There are so many laptops brands in the market, but if you’ve decided to get the one from Microsoft and are looking for the best one, then you are at the right place. Doesn’t matter if you need a 2 in 1 laptop or a full-fledged machine, Microsoft has it all.

Microsoft’s full size touchscreen devices have been a resounding success. Named Microsoft Surface, it is the software giant’s first and only foray into hardware. For those who don’t know, Microsoft also is among the first companies to introduce the convertible laptops (2 in 1 laptops)

However, in its 7th generation now, the hardware is presented in several variants – Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Book, and Surface Go. It covers all types of sizes and form factors, and it is hard to decide which is the one you really need. They are all premium and built to last, but which is perfectly suitable?

1. Best Overall: Microsoft Surface Book 2

Whether you need to run music production softwares like Ableton or resource intensive AutoCAD software such as REVIT, or 3D Animation tools like Blender, Cinema 4D, this Microsoft Surface book can handle it all!

The body of the Microsoft Surface Book 2 is made of machined magnesium. The feel of the body is very matte and luxurious. There is an added “fulcrum hinge” that allows the screen in the laptop to be pushed back to about 115 degrees.

The laptop has a few ports such as 1 USB-C port, 2 USB 3.1, one full-size SD slot and a magnetic detach charging point similar to the Apple MacBook. There is also a headphone jack as well as a power and volume shortcut key on the screen/tablet portion.

The 15-inch display comes with a screen resolution of 3260 x 2160 pixels and has fabulous viewing angles, contrast ratio, brightness, color, and black levels thereby making it an ultimate machine for watching movies, TV shows.

The keyboard base of the Surface Book 2 has batteries and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 video card. This type of feature is found in mid-range gaming laptops like the Acer Predator series. The laptop comes with detachable tablet portion and the detachment process is relatively simple.

  • Stylish design
  • Suitable for a variety of tasks
  • High-end image editing
  • Stops recognizing its main graphic card
  • Has battery issues

2. Best for Versatility: New Microsoft Surface Pro 7

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7 is not as powerful as the Surface Book 2 because it doesn’t have a high-end GPU. But, If you need a laptop for writing articles, or for engineering college, nursing schools, business meetings, law school, then this should be a great choice!

  • CPU: Intel Core i5
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 256 GB SSD
  • Display: 12.3″ Touch-Screen
  • GPU: Not specified
  • Camera: 8 MP rear-facing (1080p)

Microsoft brings you a versatile and light-weight Surface Pro 7 laptop with better features than its previous surface series. Its SSD storage ensures smooth and quick work at home and office. The touch screen adjusts to light and responds perfectly to the surface pen. Its versatility includes its adjustable body.

With 16GB RAM, it enhances graphics and ensures multi-tasking across tabs and 365 apps.

The best feature, so far, has been the kickstand. Lots of products have tried to mimic it. It has an entirely adjustable hinge. This helps you recline it to almost flat and use it as a tablet, or keep it at 165 degrees and make it a sketch board. The previous models did not have this ‘free-range’ stand.

It definitely shows more power considering its size. At 770 grams, it is only 11.5 * 7.9 * 0.33 inches. The touchscreen display has 267 pixels per inch, it responds sharply to even light touch. The only problem is that the bezels are quite thick for a display of this size.

The keyboard has a nice feel to it and the keys feel bouncy to touch. The backlight and detachability make it serviceable, though not sturdy. This keyboard, as with surface series, can be adjusted at an angle for ease of typing.

Its USB-C and USB-A help with multi-connectivity at the same time. The USB-C is an improvement, but it is not complemented with Thunderbolt 3. The microphones are also stronger, particularly while using Cortana. Unfortunately, the kickstand is unstable on your lap and cannot give the machine the right ‘laptop’ feel.

  • Adjustable kickstand and body
  • Versatile features
  • Comfortable keyboard
  • Strong microphones
  • No thunderbolt 3
  • Pricey considering the features offered
  • Bezels make the display smaller

  • Display: 13.5″ LCD

The keyboard of the 1st Gen Surface laptop is one of the best features of this laptop as it has a unique Alcantara fabric on the keyboard deck that adds softness to the keys.

The left side of the Surface laptop has a USB 3.0 port, Mini DisplayPort and a headphone jack. The right side has the proprietary Surface power port. One downside reported by buyers has been the absence of any Type-C port or a MicroSD port, which would have been convenient for faster work.

The 13.5 inches display is an excellent feature on the laptop as it is colorful, bright and clear. The 3:2 aspect ratio is refreshing and is best for reading documents or websites. The speakers are powerful and are positioned underneath the keyboard, which is unusual as well as innovative.

  • Solid build quality
  • Long battery life
  • Great color options
  • Bit pricey
  • Small selection in ports

  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 128 GB
  • Display: 10″ PixelSense
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 620
  • Camera: 8 MP rear-facing (1080p)

Microsoft Surface Go looks almost like a Surface Pro with some changes. The rounded, soft edges give it a class. The hinge can bend to 180 degrees. There will be a tighter typing experience as the keys are placed closer together.

The display is quite color accurate. Surrounded by thick bezels, it is easy to handle as a tablet and avoids accidental triggers on the screen. The bezels hide the speakers inside. The speakers are tiny drivers on both sides of the screen. The speakers giving nuanced and powerful sound makes it a multi-productivity device.

The Intel Pentium Gold processor can handle projects, websites and media players altogether. The HD Graphics 615 can produce a dream-like effect on 3D images, very well suited for educational apps. The battery life is quite promising, which can last 6 hours on a charge and more on battery saving mode.

  • Well-designed and portable
  • Display is excellent
  • Windows has flexible options
  • Impressive speakers
  • Screen not as sharp as iPad
  • Desktop mode is slightly cramped
  • Not very powerful

5. Best Lightweight Laptop: Microsoft Surface Laptop 3

  • CPU: 1.2 GHz Intel Core i5
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • Storage: 256 GB SSD
  • Display: 13.5″ Touch-Screen
  • GPU: Integrated (1GB)
  • Camera: Not specified

Working on it gives a premium feel as the keyboard works very smooth.

The 13.5-inch Touchscreen with pen and 1280 x 800 pixels display is also good for programmers and mid-level video editing. Its fast processor and rendering speed help you work while you are on the go.

It’s a full-day battery supply and fast charging is another advantage. You can charge this laptop up to 80% in just one hour. Also, it gets charged with a non-invasive plug apparently among the first in designs.

The 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD memory is enough to keep your daily applications and streaming running, however, you may miss watching movies as it has no DVD slot.

The downside is that it comes with Microsoft software like their web surfing program, which is lousy.

Majority of the models that we’ve listed are lightweight, thus, you can carry it around all day and, when at your desk, use a Surface Dock to connect external monitors, mouse, and keyboard to convert it into a desktop instantly.

The runner up in our tests was Surface Go. It was the feather-light weight that stood out. We had never seen an almost full-sized computer that weighed as much as two cell phones. With its USB-C port and fast charge ability, it was the clear winner.
