn’t always controlled by a single, obvious toggle. In most cases, it appears or changes behavior after Windows updates and related text/input components get refreshed.
This guide shows the most reliable ways to enable the newer Windows 10 emoji panel (usually by updating) and to disable it (usually by uninstalling/rolling back the change and stopping updates from putting it back).
What Windows 10 means by the new emoji panel
On Windows 10, the emoji panel is typically invoked with Win + . (Win + semicolon on some layouts). The “new” emoji panel usually refers to a newer UI/experience for the same feature—layout, categories, search behavior, or rendering tweaks—depending on your exact Windows 10 version and cumulative updates.
Because Windows 10 doesn’t consistently expose a dedicated user-facing switch like “Enable new emoji panel,” the practical approach is to manage the underlying OS update state.

Prerequisites before you try to enable or disable anything
- Know your Windows 10 version: Press Win + R, type
winver, press Enter. - Check what update you’re on: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history.
- Have rollback options ready: If you may need to disable the change, make sure System Restore / recovery options are available (details below).
If you’re on an older build, your “new emoji panel” may not be available regardless of settings.
How to enable the new emoji panel on Windows 10
Method 1: Update Windows 10 to a build that includes the newer emoji experience
Enabling the newer emoji panel is typically a matter of updating Windows so your input/text components match the newer experience.
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install any cumulative updates and reboot when prompted.
- After reboot, test the emoji panel with Win + ..
For most users, getting onto a relatively current Windows 10 version and the latest cumulative update is what moves you onto the newer emoji panel experience.
Method 2: Update optional language/keyboard components
Emoji and input rendering can depend on language/input components. If you’re using multiple keyboard layouts or a non-default language, updating those components can help.

- Select Language.
- Click Windows display language or your relevant language, then open Options.
- Install any available updates for Language pack, Handwriting, and related features (names vary by language).
- Restart and test with Win + ..
Method 3: Confirm the emoji panel shortcut is working
Sometimes the emoji panel isn’t “missing”—the shortcut is blocked or the input method differs.
- Press Win + . to open the emoji panel.
- Try again in a text field (Notepad, Word, browser search box).
- If your shortcut doesn’t work, check whether Fn + Win behavior is involved on your keyboard.

How to disable the new emoji panel (real-world options)
Disabling the emoji panel UI change on Windows 10 is usually not a simple checkbox. Instead, you either revert the update that introduced the new experience or stop Windows from updating again.

- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select View update history.
- Scroll to the latest Quality update or Feature update and note the KB number (example format: KB5021234).
- Go back to the Windows Update page and choose Uninstall updates.
- Select the newest update that likely caused the emoji panel change.
- Click Uninstall and reboot.
- Test Win + . again.
If you can’t uninstall (for example, updates are too old), use the rollback methods below.
Method 2: Roll back via System Restore or Recovery (when uninstall isn’t enough)
If uninstall isn’t available or the change persists, rollback mechanisms can help.
- Type Create a restore point in the Start menu and open it.
- Go to the System Protection tab.
- Click System Restore.
- Select a restore point created before the emoji panel change.
- Complete the restore and reboot.
If System Restore doesn’t work (or you no longer have a suitable restore point), Windows Recovery options may be available depending on your install method and time since the change.

Once you revert, Windows may try to bring the updated components back. To stop that, pause or use update controls.

- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Pause updates (if available) and choose the longest offered period.
- If you need finer control, consider using Microsoft’s update management tooling (commonly used for blocking specific KB updates).
- Re-check View update history after a while to confirm the blocking/pausing is effective.
Keep in mind that pausing updates also pauses security fixes. Use a schedule you can maintain.

Emoji panel opens but looks wrong
If it opens but the UI doesn’t match what you expect, your system might be partially updated or affected by input/language components.
- Update again via Windows Update and reboot.
- Confirm you tested in a plain text editor (Notepad) to rule out app-specific rendering differences.
- If you recently changed language packs or keyboard layouts, revisit the language Options and install any available component updates.
Win + . does nothing
When the shortcut fails, the issue is usually hotkeys, input focus, or a disabled text/input component.

- Check whether another app is capturing the Win key or the period/semicolon key.
- Test with a different keyboard layout (Settings > Time & Language > Language) if you use multiple layouts.
Emoji search doesn’t work
Search inside the emoji panel can be sensitive to version and updates.

- Install the latest cumulative update.
- Reboot after updates.
- If it broke after a specific KB uninstall, consider rolling forward with the newest update again rather than staying on a half-state.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a single toggle. Windows 10 typically ties emoji panel changes to OS build and updates, not a universal settings checkbox.
- Uninstalling the wrong update. Always check View update history and target the newest KB that matches when the change started.
- Not testing after each change. Test Win + . after Windows update, after reboot, and after any rollback.
- Forgetting to stop updates after rollback. If you revert and then leave updates running, the new emoji panel can reappear.

Can I permanently turn off the emoji panel in Windows 10?

Why did the emoji panel change even though I didn’t touch settings?
